Patterns Discussion / Re: That Green Zara Dress

So, I finished.  I tore the entire dress apart  and replaced the lining with a cotton lawn.  Oh well, it is much better now.  Of course I ran out of thread just at the end.

Regardless of the mishaps, I am pleased with the dress and plan to wear it next week on one of my jaunts into the office.

Forgetting to top up my supply of white thread.  Why do I always run out of white and black thread but more importantly why am I always surprised when I run out.     Clearly, I have some planning issues.

@rachel. I used the term self lining exaclty as you thought - used the fashion fabric as the lining.  For me it was a mistake because the fabric is rather thick which created a turn of the cloth issue which I always forget about.  It is also making the bodice rather hot - ugh.

Using the fashion fabric as a lining is not always a problem so don't be discouraged from using it.   :D  Just think carefully about how it will effect the final garment.

Wow that is beautiful!  :loveit:  And the Egyptian decals are very sought after by collectors.  What an amazing find!

@UttaRetch  - LOL view C that is definitely not a coat by my standards.   Good question about the aubergine - I have no idea if it is an on trend color as I tend to not keep up with the Pantone color thing which seems to me just an attempt to get everyone to dress alike.

@BrendaP  - That is both sad and funny.  Definitely someone missed that pressing mistake.  In sewing class we had a term for a dart that looked like that but best not to use in polite company.  I find that dress to much like a waitress uniform for me.

I was underwhelmed by this McCalls release AND the last very ruffly one.

I really thought pattern 8156 was a dress when I first glanced at it.   Not sure of it as a coat.

Still waiting for the Butterick fall release with fingers crossed for something enticing.

@rachel  - thanks for the idea.

I have been dealing with a tension problems on my  :sew: machine when I got this far: .  But the machine is fixed and I am almost done.  I did a self lining which I now regret - should have use some lawn but ...oh well.

I decided to just drape the skirt which was probably faster than faffing about with a pattern.  Hope to finish it this weekend if we dont go off to help with a grape harvest.

Save some of that :gin:  for me.

@UttaRetch Thank you!! You are a star and  you have the most amazing pattern-fu I have ever seen.

I have a bunch of Maggy London patterns hidden away in a box.  Time to do a sort through

I had thought of taking it home but with lockdown it never happened.

I am in the US but a pattern is a pattern - I am sure I can find any pattern as long as I don't mind paying for shipping.

Patterns Discussion / Re: Butterick 6729 - Issues with the Pattern
« on: August 02, 2020, 19:42:50 PM »
Another issue with this pattern is it is short.  Really short.

Being 5'1", I usually shorten everything,  This skirt with no modifications is well above my knees.  I can only wonder how short this would be on someone normal height.

Right now this dress is in the naughty corner.  My fabric choice was ill advised as I look like a big beige blob and the fabric is not laying well in the midriff area - think puffy.  Now that last issue is solely user error.  I have ripped the midriff band out and need to find some interfacing that will work on the fabric.

Back to the drawing board with this one.

In February, just before everything hit the skids, I popped into Zara one lunch and saw this dress and fell in love with it.
I recalled that I have a apple green linen at home so I should just make the dress.  I did a quick examination of the dress but that was it.  Time flies and I still want to make a copy of this dress before summer is over.

I need help finding a pattern to modify.  The only pattern I have found so far is McCalls 8034 which kinda gives me the bodice.

I know there are a number of you who can find suitable patterns easily.  Is there something better than McCalls 8034 out there?

Walk a pattern sometime from any of the big 4.  It's scary how bad they actually are.  Last one I used, the notches didn't line up, the dart didn't hit the bust point (I had to raise them for a size 18 something like half an inch, and my girls aren't as perky as they used to be), the front and back were off 1/8" or so...all things that have to be corrected before you can sew.

Agreed.  Walking a recent pattern from the big 4 can be enlightening or scary - one of the two not sure which.  My experience is that it is unusual to find notches that match.  There have been cases where there is a notch on a pattern piece that does not match anything.

I am just lucky that I am not learning to sew now with these types of errors.  Knowing me, I would be sure that the errors were solely mine rather than that of the pattern company.

@Ohsewsimple  - how very annoying.  You did the smart thing - fold up that pattern and put it away.

@Ohsewsimple I agree that it happens more frequently than previously.    Though if you do not have drafting skills a person might think it was user error or choosing the wrong size.

@UttaRetch I do not think the pattern companies are going back to knowledge assumed because most of my vintage patterns have different bodices or cutting lines for a sleeveless bodice.  I think it is a cost cutting measure.  Less to print = cheaper printing = more profits.

@Ploshkin  Oh no.  I too have run across those sleeve heads frequently.  It is very frustrating.

Just a quick public service announcement should any one be interested in making up Butterick 6729 as the sleeveless dress.

The pattern is drafted for sleeves.  There is neither a different bodice pattern piece nor cutting line for the sleeveless verstion.   I made a mockup of this pattern for a sleeveless dress and  wow are the armholes too big and low for the sleeveless version.   ><  I had to piece in about an inch on both the back and front pattern pieces.  Fortunately, I had just traced off and mocked up a 60s Vogue which provided a sleeved and sleeveless version with perfect sleeveless armholes when made.

So word of caution - definitely do a mock up or use the armhole off of a TNT sleeveless pattern.

Or if you like, this link shows the offending dress on the Vogue site.  It is definitely Vogue's sample.       :scream:
