the Craftsy set up is odd, and lets you update the expiry date of the card after you've paid - which I've never seen anywhere else. if I attempted to pay with a card with the wrong expiry date the bank should definitely throw it out. To be fair you could probably change just about any other detail too like the card number and its definitely not going to work after that.

@WildAtlanticWay you're not thinking of direct debit are you? because that accesses your account directly and grants the holder the ability to update the amount and doesn't expire until the end of the contract? while card payments should respect the details provided on the card and if they're wrong the bank should refuse them as they appear to be fraudulent.

I edited the expiry date of my credit card to May next year to prevent renewals- theoretically their system should error it or the CC company will throw a tizz because the details arent right...

Manuela, that is a nice looking machine, I like the colour! looks very sturdy too!

Bodge - theres a few Singers that the Throatplate rises rather than dropping the dogs - but specifically 500a and 401 (I think its the same for 500 and before Slant-o-matics (but not the 300a)

I think I got the needles for mine from Ebay,

but it sounds like you have it well in hand. It is a very dinky industrial, or a very sturdy 99.

I love how cute these machines are! but they're beasts... they are so rounded and well proportioned its easy to over look how big they are and they really are big! and can manage something like 3500 Stitches per minute... which is terrifying.

Hope you enjoy it and can get it stitching nicely soon!

i have a soft spot for 95Ks they're cute... like a 99 but massive and heavy yet oddly stumpy, I hope you enjoy it, I think they're cracking good machines - but I need a motor for mine that uses home current without blowing the circuit...

I hope you'll show us and tell us all about it?

Ebay or Gumtree are good places to look, hone your searches for local area and collection only and there are some nice bargains to be had - if you see one thats further afield Shipley can sometimes be very helpful and efficient.

and check the current that it uses - my 95k has a 500w motor that has made it a complicated mistake really.

Having said that there are some good and compact servo motors on ebay if you can only get the head or the motor looks dangerous.

good luck and please share your progress/hunt!

Hi, I'm new... / Re: I haven’t even bought a needle yet....

Hi @Gavin,

Thanks Brenda!

I would suggest either the Singer 15 or the 201 - they're both very available machines and tough use standard needles and bobbins and parts and spares are widely available as is advice. I would probably look on local Gumtree or Ebay. the reason for this is they are ferociously heavy so you'll save a lot on PnP and you can see the machine yourself. I think you are looking for a workhorse, so you can choose one which is a little battered (faded decals and enamel wear) rather than being prissy about a collectors piece.

I would probably look for the cast iron model of the 201 and the 15 only comes in cast iron they will be heavier and give you better stability when you use them, especially with heavier fabrics.
the 201 has a larger 'harp' space - the area between the bed and the neck of the machine, which might be helpful when handling large pieces of ridged fabric.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
the cast iron 201k; most have roughly the same format the real tell tale feature for me is the round plate with the stitch length lever in it
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
the 15k - again theres a lot of these but they all have roughly the same format they were also popularly knocked off by japan and there are lot of later ones of these in different colours. Japanese manuafacturing was very good and some people say they're as almost as good as the originals.
the tell tale on these for me is the bottle shaped neck.

there are other makes and models that will do nicely but they can be scarce - old pfaffs for example - Pfaff 30s are like tanks. Crestas can be brutal, but singers are plentiful and more likely to be a bargain!

If you want me to have a look at any gumtree finds just let me know, but I can't promise a swift turn around.

As an aside are you anywhere near Norfolk? I have a 201 that works but could do with a good home.

@Greybird

I'm inclined to say probably no, because they are usually configured for standard low shank machines, and occasionally for slant shanks. However if you have a low shank adapter then it should work with that.

Otherwise I have heard of people getting a handcrank 99/66/201 specifically to attach one of these to for making buttonholes.

I am now the proud owner of a vintage Greist buttonholer (thanks Efemera), but have no clue how to set it up.

If the offer of a scan of your manual is still open, I'd love to take it up.

Thanks

bm

Theyre very straightforward, you slide the bottom towards you slip in the template and turn the big dial on the top until everything is at it lowest point and then test it to check placement and youre good to go... more or less:

here is also a copy of my manual for an older model:

I just looked on ebay for one of these devices. There was one from Canada cost about £6 with £53 postage. :faints:

Hi @Starryfish
they can be found for less than that they're just usually miss listed and theres usually a fair few on ebay,
Happy to help if you're interested.
