Great tutorial @Sheilago  :)

Lovely clear tutorial @Sheilago - Thank you. :) I'll probably have a go at this (if I can find my sewing things under all the decorating mess). :S

@Lilian  ... Make sure you choose some heavyweight canvas and strapping for handles then ... and be careful when sewing through those thick layers ... I'd hate anything to happen to your machine!

@Kenora , wonderful stuff Darling ... Looking forward to seeing your creation

Great tute @Sheilago. Must have taken ages!  :o
I'd say I'm in but I tend to sleep all week-end now that I'm back to work so I'll do my best.

No rush @wrenkins , this is just for fun!

As to the tutorial, I made the bags, took the photos and wrote the instructions, but I had lots of help from @Iminei and I can personally testify that she has the patience of a saint! It was like my own personal tutorial tutorial 0_0

I'm in too - maybe just a tote bag, but possibly a makeup bag or two (they do count as bags, don't they?  :o )

I will definitely be following @Sheilago's brilliant tutorial too, but I might not be able to squeeze it into this month.

I will join in, not too sure what I will make yet, it might just be a drawstring bag to hold my knitting projects or maybe a new shopping bag.

I have been busy today .... finishing the second curtain and making lots of mistakes on my bag!

Yes really ..  I thought if someone bothers enough to make a tutorial we should try it ... after all what can we lose ???

So the cut off bits from the curtains are going to be made into a storage bag (the 2 piece one, Im not unrealistic) for my bedroom where there are many medications in paper bags which would look oh so much more innocent and appealing in a hand made (and coordinated, once the curtains are up) bag!

Photos incoming in a day or two (after I've claimed Flobears soul     )

I still plan to join in with this Bagathon, I just can’t start until next week as I’m in France at the moment. However, I did buy some fabric this afternoon here that I fell in love with. I plan to make a bag to carry my sewing machine or my coverstitch to our Sewing gatherings in Bracknell. What do you think?

I have started my bag - which will have to be finished by the end of the week as it is part of a birthday present.

It is medium weight dark denim, will have an embroidered flower on each side, and is just a simple tote bag that can be folded up and put into a handbag.  This means I won't be able to line it (boo!) but it will have French seams - in fact I have just discovered the pleasure of overlocking the first part of the French seam so that there is a lovely, regular bit of fabric inside the finished seam.

First two pictures:

150mm by 240mm - I bought a mega hoop (150 x 360) when I first had the machine and found out the hard way that 150 x 240 was the biggest it would take!

Just a heads up (and its probably obvious to all you experienced sewists) ...

But I found when sewing the seams on the lining where the turning through gap should be, this was a good tip ...

I stitched down and then where there should have been a gap, I back stitched at one point, carried on, then back stitched again and carried on till the end

Pressed the seam open ...  then cut through the stitches between the two back stitched points .... = perfect seams pressed open to slip stitch together after pulling the back through.

That seems like a really clumsy explanation but I know what I mean .. and hope you do too!

@Iminei What also works well is if you increase the stitch length for the soon to be reopened part, slightly easier to remove.

I'll be honest, I've  never washed my craft fabrics, even though my garment stuff goes in the machine the minute it arrives home. I do wash Rolls of Kraft tex, but that's to "texture" them.

I know I said I’d use the sewing themed fabric to make a sewing machine bag, (fabric pictured a few days ago below) but I’ve remembered that I bought some knitting themed fabric from Lady Sew and Sew many months ago to make my sister a knitting bag for her birthday. That date is early November just this thread has really jolted me into getting it done. Thank you for that!

Gorgeous fabric @Fabric Lover!   :)

I have finished my tote bag, and it has been filled with presents for my Mum.

The pictures of the whole bag don't show the colours well - the embroideries catch the light beautifully, so I have added separate photos of the embroidery to show that.  It is a simple tote bag, with the bottom corners sewn across to make a base.  The seams are French, and I have used a decorative stitch on the handles and the top hem, which I have tried to photograph, but as the thread is the same co,our as the fabric it is a bit hard to see!

