Embroidery and Embellishment / Re: Alternatives to 505 adhesive?
« on: April 12, 2017, 22:31:28 PM »
Thanks everyone for your ideas. I use it as sparingly as possible and always on the stabiliser. Stick on stabiliser isn't really appropriate in the particular situation I've had a problem with. It was a baby blanket which the mum wanted the baby's name embroidered on so it really needed to be tearaway. Mum has washed the blanket twice and it still has some adhesive residue. I'll give the double sided tape a try and the safety pins. The outline tack down could work in some applications. All worth trying. Thank you.

Embroidery and Embellishment / Alternatives to 505 adhesive?
« on: April 10, 2017, 17:45:36 PM »
Does anyone have any good alternatives for 505 adhesive for temporary fixing of fabric to stabiliser when it is too thick to be hooped? 505 works well but I've found it difficult to remove from the fabric afterwards in some circumstances, even with machine washing.

In the wardrobe / Re: Seam ripper moment or creative opportunity

Ah.....project rescue. I wear out seam rippers faster than socks. I always have at least six knocking about in the sewing room to "enhance my creativity" ahem!  :'(

A bit of a 'do' / Re: Dinner dance dress

The two Butterick patterns people have mentioned would be lovely in taffeta as they'd make great use of its "sticky outy" properties. (As you can see my command of the English language needs as much work on it as my stash!) The Vogue one is too drapey for taffeta in my humble opinion. Whatever you do I'm sure it will be beautiful.

The Show Must Go On / Re: Kitri base skirt

There are more expert tutu makers than me on here but I would say you can do either if, as I understand it (I've never made one), the Kitri is usually a bell type tutu.

The Show Must Go On / Re: Tutus that Dance UK Seminar

The advanced one is already full, I hear. These seminars were where I REALLY learned to make a tutu. Suzanne is a brilliant teacher. If you're new to tutu making you can't really do better than attend one of these.

I don't worry about getting it completely flat as I like a bit of movement in the skirt. Just a personal preference.

Hi, I'm new... / Still Sew no!
« on: March 13, 2017, 09:55:51 AM »
Hello all. I've been missing you! I've been sewing for upwards of 50 years (yes, I'm that old... :() which has given me the opportunity to make LOTS of mistakes. I've even learned from some of them! Nowadays mainly make tutus and dance costumes, some clothes for yours truly and wedding stuff for family members. Look forward to making your acquaintance.
