The threading was the main reason I was so anti overlockers for so long.  I actually almost never have to rethread the loopers - I tie the new thread on and run it through them - and threading the needles is very straighforward (much more so than any sewing machine I have ever come across).

However, I did have to rethread the loopers the other day and I didn't even need to refer to the manual.  Mine is very definitely not an expensive one!  I suspect they have improved a lot in terms of colour coding and making things clear in the last few years.

It seems to be the standard price for it from the main sellers.  I couldn't find the one you mention @Gernella although there is one being sold for £28.88 + £1.49 delivery - however, it's not a Janome made one, has only one lot of feedback and wouldn't arrive until late August!

I have bitten the bullet and ordered from Frank Knutt - £59, but free delivery, and he had bobbins too.

Thank you all so much.

... and I've just had an email from GUR saying categorically that Janome 1600 accessories will not fit the Megaquilter - and they sold me a 1/4 inch foot for it a couple of months ago, which works perfectly!

Sewing Machine Sales, however, have a walking foot on their website that is listed as fitting the Janome 1600P, the Megaquilter, and the Pfaff Grand Quilter.  It looks as though they and Frank Knutt are the ones who know what they're talking about!

I had a nice second reply from Sew Essential, saying that in that case the machine will be a category C.

Now whenever I've seen the listings of machine categories the straight stitchers seem to be in a category by themselves.  However, if it is a Cat C there are lots of other things available... does anybody know?

Urgh @Celia - I need some more bobbins.  I will beware!

I've just found a listing for a walking foot that says it will fit:

Viking Mega Quilter

Juki TL98E TL98Q Quilter

Brother Quilter PQ1300 PQ1500

New Home 1600P-DB

Pfaff Grand Quilter

... which I guess means any feet fitting one of these machines will fit all the others...?

(It's a US site - I'm assuming that New Home = Janome, and I know that Viking = Husqvarna)

Thank you @Celia!  I am very surprised as Sew Essential.

@Efemera I think there is also a Juki and a Brother that are identical machines.  I will look into it - thank you.

It's a high shank, but it seems to be relevant that it's a straight stitch only machine, and also high speed.

Aaagh!   :headbang:

I want to get a walking foot for my Megaquilter.  I found what I think is the correct foot on the Sew Essential website, labelled as being for the Janome 1600P QC.  I contacted them to check before ordering it, and they replied that you cannot put a Janome foot on a Husqvarna machine because feet are never interchangeable between brands, that Viking has confirmed this, and that feet are no longer made for the Megaquilter.

Well, my 1/4 in foot is branded Janome, and, as I understand it, the Janome1600P QC and the Husqvarna Megaquilter (and the Pfaff Grand Quilter) are identical machines, made in the same factory at the same time with only a few cosmetic differences.

Can someone just back me up on this while I go looking elsewhere for a Janome 1600P QC walking foot?

You can't, I'm afraid - no attachments with PMs.  You can either copy and paste the contents or use a file sharing app and send the link.

I have a coverstitcher.  I don't use it a lot, and mainly bought it because my other machines tunnel terribly when I try doing a twin needle hem.  I'm glad to have it, but wouldn't call it necessary by any means, and if your normal machine behaves with a twin needle there's very little need for one.

Mind you, I'm sure it does lots of exciting things that I haven't discovered yet - I seem to remember someone (Efemera?) doing some beautiful binding with theirs.

This is not unlike it.  The straps could be made wider, but it does have a waist seam, and elastic across the back, which may not be what you want.

There are boxes alongside the instructions with links to the free designs, although I had to copy and paste them rather than clicking on them and then one had an error in the url (a . where there should have been a / ).  One was an £8 design that became free, though.

The first few things I sewed in knit fabric I sewed in exactly the same way as I would have done if they were woven, because I didn't know that I shouldn't.  They were absolutely fine.  I'm still wearing most of them, and nothing bad has happened.  That doesn't mean that it wouldn't be better to do it the right way, of course!

I do have an overlocker now, despite having been the lead singer of the TSP 'We Hate Overlockers' Choir for several years.  I love it, and I frequently use it on wovens as well.

Block of the Month 2020 / Re: February's BOM

That looks great.  That's exactly what I'm planning to do on my seabirds quilt, which has plain dark blue sashing.  Did you use a template?

Well done!  They look really lovely.  Here's hoping for lots of lovely staycationers this summer, just longing to spend their money on authentic, artisan-produced, Dorset crafts.   :D