Embroidery and French seams - not sure I can match that @Acorn  :) . Your mum will love that bag for sure.

I've just re-read @Sheilago 's original post and realised we're to post pics of our progress as well as fabrics. And to save revealing the finished articles 'til the last few days of October ...apparently, though I'm sure the odd sneak preview is no harm  :)

That’s a stunning bag @Acorn the embroidery is really lovely!

I’m making View A of tVogue9763/629 (http://https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.pinterest.ch/amp/pin/545850417312089952/)
I only have half a metre of the knitting fabric, isn’t quite enough. (The pattern recommends 1.0 but as long as you have about 85 cms by 60 I think this would be sufficient.)  My solution was to piece the fabric with plain red cotton. There is only one pattern piece so I added a separate base piece in where the red will go.

It's made up of 15 pieces (plus 13 pieces of interfacing) and the instructions in black and white are quite challenging to follow, but I'd made this before about 18 months ago for a friend's birthday. so how come I made such a pig's ear of the construction?  I'd nearly finished when I found a piece of lining I'd missed! So I had to unpick topstitching and seams from one zip to add it. Did that then realised I'd sewn the missing lining bit in back to front and had to unpick again  :|. Arghhh! Pay attention woman! . Oh and I'm leaving off the wrist strap because I deliberately cut it short then realised it was too short and the fabric's all gone. Shame cause It's a nice touch.

Oh well - nearly there  :)

Edit: A bit more info: the butterfly fabric I've had a few years and made several different small bags from it - none left now. The corners are Kraft tex - maybe I prefer the faux leather I used last time. The YKK zips came from an Etsy US company - 20 of them in 2 sizes so more pouches to come!

@Vezelay I don't usually wash fabric for craft but I have never used African wax fabric so wanted to check it wouldn't shrink  0_0  :vintage:

All pieces cut and ready to sew tomorrow, hopefully :)

If your bag needs to be shrink proof @Lilian then that makes sense  :). I've just seen your lovely bag fabric. I've  made craft projects from some African wax fat quarters previously and they were much admired (all credit to the fabric, not me ;)).

It's the first time I've done any sewing in my newly finished sewing room. I've posted pics of that in a new thread in Sewing Spaces and Furniture, if anyone's interested. -<

Looking forward to making more progress on my bag tomorrow.

@Lilian - you're right, it is curtain fabric, probably bought in the early 1990's when we moved in here. I bought extra to make cushions but had some left over. It's nice and thick for a bag though. :loveit:

@wrenkins Hi, I have cut up flexible-ish plastic type chopping board.  A long time ago I purchased a set of them in different colours.  I don't use them s they have a grainy finish and don't really work that well for chopping.  They have a rubberized underside and firmer top, it cut quite easily.  I will be put some pics up later so you will see what I mean.

PS the a's don't lways work on my keyboard!

Well, I had a disaster with the knitting bag I was making for my sister’s birthday!  I stupidly used some fusible interfacing that I had picked up at Sewisfaction’s Fabric Swap ( this was a great day otherwise) but there was a lot of this which had been donated and now I understand why! It looked fine when I first applied it but a few hours later when I’d put a zip in and done some machine embroidery it had bobbled pretty badly. It can’t be rescued now I’m too far down the road!

So, I popped up to Fabricland (should have looked in my stash really

Finished!

Didn't have any iron-on heavyweight so I sewed round some parts of the pattern to keep interfacing and outer fabric together.

I did have a bit of a practice at freehand thingy but it was too wobbly to be satisfactory. Mind you, having seen some photos  from an exhibition my other-sis-in-Wales attended, I think my 'wobbly' wasn't too desperately awful!

Having to use my Bernina 801 while Pfaff is in for repair, I discovered this unused foot in the kit. Not sure exactly what it's for as I have mislaid the instruction book but seemed to work well for stitch in the ditch.

