My kids saw the cover of that... ‘she’s got a sewing machine! Is it a film about sewing? She must be stronger than daddy!’ They were suitably impressed!

Saw this at the cinema last year.  It's a load of hokum but very enjoyable.

The clothes she makes are fabulous plus one of the Hemsworth brothers is the eye candy (can't remember which one, but it doesn't really matter).

This is almost a sort-of spoiler post....

I was gifted the dvd by a friend some time back and the dresses made by Kate Winslet's character are indeed utterly scrumptious.
But although the film trots along in a rather light-hearted, almost comedic, mode at first, don't be lulled into a false sense of security as I was, because there are a couple of sudden, emotionally harrowing events which took me completely by surprise and shocked me, and which completely change the whole tone of the film. I've only watched the film once for that reason, even though I loved the dresses and the sewing, because I am a wuss.
So peeps be warned!

Thank you for that Mme C - that's the sort of thing I like to know in advance, although Mr Acorn really doesn't.  (I read all the Coronation Street spoilers, but if I told him about them I think divorce might be on the cards!)

Was wondering about watching it.  I'm another who likes to know what his coming so that I can avoid it if possible.  Makes for a lot of programmes going unwatched.

I had a quick look at the plot and reviews. Still thinking, but I might not bother.

It's an OK film, with enough froth to counter the dark moments.  If you can't cope with any 'reality' Disney is the way forward lol

Now you have my interest. 0_0  Both are equally beautiful.

You're welcome! I also always prefer to know which character dies in a film too, because then I can prepare myself  :S
It's not that I cannot deal with reality, it's rather that in some ways IRL I've had to perhaps deal with too much, and sometimes a sudden, unexpected shock within a film, if it mirrors events in my life too closely, and if I am relaxed and settled and looking forward to what I have been led to believe is a feelgood movie, can be triggering. I have had post traumatic stress symptoms in my past, and it took me long time to fully regain my health, so I prefer to be on my guard  :)
I accept that I am at the far end of the distribution curve here, and I am over cautious, and I appreciate that everyone is different. But The Dressmaker really upset me when I watched it, and I just wanted to make others aware that it is not a feelgood film with frocks :)

Apparently, Kate Winslet actually learnt how to sew on the machine, so the film has some credibility. 0_0  I won't bother with this, but intend to see Phantom thread (https://youtu.be/UuXGDFw8qDQ).

We are all really weird.  I can stand any amount of death in films, tv etc., but if it is an animal or young child I've got red eyes.  Same as if somebody gets drowned trying to save a dog, I'm scanning the page to find out what happened to the dog, with absolutely no interest in the drowned owner.

I wont watch War Horse, have no idea what will be in it but don't want to chance it.

Don't think I want to watch this one - sewing notwithstanding - but I also want to see Phantom Thread.

We recorded The Dressmaker but our Sky box won't let us watch it without entering a PIN that we haven't set.   -<

It usually starts with a default setting of 1234, try that

I read the book and found the ending not very satisfying!

We tried both of those, and the PIN we always use for non-financial things (just in case we had set it and forgotten) and then got locked out.

We can reset it, but I have to dig out our account number, and so far I've been too lazy...  :[
