Corsets / Seam Allowances on Corset Patterns
« on: May 11, 2022, 17:05:32 PM »
I'm starting to make the Victoria Corset from Sew Curvy.
The pattern is given without seam allowances to allow for accurate stitching.
I need to add seam allowances to the lengthwise seams (obviously) but I was wondering if I need to the same for the top and bottom edges that will be bound with bias binding?  I brought a kit that came with pre-cut boning so I'm hoping I won't need to do any cutting of boning for this corset...

Any thoughts or ways of working this out before I make the mock-up?

Hi, I'm new... / Hi, New Here!

Hi, I'm Stephanelli!

I'm new around here but not too sewing.  I've been sewing on and off for around 8 or so years now.  I enjoy dressmaking, patchwork and quilting.  I particularly enjoy projects with a historic hint to them (although I'm not a serious historian, I will quite happily use modern fabrics and techniques) - I particularly enjoy Butterick's Making History patterns.
I'm also interested in corsetry and have finally decided to try and make a corset, I recently purchased a kit from Sew Curvy and can't wait to get started on it when it arrives!

Aside from sewing, I love most textile crafts including knitting, crochet, weaving, spinning and embroidery.  I've recently brought an embroidery/sewing machine and am looking forward to starting a proper project on it (rather than just testing things!)

I have 3 machines I'm using nowadays - a Silver CH03 sewing/embroidery combo machine, a Singer 15K from the 30s or 40s which I converted into a handcrank machine (but I have the motor still should I want to turn it back to motorised) and a Janome 8002D Overlocker.
Prior to getting the Silver I have spent most of my sewing time using a Singer Simple 3223 but when I'd tested the Silver out for what it could do, I decided that I didn't need two modern sewing machines so have recently sold the Singer 3223.

It's lovely to meet you all and I look forward to seeing you round the forum!
