Your Favourite Suppliers / Calico Laine :)
« on: January 31, 2019, 10:40:10 AM »
I ordered a sample of brushed cotton from an online supplier last week.  I loved it, but when I tried to order some I found it was out of stock.  I had a vague look for it elsewhere, but had no luck.  I emailed to ask if/when it would be back in stock, but didn't get an answer.

On Tuesday I had an email from Calico Laine with a coupon code for 15% off.   I went to see if they had anything to tempt me, and guess what!!  There it was, and cheaper than at the other place, even before applying the code.

I paid for 1st class (but not next day) delivery, and it arrived yesterday - 24 hours after ordering.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Fabric Dies
« on: January 23, 2019, 14:10:56 PM »
I had the Sizzix Big Shot Plus for Christmas, and it in inspiring me to get back into English Paper Piecing (which I can do sitting in front of the TV in the evenings).

However, I am finding that there are not enough dies to satisfy me!!  Ideally I would like to be able to get dies that are the same but roughly 1/2 inch different in size so that I can cut out both the fabric and the papers using the machine, but I've only been able to do this with hexagons.  (Diamonds... I want diamonds!!)

So, other Sizzix users ( @Lowena ) are there other dies that will work with the Big Shot Plus, and if there are, where can I find them?

Your Favourite Suppliers / Fantastic Ribbons
« on: January 23, 2019, 13:58:15 PM »
They are... well... fantastic!

They sent me an email a few days ago offering 76 cards of fabric covered buttons for £20 - usual price £227.

Oh - and I placed the order on the afternoon of Jan 21st and received it today - Jan 23rd.  Postage was free because it was over £20, but I opted to pay an extra 90p to have them sent 1st class.

They are absolutely beautiful.  They look good on the website, but they are even nicer in reality.  I am going through my clothes in my head thinking about which ones would look good with new buttons.  It's just a shame I hate sewing buttons on, but I think I can cope!

This is not an unusual offer from Fantastic Ribbons, and everything I have ever had from them has been beautiful.

PS, the code was fab19, just in case they have any left.

Dolls and Toys / Dolls' clothes - knitted and sewn
« on: January 11, 2019, 12:28:15 PM »
This is Dolly:

She has a 22cm/9in chest, and long thin arms and legs.  She is about 14in tall.  I have just discovered how difficult it is to find dolls' clothes patterns that give anything other than the height.  I just don't know whether a pattern labelled as for a 14 inch doll will be the right width - and I am quite particular about fit!  I have been looking at knitting patterns, but I am interested in sewing as well.

Does anyone have any sources that give enough information, or any nuggets of advice?

Your Favourite Suppliers / Jaycotts
« on: December 15, 2018, 12:41:56 PM »
Well, lots of us know that Jaycotts are wonderful, but I still needed to say it again.

I'm embroidering napkins for Christmas Day, and was running out of a crucial (and fairly uncommon) colour of thread.  I placed an order with Jaycotts at 1.42pm yesterday, and it arrived today - before I actually ran out!

And I didn't ask them to speed the order or tell them it was urgent, or anything like that.  It was just a normal order, with normal postage (free, as I ordered over £25-worth of stuff, but it would only have been £1.50 if I had ordered less).

And, of course, their stock range is fantastic.   0_0

Must get back to embroidering those stars...  :)

Your Favourite Suppliers / Hot Pink Haberdashery
« on: November 22, 2018, 13:24:48 PM »
Has anyone used Hot Pink Haberdashery?

I placed an order with them on November 10th, and received a shopify email on the 12th saying that the order was on its way.  Logging on to my account with them shows the order as still being prepared.  I emailed them 2 days ago to ask what was happening and I haven't had a response.   -<

Embroidery and Embellishment / Changing thread colours... or not.
« on: November 19, 2018, 12:03:43 PM »
I know that there is a setting on my Husqvarna Viking Topaz 25 that stops the machine from stopping for colour changes in an embroidery design - ie it lets you do the whole design in one thread without changing or stopping.

