Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: New overlocker tips
« on: March 02, 2024, 11:17:04 AM »
Even if I had that much money, I don't think I'd be tempted by it either. One thing that has struck me when reading this and other recent overlocker threads, is the extent to which overlockers now look much more like sewing machines. Is this an attempt to "normalise" them for domestic sewers do you think or does all that extra capability need them to be so different?

@grndkntrl that looks spectacular! OH doesn't seem to have inherited any of his ancestors skills - just as well, I wouldn't want him showing me up!

I received my regular list of "Hints" from Ancestry yesterday - they send genealogical information that other people have researched that may apply to your own ancestors. This one was a list of people who had been apprenticed in various trades in the 18thc. One of OH's ancestors, Susannah Wheadon of Crewkerne in Somerset, was apprenticed as a Mantua Maker. This meant nothing to me, but apparently:

Mantua | British | The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The mantua was a coatlike construction, with sleeves cut in one piece with the back and front. It was pleated at the shoulders and fell to the waist, where it was held in place by a sash. From there it was folded back into a bustle shape and worn over a matching petticoat.

@realale as discussed in another thread a short while ago, this is the one I have. There are newer models. As you'll see, the whole blade assembly part opens right back for threading - brilliant! It's also very easy to guage seam allowances, and it's possible to safely stitch right on the edge without cutting anything off - I have never yet needed to disengage the blade. The right needle is slightly awkward to thread but this is probably more a result of my eyesight than anything else! I found GUR very good to deal with. If they have a stand do have a look at these.

@Clduk I am 5 foot nothing and I don't buy specific petite patterns. I just shorten as necessary.

@Bill a new sewing machine is not at all the same thing as a new bike. It doesn't need to be tested in the same way.

Top(s). A dress in a lightweight fabric would only ever get worn very occasionally - unless of course your social calendar for this year demands such a thing.

Ooh! @realale - we are 9 miles from Devizes. Will have to see if I can get there. When you said the other day that you had visited the longest flight of locks, I thought you meant the one further up north - didn't realise you meant Caen Hill!
