In the wardrobe / Cotton Sateen and matching mesh fabric help pls!
« on: April 15, 2019, 15:17:55 PM »
My friend is getting married end of June and I'd like to make this to wear.  I watched Pretty Little Liars with DD and one of the characters wore this dress and I've loved it since than and always intended making it.  Spotted the pattern on Lekala and the what-to-wear-to-the-wedding issue was solved!

Anyway, I have 2 different pairs of shoes that I could wear that are in similar tones so I'm looking for a stretch cotton sateen with matching coloured mesh in either teal (blue or green) or petrol blue.  Very specific I know and I may be searching for the unicorn but I'm not finding anything yet.  Any ideas peeps on where to buy or even alternative fabrics.

Thanks muchly!

Current Projects / Someone has crossed to the Dark Side

DD has loosely dabbled in sewing but has not shown huge interest in it.  She is now doing her Duke of Edinburgh and has to do a skill.  She needs to spend 1 hour a week for 12 weeks on it.  Since we have a veritable FQ stash (her pleadings to purchase), I suggested she do the Amy Gibson Block of the Month course.  I've had it since 2012 I think when it was published but have never done it and she has agreed.  She won't need to do the whole set and so will probably end up with a lap quilt.  We spent yesterday doing the first block and she was quite pleased with it.

Technical Help / Help - zip repair, replace or ditch?
« on: December 18, 2018, 11:51:35 AM »
I have a lightly padded jacket that I love but the zip has just broken.  The end stopper that goes into the base of the zip has broken; the plastic bit on the front has gone although the bit at the rear is still there, if that makes sense.  Can I just sew a stopper with waxed thread (and maybe a dab of clear nail varnish) or will it need a new zip, or worse be ditched.

Help me save my beloved jacket, pleeeaaaassssse! (the rest of the jacket fine).

Thanks,

Missie

Apologies for the title, but I couldn't think of a better one.

Everytime I log on TSP, I get an alert from AVG saying that they have isolated vividress.co.uk as it contains a malware file.  This happens on both my PC and my laptop.  I'd never heard of vividress (have now I've googled) and have never been on their site.  It happens only when logging onto this site.

Any ideas?

The Show Must Go On / Monica Tomb Costume
« on: November 23, 2017, 09:49:28 AM »
I'm currently in a play; its a murder mystery meets the Addams Family comedy, set in current day..  My character is a flamboyant writer who is over-dressed by everyone's standards (I am travelling in the play).  Here is my costume, a 1950's style dress.  I used a pattern for the bodice and then changed the neckline, and the sleeves and the circle skirt is self-drafted.  It is a least a 1.5 circle skirt, probably nearer 2 as I have insets front and back and the hem is about 34ft (eek, eek, eek).

Now I am putting this here as it is shockingly made.  It doesn't fit me properly.  I don't have time to do a proper fitting on the costumes so I make a size 18, whereas ordinarily, I would cut a 14-16 and do and FBA.  The finishing inside is shocking, well there is no finishing at all and it isn't lined.  I machine-hemmed it and didn't bother changing from the red thread when I hemmed the black bit.  As far as I am concerned, people are about 10-15ft away and won't see that and it will only be worn for this week only.  And yet, people have been coming up to me asking me where I got my dress, that it is stunning, and can't believe I've made it, which tickles me no end as it is nowhere near the standard I would accept for a personal wardrobe item of clothing.  So gals and guys, no matter how bad you think it is, to the non-maker, they will think it fab!

A Good Yarn / Dyeing Yarn?
« on: October 26, 2017, 08:19:00 AM »
I've been on the search for a while for 2 specific colours of yarn but cannot find it.  One is a burnt orange and the other a red-orange.  I am now thinking that I may have to have a go at dyeing it myself but how easy is it?  One would need to be an acrylic yarn (it is for a trim on a cardigan that I want to make) and the other, I haven't decided yet.  Has anyone dyed their own yarn?  Any tips,, pointers, advice to step away?

Thanks,

Courses & Classes / Craftsy Bra Making Courses
« on: October 02, 2017, 10:07:07 AM »
I've just been remeasured and was so wearing the wrong size!  What a revelation the right size is: boobs under my chin instead of my armpits and I look narrower/slimmer as well, win-win!  However, my size now puts me in the expensive to buy range (not so win-win) and a lot of them are ugly, with big fat straps etc.  I love lingerie (that and shoes are my weakness) so I'm thinking about having a go at making my own.  Just wondering if anyone has done the craftsy bra-making courses and what you thought of them. Does the class with bra patterns?  I couldn't work that out and it wasn't obvious to me (but I am a great skim-reader  :o)

Thank you.