Well I have done my bag. I'm afraid I didn't take progress pictures. I got quite demoralised and nearly didn't continue with it at all. I had bought a short leather skirt in a charity shop and I thought it would make what I have wanted for some time - a smallish bag to carry an umbrella, spare pair of shoes etc. that would fold up and go inside another bag if necessary.

When I unpicked it I was horrified - it isn't leather at all, it's PVC. I would have bet anything that I couldn't be fooled by it, but I was. I lost interest for a while, but I needed the bag so, until I can get another one done, here it is. I lined it with furnishing fabric and it has a magnetic catch to keep it closed. It would have looked better if I had interlined it with something quite stiff but then it wouldn't fold up so easily.

I forgot to say,  I used the waistband of the skirt for the strap. A bit tricky because it was slightly curved. I did order some D rings for fastening it, but they took so long to come that I just stitched it on.

@FloBear I think that is a stitch in the ditch foot.  I had a Pfaff one but it got left with my previous Pfaff.  It had that metal guide prong in the middle.

@FloBear - I have a no. 5 and a no. 10 edge stitch foot with the metal guide down the middle. They're both excellent for SITD. :)

Flobear being a Bernina foot, I would say that it is either the edgestitch foot No.10 for later models, or it is the blind hemmer foot, believe these are the only two feet that have that black piece of metal on them.  However I am not sure if these earlier Bernina feet were numbered, some are on my 830 Record, whilst others are totally blank.  You could find that this will be a very useful foot not only for what you have just stitched but try it for a bit of blind hemming and also using it as an edgestitcher.

On my 830 Record which is a later machine to the 801 the blind stitch foot has a number 016 and this is up just under the part that fits on to the machine,  on the edgestitch foot the number is lower down on the white piece.

@Elnnina It does indeed have 016 on it, and now you say 'blind hem foot' that rings a bell. I have never made a blind thing hem with it!

@Ploshkin I was going to ask you about your 'stitch in the ditch foot' but I figured it would have gone with your Pfaff.

In fact, I think the Bernina will be more use for many aspects of P&Q - assuming that I am forever condemned to abiding in the Dark Side - because she has 5 needle positions and the Pfaff has one.

Flobear regarding blind hemming, it does take a bit of getting used to, but the best thread I have found for using this method is Madeira Monofil No.60 this really is an ultra fine filiment and comes in two colours clear or smoke.  Now do not use the Madeira Monofil No.40 that is far too thick.

I used the No.60 on some Thai silk lining and it is lovely.

Now a very long time ago there was something I think called Perilusta and that is what they were using for blind hemming  and at that time it only came in a thickish thread and was horrible to use.  This new Madeira Monofil is gossamer like and comes on a reel a bit like the Sylko used to come in, and it holds 1000mtrs. (whereas the No.40 reel only holds 500mtrs).

Yes this Madeira is not easy to find, so I doubt very much any local thread place would stock this so it means looking further afield, but as you can see one reel of each is going to last you a very long time.

Incidentally I found that the instruction manual for the 830 Record is really clearly laid out and so easy to follow how to do things.  I have inherited my mothers 830 Record and this is my main go to machine these days as it had not been used too much, like all Berninas they are a joy to sew with, and when this first came to me I added a few extra feet, and one of those was the Edgestitch Foot No.10.  You can probably still get some of the old style feet and if you want to may I recommend using Bernina's own  warehouse down in Cardiff - the ladies there are so very helpful and it is always a quick dispatch, and they will ensure you get the right foot for your particular machine.  The Cardiff warehouse phone number is  029 2079 2079 and two of the ladies down there are Rachel and Jackie - they really do go the extra mile for you.

Also when I inherited my machine, at the time I came across some Sewing Leaflets produced by Bernina possibly for a later machine than my 830 Record, but I scoured various machine shops and the internet looking for these leaflets and have found them extremely useful, they comprised a set of 24 and they are called Bernina Sewing Service and cover all the feet and their uses, there are a few for the overlocker attachments.  Then I came across something else produced by Bernina and these were called Bernina Collection - I do not know how many they produced as I only have a few but again lots of lovely ideas showing you how to use your machine to its full potential.  I just need to find the time to stop and play.

