but I really couldn't be bothered making one.

That's what I thought until I made one (two now).  They are so unbelievably comfortable - no more yanking down the bottom all the time or putting up with straps that are too short and...... I don't have to have just black, white or grotty beige any more which is usually all you can get in unwired ones.

When did armholes become armscyes?  I will continue to call them armholes.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Re: Colour choices

I think one issue with jelly rolls is that you get rather a lot of middling tones and not enough contrasting strips. My first quilt top (yet to be backed and quilted) was from a jelly roll but I wouldn't use one again unless I was wanting something quite random.  Pam and Nicky Lintott's books (from The Quilt Room) are good for jelly roll patterns.

I think if you can pick out one or two colours and find a much brighter shade to use as background / sashing / border etc they could surprise you.
You've probably realised the washing was not a good move.  I did that to a pieced jelly roll quilt top that had been stored.  I can't remember how long it took me to trim off all the tangled, frayed threads and press the seams but it seemed like forever.

A Good Yarn / Re: Starting a Sweater

The jury's still out on the bottom finish.  There are some increases in the sides of the body so it is slightly A shaped.  The good thing about knitting top down and in the round on a cable is that I can try it on whilst still on the needles.
I have got a very nice, stable crochet finish on an edge to edge cardigan that I knitted and I might try that after casting off the garter stitch to stop it curling.  I thought I would try a couple of samples of different things to see what they do.
At least, finishing off at the bottom, it is only a couple of rows to unpick and re knit if it's not right.

Iminei, how can you doubt your ability to sew garments when you can produce a welt pocket like that?
If it's to be reversible then I can only think of a flat fell seam so there are no visible raw edges.

I was beginning to think BOM had lost its appeal!

There are a lot of things competing for my time at this time of year especially if the weather is half decent.  I've had visitors all weekend so I felt like a quiet couple of hours to myself in the sewing room - it's too hot to do much outside in the middle of the day anyway.

Here is my BOM.  For those who haven't ventured on to the Japanese sewalong thread, the 3 kimono fabrics are the ones I am using for my Japanese garment - a kimono style robe.  The background fabric is the wrong side of some cotton lawn left over from a top I made.  I found it a bit tricky using 3 different types of fabric, especially the floppy lawn, and of course, was on the penultimate bit before it occurred to me that I could have used starch.

(I've already written this but it seems to have disappeared - it will probably appear twice now)
That is lovely Lowena, it's the first actual sashiko thing I've seen, I've only seen samples of stitches before.

Sewalongs and Competitions / Re: The Sewing Place 1st Mystery Quilt

I've got a bit of a logjam at the moment with the Japanese thing, the BOM (still looking for a background fabric ) and the mystery quilt to do and don't seem to be getting any opportunity to sew.  Hopefully next week.

The gathers around the sleeve head are just to help ease it into the armhole.  With a woollen garment you do a lot of pressing and steaming to help it shrink to fit neatly.  The finished sleeve head will not look gathered at all.
When you gather a sleeve head (or anything for that matter) you do 2 parallel lines of stitching about 2mm apart.  That gives you much neater / smoother gathers and makes it much easier in this situation where they are for easing.

There is someone who often has 70s Husqvarna bits on e bay including cam stacks.  I've got 2 Viking 3600 machines that I'm hoping to make one from as they have different faults.  Unfortunately it is plastic bits that go. I might get on to it one day.
