Title: Pens for tracing/marking patterns - and 'sticky' tape
Post by: Sewingsue on March 15, 2021, 11:10:38 AM
Could I ask those of you who trace out your patterns which pens you would recommend?
I am using Swedish Tracing Paper if that makes any difference.

Also recommendations for tape please.

Wash away double sided tape?  This (https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B075897BP4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) is what I got last time, it's fine.

Thanks, but I meant tape for taping tissue/tracing paper together when you alter the pattern.

Oops!  I don't do tracing patterns.

I use cheap micropore tape from the First Aid section of the likes of Home Bargains or BM Bargains. It is easy to tear off the roll and can be written on with biro or pencil.

Nothing fancy here, I use a pencil for drawing the lines and ordinary sellotape (other brands of clear sticky tape are available  ;) ) for joining bits of paper together, for instance when doing FBAs. For paper I use rolls of paper tablecovering. I bought a pack of two jumbo rolls about 7 years ago and they will see me out!

I use Burda tracing paper and a glue stick.

I usually use Magic Tape.

I’ve also bought some of this to try.   Now where the heck did I put it?

I use magic tape as well, it can sometimes be removed without tearing printer paper. The removable one is brilliant too but I don't find it sticks well permanently, good for alterations though.

Thanks. Magic Tape. That's the name I was trying to remember.

@Helen M: I also use the 3M magic tape and it even works with tissue paper and will left off without tearing if you are very, very careful.

I use the tape that Fit for Real People suggest, it is Scotch Magic Tape but it is only 12mm wide as opposed to the normal Magic Tape that is 19mm wide, and believe me it does make a huge difference.  However I found I had to order this tape from an office shop and it came on big reels, so I had to buy a proper large dispenser for this.

Whatever you do don't get into the habit of writing the pattern info with a Frixxion pen because they're always at hand. Guess what happens if you need to iron the creased up tracing afterwards?

I still use my much favoured Venus drawing pencils in a soft B grade. No longer made sadly but we got a few boxes in the 70s for tracing patterns and hopefully enough to see me out. I use my much loved 2-stage pencil sharpener (https://www.cultpens.com/i/q/KM08490/kum-automatic-long-point-sharpener-with-lead-pointer-as2m?gclid=Cj0KCQjwi7yCBhDJARIsAMWFScMqC1cVi3uXPODa4LxDZvMZfhXHM5lAGLjmes3MgwLsDktmuRlY1x8aAt2AEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds) for long lovely points.

As for the tape, yes Magic Tape for me but it bothers me even using the narrower width so I've got into the habit of cutting lengths in half lengthwise. It minimises the incidence of pushing pins through it and it's so much easier to pull off without too much damage if you make a mistake. A bit of smug comfort for my economic tendencies too - I do have some, albeit admittedly not entirely consistent in some things.

This innocent little sewing forum can be so revealing, can't it?

@Marniesews its also not a good idea to use Frisian pens on a toile!
Forgot that’s what I had when I marked one, sewed it up, pressed the seams etc........

I use an ordinary ballpoint with Swedish tracing paper.  I do have pencils ... somewhere and have lost the sharpener, too.

Oh I know that feeling.
I started to sort out my supplies, tools etc and now either can't find anything or keep finding duplicates (just occasionally triplicates  :|).

With years of architectural type drafting, I have quite a collection of pencils, triangles, tools, etc.

I probably own 20-30 (50?) pencil sharpeners. And I can tell you where 1 is at the moment. I think I even remember buying an electric one at some point.

I prefer a .7mm mechanical pencil, at least the quality of a Pentel, for pattern drafting. .5mm is too thin for the paper I use. I prefer 2H lead. I use $1/roll brown postal/craft paper from the dollar store as recommended by Rory Duffy (Irish Savile Row trained tailor) when he was teaching/working in NYC. I've paid 4x as much for similar paper and always get lesser quality when I do.

I also bought a $1 pack of 12 fine tip children's markers that I use once I'm happy with the pencil draft and also to label pieces and make notes. The color is holding up fine and doesn't do anything funky if I need to press a piece flat.

I use 3M Magic Scotch tape to tape things together permanently as it doesn't discolor and go gunky over time.

By pure luck, I happened upon a roll of green "Frog Tape" made for house painting, and it seems virtually identical to drafting tape I purchased decades ago. I use it to tape paper to my cardboard cutting board and to tape the pattern paper onto the brown paper and it all peels apart easily without damaging any of the paper. The pieces can even be reused.

A Click eraser is also handy to have.

I don't actually trace patterns, I transfer them into the brown paper with pinholes, or the super pointy tracing wheel. Most of the drafting is from scratch.

And of coarse, dedicated paper cutting scissors.

I think the marker which I use most, is the humble pencil...

I do use chalk and heat erasable pens too, but the pencil is what I usually use.

Having started this thread - and many thanks to all of you for contributing (why did I forget about using a pencil?) I went online this morning and ordered some magic tape.

Then, since it was a major outstanding job, I went back to sorting all those essential bits and pieces we all have which were scattered randomly round my sewing/craft room.

I went to put something on the bottom section of a rolling trolley that had a mix of small DIY stuff in it which could be used for craft or household - including some adhesives etc in the bottom tray.

Did you know that if you get back quickly enough you can cancel an Amazon order?