By the way Bernina seem to have had a promotion going on through the year and have been offering foot of the month and often these have been reduced by a fair amount, so it is worth going and looking from time to time to see what they are offering.  www.bernina.com  and this is their own website.

@Elnnina How very kind you are to give me all that information about the Bernina. She's certainly not going to be consigned to the outer darkness loft ever again! The much newer Pfaff has some merits but has already had as many niggles in its 5 or so years as Bernina has had in nearly 40!

My very ancient Bernina has now been passed on to my daughter.
I did all the hems on the big curtains using it
I now have a Janome (the 2nd one) and although it does lots of things not as 'sturdy' as my old Bernina.
In fact Janome bought a year ago doesn't 'feel 'as good as the one I had for 11years although it has 1/4 inch foot witd foot and so on. I haven't tried blind hemming but it would be an interesting experiment.
Doesn't seem to go over bumps quite as well as the old one either.
Previous Janome is now with DOL (Daughter out law)

Pfaff has one.
@FloBear  You have a Pfaff Ambition don't you?  Mine had about 20 needle positions for straight stitching.  You just use the + / - stitch width control that you would use to change the width of a zig zag stitch.

I have nearly finished Littlest Bag but had forgotten just how much I hate sewing on poppers / press fasteners   Only two needed but I have now taken them off in disgust and may have to re-think. Or maybe try plastic ones as they're less likely to cut the thread. And I haven't got any. And I am car-less today. Maybe I'll knit instead  :[

A quick Bagathon update. Thought I'd get a few different bags made before the deadline but the weekend's booked up and my bro's arriving Monday so I'm running out of time.

One made and a second majorly unpicked because I sewed the inside pocket piece in upside down.  :'(  Careless!! But I'll finish it and post them both Monday morning - that's the plan. Nothing spectacular but they should come in handy for gifts.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone else has made and pinching ideas  :).

Thank you Sheilago,

It stands at 11" tall and is remarkably roomy, its not perfect as the lining seems a lil too big (my fault) but I like it ... who knows I may even make another ?!

I love both your cross body bags @Stitches  <3. Lovely work - what pattern did you use?

@Iminei - great bag (and curtains  :)), you did your gorgeous fabric proud.

And @Greybird, yours looks so professional! There's nothing wrong with faux leather, no animals suffered and the quality theses days is fab. I made a faux leather jacket so I'm probably biased - just don't call it pvc...

These are mine - both 10" x 6" approx. They will probably be gifts.

No. 1 has faux leather corners and a satin lining

No. 2 has Kraft-tex corners

Now I could do with a cross body bag...

Can’t believe we’ve now got to the end of the month and we can now see all the bags. They’re all looking great - some people will be lucky to get one of those bags as a present.  :D

These bags are all brilliant.  I'm afraid I didn't have any inspiration.

Oh yes - here's my bag, modest though it is.  The pictures of the bag are really bad, but somehow the camera wouldn't pick up the contrast properly, so I've added the close-ups too.  It has French seams and decorative stitching on the top hem and the handles.

It's now with its new owner (my Mum), who is loving and using it.

Here’s mine. Nowhere near as adventurous as the others, but it’s a gift for my sister, so I happy with it.
I still need to find a suitable button. I might have to visit some charity shops to see if there’s anything that might work. I’ve also been making little coin purses to trial as potential Christmas gifts.
I really enjoy these sorts of little projects.

Hmm. I think I may need to up my game a bit here. Stunning bags everyone  :D

Anyway, here's my effort. All made from a front door curtain that I had when the door wasn't double-glazed. The greeny fabric was left from piping I made round a matching bench cushion and the red starry fabric is the only new piece.

Daddy Bag, made as per instructions. 11.5" tall, 32" round. I'm keeping my belly-dancing hip scarves in it.