I know that there is a setting, because I enabled it by mistake a few weeks ago.

Now I want it I can't find it...  :\ ... I've searched the menu and the manual as well, with no luck.

Can anybody help me???

Tech Know How / Downtime Today (5th November)
« on: November 05, 2018, 16:47:10 PM »
Just letting you know that the downtime we have suffered from this afternoon is down to our webhosts.  It was not under our control, and we had no warning of it.  The information is here - such as it is.

We have no idea whether there is more to come.

Patterns Discussion / Style Arc Mavis
« on: October 24, 2018, 16:24:05 PM »
Has anybody made the Style Arc Mavis top?

The line drawings show a fairly loose neck, but the reviews on Pattern Review make it look quite narrow.  The only photo on the Style Arc listing doesn't show the neck very well, and it has clearly been made with ribbed jersey anyway, so doesn't really give an indication of how it would be in ordinary knit jersey.

It doesn't matter terribly, because I will happily just give it an ordinary neckband, but I would like to know whether it's worth bothering with the polo in the first place.  I can't bear close fitting polos.

The other thing I wondered about was whether it would work with inserts made of woven fabric rather than jersey.

Your Favourite Suppliers / I need to identify a shop!
« on: September 23, 2018, 20:42:38 PM »
Earlier this year I bought a lovely piece of viscose from an online shop.  I would love to get some more, either the same design or the same fabric in a different design.  Unfortunately I cannot figure out where I bought it.  I have searched my emails but can't find any that refer to orders containing viscose.

It came in a ziplock bag that was long and thin, with the folded fabric at one end and the bag folded around the fabric.  Does that ring any bells with anyone?

It was definitely an online shop with its own website, not an Ebay or Etsy seller.  It was definitely not Minerva, whose bags are not ziplock.

For what it's worth, the fabric is navy blue with a deep pink flower, but there are quite a lot of viscoses that fit that description (and the specific fabric may no longer be available), so that's not really of any help.

Patterns Discussion / Diagonal Dart Problem
« on: August 19, 2018, 21:11:48 PM »
I have just been cutting out the pattern for a Lekala top that has diagonal darts.  This is the technical drawing:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Unfortunately on cutting out the pieces I realised that the top is very short, coming only just below the waist.  I need it to be at least 4 inches longer, preferably a bit more, and normally I would just lengthen it at the appropriate point.  However, because of the diagonal dart I cannot do this.  This is the pattern piece:

Does anyone have any advice?  Should I fold the dart and add length below it, or do you think this would lose the effect of the dart?

Should I just look for another pattern...?   -<

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Extension Table
« on: June 19, 2018, 12:10:05 PM »
If you have been following my By the Sea project thread you may remember that I have three main machines, two of which have extension tables.  The third, is, of course, the one I want to do my quilting on, and I was reluctant to spend £70 - £80 on a third extension table.

Well, Mr Acorn has made me one, entirely from bits and pieces that we already had.  It even slopes perfectly in line with the gentle slope of the machine's free arm (1.8 degrees, so I am told).  It is brilliant.   :D

Here it is:

BTW, I won't be using it in its current position - I will have plenty of table to the left of me when I'm actually quilting!

Sewing Machines / Skipping Stitches
« on: June 13, 2018, 15:15:18 PM »
Sob... my shiny new Toyota Oekaki is disgracing itself by skipping stitches whenever it can.

I have done all the usual things - rethreaded top and bottom, fiddled with tension, changed needle, changed thread.  Changing the thread improved things dramatically because I was previously using a very old reel of rather lovely, but fairly thick, thread.  However, it did not get rid of the skipping completely.  I think it gets worse when it gets faster, but it does skip at lower speeds too.  When I was doing serpentine stitch last week it was consistently skipping the stitches on the right hand curve, and that was using the thread, needle and fabric that were supplied with the machine.

@Francesca - did you have stitch skipping issues with your Oekaki?

Does anyone else have any ideas or suggestions?