Patterns Discussion / Decades of Style
« on: July 19, 2017, 14:45:23 PM »
I love the patterns that Decades of Style have and have hankered after a few.  I'm off to a ball in September and finally, I decided to get one of the patterns for their gowns. (https://www.decadesofstyle.com/collections/1940s-sewing-patterns/products/4011-1940s-point-made-gown

The pattern costs around £20 and shipping (from US) is a flat fee of not much less.  They are obviously trying to encourage you to buy more as in the FAQs, they emphasise the fact that you can buy more patterns without the shipping costs going up.  Well that is far too much money to pay for one pattern, so I shall simply drool over their patterns instead.....unless they decide to go down the PDF route.

Now to try and find another gown pattern I like!

Patterns Discussion / FBA and bagginess below bust
« on: July 10, 2017, 10:42:48 AM »
I've just about finished my Garden Party dress and have a fitting Q.  These days I have to do an FBA to get a good fit (cup size C-D), which is what I've done on this dress but I have quite a bit of bagginess on the front bodice below my bust (ie ribcage area between bust and waist)  If I pinch it out following on from the waist dart, the dart naturally wants to go as high as my bust point, which is wrong and gives me a pointy boob look.  The dress fits fine neck, shoulders, bust and waist but could do with tweaking in the ribcage area.   Its probably not noticeable to non-sewers and I can live with it, but it's not right and I'd like to fix it so I can use it as a basis for further dresses.

We've (had some help from sewing buddies) tried taking it out to the side seam, taking it into the waist seam, tried adjusting the back darts, but nothing works.  What did I do wrong? Did I do anything wrong? Any ideas on how to fix it without ending up with a pointy boob look?

Thanks,

Current Projects / Craftsy BOM 2015

I don't really do any quilting.  I've only made 1 in my whole life but I always sing up to the quilting courses in the hope that I will one day do one.  I love the Jinny Beyer one, just cos it was a bit different and I wanted to make it for my in-laws as a thank you gift (they have been utterly fantastic since DH & I split) but the kit was too expensive.  I looked for other fabrics that I could buy and build up the stash slowly but nope, nothing doing.  Then I just happened to be on the site on Black Friday last year and the kit was half price so I purchased it.

I have finally got around to starting it (with a little bit of help  :*)  I have handsewn it but I'm not sure I will continue as I'm worried it won't hold up;  however, it is nice to have a little project that I can do in front of the telly, so maybe I will!

But here is my first block.  It's not perfect, but I'm happy with it  :)

I've noticed that for about a week or so now when I click on "Recent Unread Topics", I get the message that there are no new topics, yet if I go into the individual forum pages, there are new posts that I've not seen.  Am I being daft?  Is there something I am missing?

In the wardrobe / Honig Design Garden Party Dress
« on: April 16, 2017, 11:51:36 AM »
Right, I'm committing this project to here, which means I have to get it done!

I started this at least a year ago and bought the fabric at least a year before that (a yummy patterned Art Gallery cotton; it's a pattern that kind of reminds me of a mandala, on a mustard background with coral, purpley-brown and white pattern and is far nicer than the hideous description I have just given lol).  I have done the initial adjustments (FBA and lengthening the bodice) and made a first toile.  I have some adjustments to do but being that it was toiled so long ago, I'm kind of guessing at what they should be (note to self write better notes on my toiles!).  I am determined to get this done as my summer wardrobe is sadly lacking!  So far it seems to have gone together quite well, especially as it is a freebie, except that my darts aren't straight and I can't work out why (and I can't find my pattern cutting book either - new cupboard is on my wish list!)

Will report back in due course!

Fun with Fabric / Yellow dots on black
« on: April 11, 2017, 12:35:02 PM »
Ok, your challenge, should you choose to accept, is to find me the above fabric, preferably in cotton and small dots, not big ones.  Is that pernickety enough for a challenge?

I have some lovely floral fabric (black background, kind of ditzy floral print in yellow and red, but the yellow is the more dominant colour, to me) which will not be quite enough for a top so I need to supplement it with another fabric and thought it might look nice with a black with yellow polka dots.  But I can't find any.  Has anyone seen any one their travels?

Thanks,  Missie

House Beautiful / Sofa re-upholster
« on: April 08, 2017, 16:52:08 PM »
I have a leather sofa that has seen better days.  The sofa covers are falling apart, literally.  There are holes in the leather, the seams are ripping.  I can't afford a new sofa and as the frame itself is good (and I still like the sofa), I want to recover it.  The trouble is, the cushions are fixed to the frame so I don't even know how to go about doing this.  Can anyone recommend a good book, or website to enable me to do this........and I have to do this as my in-laws have offered me their sofa as mine is "falling apart".

Thanks.