Next I made Baby Bag, 6" tall, 11.5" round, based on a sheet of A4 paper, to put inside my small rucksack which has no inner pockets so small stuff sinks to the bottom and sculls about. May need to adapt the fastening if it upends and things sneak out.

And finally, Mummy Bag 10" tall, 20.5" round, based on a tabloid newspaper. Idea pinched from Ploshkin who pinched it from someone else!  A handy sewing-bin, as you can see. Couldn't find a suitable flat thing for the weight so used a large pebble from the garden wrapped in leftover polyester wadding and wrapped again. If I find something better I can unwrap it and re-do.

Practised lots of rotary cuttering on these, a bit of sort-of quilting but not FMQ on Daddy bag and Stitch-in-the ditching on baby bag.

Oh yes, Bernina in the background as she did all the work  ;-)

@FloBear   people use heavy door hinges for the weighted bit.

Aw thanks @WildAtlanticWay .  I like using satiny fabric for bag linings. It can be a swine to work with but a light fusible interfacing helps stabilize it

Your bag is lovely, great fabric and plenty adventurous imo. Lots of patterns and colours there, so a plain navy, white or silver button could work well and easy enough to hunt down.

@Acorn, not a modest bag at all, very creative. I bet your mum will be so proud to say her daughter made it when it's admired.

I'll be absent from TSP for a week. My brother flies over today, then I'm away in Belfast so I look forward to admiring the remaining creations when I'm back  :)

PS @FloBear - 3 bags, get you! And I want a handy sewing bin just like that (including garden pebble). Brill

Yes, @Ploshkin I remember you saying but could I find any door hinges! I think I must have had a chuck-out when I tidied the garage two years ago. I'd had them for ever and decided I was never going to use them.

Here is my bag, following @Sheilago s  tute.  I decided to use webbing for the handles and take it all the way down and underneath (basically a large hoop) as I wanted it to carry my featherweight machine.  I also put a loose removable base pad to steady it.  I also rolled the lining out to show a little at the top.  I padded the top of each handle so it would be comfortable on the hands.  I put a pocket on one outside to take extra bits and bobs.

Thanks @Sheilago :)

@FloBear , no need to up your game at all, they’re great. That sewing bin is a good idea- might copy that.
@Lilian , your sewing machine bag looks perfect: clever to hide the wadding straps between the 2 layers.  I’d have stuck them on the outside, which would have been much less attractive.
I plan to make a few more for Christmas, but still lots of time! :P

@Iminei the hinge(s) are just for the weight.  I used one of DH's vintage show plaques (he hasn't noticed one missing).  It's covered in fabric.  I put stuffing/waddling on top before covering it so that it can be used as a pincushion.

I love all the bags everyone.

Here is my bag, a knitting bag made for my sister’s birthday. I used this pattern  (http://https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/727064519/kwik-sew-pattern-k118-ellie-mae-designs?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_uk_en_gb_c-craft_supplies_and_tools-other&utm_custom1=_kenshoo_clickid_&utm_content=go_325939368_20231685168_88477486128_pla-106551294035_m__727064519engb&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6eTtBRDdARIsANZWjYbxyqgNTe1lq5HFLMSYmqiVEhhIGHTck-4gp9oV_QuHLN4M3wV-AlsaAh_yEALw_wcB)
with navy, green and white fabric. I lined it with some white cotton machine embroidered with a knitting design I downloaded.  [attachmentid=2 msg=143352]

I’m not sure I would recommend this pattern, in some ways I wish I’d used stronger wadding/ interfacing. But on the other hand turning the bag from inside out to finish was a nightmare due to the narrow straps which are part of the bag itself. That would have been impossible I think with heavier wadding. Still my sister loves it so that’s the main thing!

Variation on the Bagathon theme- made a very quick ( i.e. not perfect )  carry cot this afternoon for my little granddaughter to carry her doll in. She is only 16 months old : a baby herself, but she adores playing with her baby! It is quite long, so had to hand sew the corners in to help it keep its shape.
