I've recently made a start on another Shiny Happy applique quilt. I intend to actually finish this one...properly finish it.  :thumb:

Pics will follow one day.

Alterations Advice Please / Re: Help needed regarding taking clothes in
« on: August 31, 2023, 08:27:40 AM »
Good morning @Hayley  :) Welcome to the forum.
Clothing alterations is my 'thing'.

Tops...Generally speaking I take them in through the side seams. Depending on the style...(like a shirt/blouse)... and how much needs coming in I might pinch a couple of darts in the back to give a bit more shape.
I've never worked with a pattern to take something in.

Jeans...I suppose you could take them in down the outside leg seams but then you will have a problem with the front pockets. You will be making the pocket openings smaller so you probably won't be able to use them. The waistband in this case would be seamed at the sides to take that in.
Usually when I take jeans or trousers in I will take the amount in down the centre back seam, but two sizes smaller might be too much to pull in at the centre back. The back pockets will be pulled too close to the back seam and look a bit odd. (Although I've done that many times on the insistence of the customer.  :S )

It all depends...how much needs to be taken in, the style of the garment...I decide what's going to work best when I do a fitting.

You have sewing machines which you have never used? Have a play around on the machines before you do anything. The jeans are going to be tough to stitch through the layers so you'll need a heavier weight needle to go through it all without the needle breaking.
If you have t-shirt, stretchy knit fabrics in your tops, then a ballpoint needle is needed for those.

There's lots of help online nowadays with videos, forums, etc. The GB sewing bee might show some methods of doing things but you'd have to trawl through a lot to get what you were after.

Don't know if I've helped at all but don't be scared to ask.
We're a friendly lot on here, and good for you  :thumb: for not just throwing your clothes away and buying new.
Pretty much anything can be altered smaller and many things can be made larger too.

I enjoyed watching that. Thank you @Pearl

Feel a bit sad that I haven't been (again).
Part of me feels too idle to be bothered to go and the other part knows that if I go I'll buy even more stuff that I don't need which will just get stashed away with everything else.

Does Millicent feel better now?

I haven't put the piece back on yet but I'm sure she'll feel much better when she can stand taller again.  0_0

Dress Forms / Spare Parts from Adjustoform
« on: June 27, 2023, 18:37:08 PM »
I want to let anyone know who needs replacement parts that I've just received excellent service from Adjustoform.  :thumb:

I've had Millicent, (Lady Valet model) for a few years now, and the screw snapped off in the black ring bit so I couldn't adjust her height any more.  :(

Sent an email to the company. Quick response from a lovely and friendly lady. Sent her a picture of the broken bit because I hadn't a clue what it was called, and she has sent me a free replacement which has arrived today.
I now know that the part I was after is called a locking collar  8)

Great service. They deserve a bit of praise.

Oh. And the envelope was addressed to Millicent.

No. Sorry.

I don't have much white on white but I had a look just in case.

I'll unsubscribe eventually.

Thank you @Mr Twingo for keeping the site up and running. I feel a bit lost without it.

I've just had a very quick look at what's available.

There's a lot more choice than I expected. Some nicer stuff which I'll probably save just in case I get the urge.  :thumb:
I need to have a better look when I've got more time.

I'm nosey curious enough to sign up to see what's going to be on offer.  :thumb:
I have nothing to lose if I don't like it or it's not to my taste.

Thank you @sewmuchmore  :)

The Haberdashery / Re: Can I wash a spool of polyester thread?
« on: April 20, 2023, 16:15:03 PM »
I'd wash it. I'd get it in the sink in warm soapy water, and then rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.
Nothing to lose. It might take a while to dry right to the centre of the reel but I'm sure it'll dry eventually.  :thumb:

Alterations Advice Please / Re: Sleeves on suede jacket alteration
« on: April 17, 2023, 09:17:32 AM »
You just need to be a bit more careful because you can't really unpick too many times because you'll leave lots of permanent holes in the suede.

You can get machine needles for sewing leather/suede which have a different tip. Seams and hems are usually glued because you obviously can't iron the seams or hems into place. We always used Evo stik because when it dries it's still pliable and it's thick enough that it won't soak into the suede. Thinly applied! You won't need to load it on and check it doesn't soak through. This part can be fiddly to do. Jacket inside out to glue, then fold up to new length and try to turn the sleeve the right way round without getting it all over the place and quickly getting the fold at the new length before it dries too much.
You mainly need to get the glue in the new length fold because you need to leave the cut edge free to reattach the lining.

Then I use a wallpaper seam roller to press the hem fold more sharply.  :thumb:

  Good luck @Bumblebuncher  :thumb:

I'm here this afternoon. I've got all my work stuff done and now I've started to go through my Mum's old stuff.
There are some items on my work rail which need looking at. I'm currently restitching the hem on a dress. There's a couple of items which have tiny holes which I'll either catch by hand or darn on the machine. I'm trying to make them as tidy as possible before either charity shopping them - if they're good - or dropping them in the recycle bin at the corner shop if they're not quite good enough.
