The number of my machines has outgrown the number of spaces, and my thoughts of dressmaking came to naught - so a re-think is ongoing.

The following will be for sale:

Singer 99K black and gold hand-crank - lovely condition and (obviously) fully working - photographs will follow  GONE

Bernina 830 Record (this has knee lift) in red plastic case. Photographs will follow  SOLD!  :)

Later there will be an electrified Singer 201K with the cast (heavy) body - but this isn't cleaned yet. SOLD

There may be the lovely Vesta hand-crank sometime, if I can ever get it moving the way it should!  :)

I haven't looked for prices online yet, and as most of you know pick up would be from Somerset unless we could get it moved to where you are - you'd have to ask folks about that  :)

But letting everyone know, so that if someone is keen to have one of these they can let me know before I get organized to posting them on n auction site.

So do shout out with questions or whatever here if you are interested.

Thanks
LeilaMay

A Good Yarn / Re: WINTER SOCK KNIT ALONG. 2022
« on: March 31, 2023, 11:22:09 AM »
Not sure when we are going to start a Spring Sock thread, but my next pair are being knitted in a couple of 4 ply natural yarns, with yarn bought from the farm.

The place is called Fernhill Farm, in Somerset, and we were there a few years ago for a shearing day. I asked about spun yarn, and I came away with 50g of Shetland in pale brown and 50 g of ShetlandxRomney in cream. She didn't have any more at that time, so I got what there was.

Now I've looked them up this morning, and it' a bit more about fibre for spinning yourself - some wonderful fleece choices but I'm not a spinner. They say they have some yarn, but I'm not sure how much is currently in stock.
Do take a look though if you like wool :)

https://fernhillfibre.co.uk/

The socks will be stripes (kind of obvious I suppose) one will start off with a cream top, then have brown stripes added, a brown heel, and stripes to the cream toe - the other one the opposite way round. There will be a photo eventually.

It's passing the time nicely whist I watch the rain, and stare at the stuck sewing machine and wait or WD40 to work it's magic. Fingers crossed!

:)

I'm glad you all liked the picture. To be honest, it is because it was in very good condition, and I worked on it very carefully so as not to damage or lift any of the veneer; it's much easier to do less, rather than go in too strong and find you don't how to fix it.

Now all I need is to be able to get the bloomin' machine to work  :)

The Vesta case is looking good - the machine now has WD40 on it's (non) moving parts!

Both machines are in good shape, but neither have toolbox lids, or any tools or feet. The black one is missing all it's cables and foot pedal, the brown one needs some re-wiring and I'm going to source a different pedal, still brown but easier on my foot  :)
I'll be busy on this for ages LOL

Oh No!!!

The brown, aluminium-bodied machine has failed it's PAT test because the wiring is damaged somewhere, and wrapped in insulating tape.
It will (at this very minute) be standing out the back in the garage area of the shop, ready to be thrown away.
They will cut the plug off and let me have it for a donation ££ tomorrow if I go first thing in the morning.

Am I mad to think of taking it and getting back to working order again, when I already have the black one to work on?? But who could really let a lovely 201K go in the skip?

I'm working on a sewing machine - but just not sewing  :) The case is in [controlled] pieces, the wood is clean, there's a smell or Autosol and Orange oil in the air

Started work on the machine case, so Tuesday was very careful washing of the wood - done a couple of square inches at a time, and dried immediately, to hopefully prevent any damage to the glue holding down the veneer.
Wednesday is some cleaning of the metal case parts - they simply are never going to be shiny again but they're not quite so grungy now - and oiling the wood.

There will be photos at some point when I can load them all from the camera.

Machine itself still stuck solid LOL

I had to cut the plug off a modern footpedal and wire on a "banana" plug (from Helen Howes) for my 185k.  Got the wire wrong on the first attempt, but then worked out that the pins were number 3-2-1 rather than 1-2-3  :S

I have to say I leave the electrics to my lovely OH, who is well experienced.   :)

Thank you all for the encouragement.

I know the motor runs, as I tried it out with the brown lead before that one went back to the charity shop. So the first and most needed requirements is a set of cabling and foot pedal.
We have a modern black foot pedal, and I'll be happy with that, and we can buy yards of black cabling, so the first purchase will be a black plug from Helen Howes, which attaches the cables to the machine. I see she has them on her site, so hopefully that parts will be straightforward.

The base is in good condition, but has no tool box lid. I do have a metal one of the right size, but it's somewhat rusty on the top surface, so that's going to get paint stripper and black Hammerite (which we have so of) once the weather is warmer and dry so it can be done outside.

In the meantime, working on the Vesta :)

We've had "the talk" here, and the deal is if I can get the little Vesta machine working, and pass it along, then I'd have room for this one, which I'd use, whereas the Vesta would just be cute-looking.

Right now though the Vesta is still stuck - need a few warm days in a row so I can spray it with the windows open day and night. But fun in prospect, and I do like being to get machines working again.

If I cn get the Vesta turning over, I'll offer it here first :)

Vintage Machines / Saved from the skip - TWO! Singer 201Ks
« on: March 27, 2023, 16:37:49 PM »
I look at sewing machines for one of my local charity shops - my neighbor is a volunteer there - and make ure they work, suggest prices and so forth

Today there were two Singers, and both turned out to be electric 201s!
There was a brown one, nice condition, still all original brown pedal, cables and so forth, it all moves now I've fettled the bobbin area, so it's in the "special room" for PAT testing.

The other though has no cable or foot pedal. As it can't be PAT tested, and can't be sold as is, it would have gone in the skip :(  So we've made a donation and brought it home to see what we can do. I have a black foot pedal, but no cable or plug to fit the machine motor - but all things are possible with the wonderful Helen Howes!
It has no tool box lid, and no tools to speak of, and would once have had a small extension table too, but I can sort most of those things from here.

I'll let you know how it progresses.
