Patterns Discussion / Re: 1940s style
« on: September 23, 2018, 20:22:12 PM »
When I was young, Womens Weekly still had a small column on repurposing/refurbishing garments. Can't quite remember any examples at the moment, but I'm sure someone else will.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Help me identify this

Thanks Wrenkins, but I think it was a one off purchase.  (So glad you've never had to do that yourself!)
Not Aida, Acorn, it is a papery sort of thing, like some interfacing but full of little holes like aertex.  Could it be embroidery backing of some sort, I wonder.

Fun with Fabric / Help me identify this
« on: September 23, 2018, 17:18:05 PM »
Some years ago I bought a metre of - 'something' from Minerva crafts.  I found it, still in the posting bag but without an invoice, underneath my embroidery bits and pieces. It is 90cm wide, doesn't seem to have any glue on the back and it is quite stiff. It looks rather like Aertex fabric.  Can anyone tell me what it is and why I bought it?
And while you are here, what can be done with several metres of white Aertex type fabric, apart from sports shirts?
Many things coming to light recently, I can see I am going to be listing in the 'for sale' section soon.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: Do I need an overlocker?

Overlocker definitely easier than that TV  remote.  There's more logic to it.

The Haberdashery / Re: Buttons
« on: September 20, 2018, 21:41:50 PM »
Well, I've actually used some.  I have sets of shirt buttons from discarded shirts and they were useful.  Also, small numbers of fancy ones for blouses and the skirt I wore today has two buttons on the flaps of the false pockets.  My dress tonight has three gold edged pearl ones that I inherited via my MILs button box. A few gone on small people's clothing. (And they like to sort buttons too).  Button eyes on sock puppets and the centres of fabric flowers.
Finally, where else would I put the spare buttons I get when I buy clothing?

@Tamnymore & @Ellabella I'm going to have to look into the Harrogate one. Any idea what the parking situation is like?
I think  it is slightly out of town and has its own car park.  Google the conference centre  or whatever they call it.

Fun with Fabric / Re: paraffin smell on fabric

This much fabric? It would be a whole shelf of the freezer - and probably make all my food taste of paraffin. This is powerful stuff! I'm afraid it is going,

Thank you, O wise ones.  Decided to follow both your suggestions.  May be some wool in there but a lot of something else.   Who want a jacket that is bio-degrading?  I don't love it that much, in fact I nearly offered it on here, but so glad I didn't!

Fun with Fabric / paraffin smell on fabric
« on: September 02, 2018, 17:36:10 PM »
Bought some coating online, it is supposed to be wool, but it felt dusty so I gave it a gentle wash.  The dustiness has gone but  there is a lingering smell of paraffin even after two washes and some fabric conditioner.  Any suggestions?  If I can't shift it, there is obviously no point in wasting time making it up.  It has been 'airing' in my sewing room for a few months and the smell seems to be increasing rather than diminishing.

Sewing Professionally / Re: Shortening Sleeves on Men's Shirts
« on: August 02, 2018, 17:31:52 PM »
Another problem with shortening from the top is that they don't always do a felled seam by  stitching. Some I have been given are glued and then top stitched. I would not have attempted it if the person had not also wanted the shoulder seam shortening, which means recutting the armscye - and there is not enough height  where you want it redrawn.  Yes, he was a very unusual shape so could not buy a smaller shirt.  Absolute nightmare, don't go there.. It would have been easier to make a shirt to measure, but I was careful not to say that in case I was asked to do it.  >:)
Normally, I'd go for the cuff end every time. Something very satisfying about setting in that little placket -how sad it that?

Shirt sleeves taper towards the cuff.  If you take out the sleeve and cut parallel to the sleeve head, the new cut will be shorter
Question - do you ever get anything unwashed to alter?.
A nursing home once asked me to shorten some curtains from the breakfast room. Although they had been to the dry cleaners, the bottom was encrusted with Weetabix.

Sewing Machines / Re: Horrible topstitching - Mayday

Most of the hem is 3 layers, at the seams it is 6.  The real problem was the material, I think.

I couldn't get the Pfaff to go through with the hand wheel and decided I couldn't wait for the needles to  be delivered, so dug out the lovely old Bernina and the special jeans foot I bought for it. The Bernina galloped through with the 16 needle. (And I'd forgotten how lovely and quiet it is)
I can really recommend that foot, it doesn't baulk at the thick seams on the hems.   :loveit:
