Title: Singer Touch & Sew 720
Post by: So Chic on October 21, 2020, 13:08:21 PM
I inherited my MIL's machine and it's been in our loft for about ten years if not more.  I've had a look at it and it's in very poor condition, it works but sounds awful.  What I'm wondering is should I have it serviced and try to sell it, donate it to a local charity which repairs equipment and then sends it to third world countries, or just chuck it out.  I would be grateful for any advice on this.

I've come across these a couple of times, but both times some of the internal plastic cams and parts were cracked or disintegrating, and the machine could not be saved. Folks talk about having cogs 3-D printed and so forth, but I'm not sure it's really worth it (personal opinion there).

Sadly, if it was me, I probably wouldn't waste time on it, but consign it to the metal skip.

Maybe other folks can give some more positive views?

Best wishes
Leila

That was the first brand new sewing machine I ever bought... I loved it, it made lovely buttonholes.
I’d see how much it would cost to service /repair.

I decided to maybe have it serviced so I took it to Barchan, Whitstable as they will look at it for free to see whether it is worth saving.  While we were there my OH said let’s have lunch as we missed out on celebrating our wedding anniversary because he was ill.  It was great to sit in a restaurant (socially distanced) and feel almost normal and the meal was excellent.

I've heard from the sewing machine hospital that to put the machine into full working order will cost £110.  I don't know whether to have it done and then try to sell it or to donate it in its present condition to Tools for Africa as they will do any repairs/servicing necessary.

Sorry to hear that, but not really surprised.   :[

I decided not to have it serviced and collected it this morning.  I chatted with the shop owner and he said that they have none of the cheaper machines in stock and have been told that they will probably not have a delivery until January 2021 at the earliest.

If you've still got your 720, I've also got one which needs a new motor. If you want to sell it I would be interested in taking it for the spares.
