Having been requested by SIL for a quilt, and pointing out he will be 4th in the queue he seemed undeterrred so now to work out how
the hell to do it
I found what he wanted on Google and then searched for a way that is within my capabilities. I hit on the idea of a Dresden pattern when I saw this

Thanks @BrendaP for your input. Those numbers will be useful I think.
This is a long term thing but it gives me an aim
At least there won't be a lot of decsions about colours!
-
Oh ouch - that's come out a bit too large - help!
-
The size is OK - it's 1,080px wide which is only a little larger than can be displayed. 900px is ideally the maximum, but I'm certainly not bothered about a few extra pixels!
I could transfer @BrendaP 's post from the Today thread, but the software will put it at the beginning of the thread because of the time it was posted, so here it is quoted:
It depends on how smooth you want the circles to be.

If you make a long strip of red and white stripes and then use a wedge ruler;
9 degrees (https://www.minervacrafts.com/shop/quilting/rulers-and-templates/nl4156-sew-easy-9-degree-mini-wedge-quilting-ruler?gclid=CjwKCAiAnIT9BRAmEiwANaoE1W0Qzu_KW8_WiRvnGyEsMtBELJzy00uWNf0xeyejoFBkfZEmAaSCgxoCHDYQAvD_BwE) for 40 wedges or 10 degrees (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sew-Easy-Quilters-Quilting-Ruler-Degree/dp/B004T2ICVY/ref=asc_df_B004T2ICVY/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=345485970201&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8651424542324250687&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9044964&hvtargid=pla-720521535005&psc=1) for 36 wedges and you make the wedges fairly big (full length of the ruler?) the angles will be barely discernable. The star in the middle would be doable by piecing or by applique. Joining the circles to the centre will be the hardest bit to do other than by 'applique'. Probably the easiest way would be to make the middle with a good amount of seam allowance and then place the finished circle over it and either turn the edge of each wedge and topstitch or just satin stitch right around the whole lot.

Oh Thank you @Acorn
I am very grateful
I thought the picture seemed huge but hey ho
-
That should keep you out of mischief @Bjay
-
It's been a while since I opened this thread but I amnow ready to begin this project
Thank you @BrendaP for pointing me in the right direction.
I have been making the templates for the wedges today.
Star is a problem at the moment but I will solve it
Fabric has been bought and am now raring to go. Just hope it all fits together when I begin the construction

Beej, I'm not sure if you have a working printer. If you do just bingle 'printable 5 pointed star' and you get lots of choices. If you print out the style you want, say A4 size, find the centre by drawing from each point you will then have the 5 'spikes' at the correct angles. You can then extend each spike to the correct length and draw in the star the size you want.

If you extend in both directions - as with the red line - you can accurately position the inner corners of your star as well.
-
That's the problem, Flo- Mrbeej, in his wisdom, tried to do some priniting a few weeks back - goodness knows what and the printer decided not to work after that adventure!
Worked fine for me the day before :headbang:
I could print off and enlarge as you have demonstrated but.....
-
A star is easy- all you need is a protractor and a ruler.
Draw a circle the size of the inner circle. A circle is 360deg, divided by 5 star points, 360/5=72. "Slice" your circle into pie slices that are 72deg at the center tip. Connect every second point (where the slices cross the circle) to create the star.
-
@Bjay This is (the only reason) why we did geometry at school. Were you looking out of the window that day? ;)
-
@WendyW That was exactly the method I mentioned to Bjay on the other forum but I didn't know that she definitely had a protractor because she used to teach tinies!
@Deafoldbat , I loved geometry, it was practical and made sense. Unlike algebra where you had to make sums with letters and leave out the multiplication signs
-
I know - just it's a long long time since I needed to use geometry
Thanks all I'm just old and stressed!
-
So following instructions - Flo, Wendy w and another Flo sister I have a perfect 5 pointed star.
Showed Mrbeej - not a complement but a 'where did you get that from?'
Thankyou both.
Total mind freeze yesterday :S
Just waiting for the interfacing now
-
A quarter of the shield for Capt America is now sewn up, next half is cut and ready to go tomorrow.
I do need to buy more red as the Ruby blocks used more than I thought. Hopefully Doughty's still have some in stock, if now I'll shop around. It could be slightly different shade as it's for the border. Will have to see

-
Excuse my ignorance but who or what is Captain America?
What's the relevance to a quilt?
-
Capt America is a comic book hero that has become a film hero.
That's as much as I know except he carries a shield etc.
SIL and dughter have a 'games' room where they have a giant TV and play video games and entertain in it so they thought a 'throw' on a tattty sofa would brighten it up and use it for 'snuggling' with
I'm just designing and making it (they say they are paying)
-
Thank you :)

Needs a few small tucks to make it lie flat in the centre but not strictly necessary as it will be covered by a star anyway.
Next learning curve is machine applique, I haven't done it before but will look on Youtube and in a couple of books - oh a couple of practice runs i think
-
Someone on the forum said they had a machine with lots of things that they have never tried out - well same here. (was it @Lowena?)
Out came the manual and there were 2 possible stitch patterns. Tried them both - one was a zig zag and the other was for applique.
No comaprison on my trial run applique stitch it is - so pretty like a smalll neat blanket stitch.
CuT out the interfacing and pinned it on the fabric, carefully cut it out, pinned it on the circle ( I had to make a couple of small tucks to make circle lie flat)
Stoods back to admire my handiwork, Mrbeej came iin and said - 'very nice but the star should be up to the red not with space around it.
Huh I thought brought up the picture and yep - he was right :headbang:
Thank goodness I hadn't begun sewing. New bigger pattern cut out but will do the final cut tomorrow.
I can still use the star as I was thinkng of making a cushion to match anyway
-
Ooo it's looking bang on so far. Good luck with take 2 of the star :D
-
Star is appliqued on. I'm very pleased with it even though I say so myself. That applique setting was brilliant. There are 4 small stars to be applied as well but a lot smaller, hopefully I'll be able to applique them as well.
Not sure what I do next
Probably work out how to put the shield onto the background without having large quantities of fabric being sewn in one piece
-
I have attached the shield to background and have used batting between the shield and the fabric to make it more 3Dish!
Think it works but still need to do lots of stuff before i get to the sandwich stage
(https://i.postimg.cc/RV4Kzp36/IMG-20210218-152249.jpg)
I found that my new needles have disappeared, I think they must have been re moved when it went to be serviced by the guy/ A pack of quilting ones and also half a pack of general use.
Does anyone know where I can buy some with a quick return please?
-
Ironing Press Company or Couling Sewing Machines - both got needles to me within a day last week.
Looking good!
-
That's looking great!
-
Bjay that's looking really good! I wish my machine had an applique function, I had to sew the centre of my latest project by hand.
And I am definitely NOT showing this to son 3 as he is really into the Marvel Universe (comic book heroes) :D
-
!! Wow, it's looking great!
-
Go on @Lottie - show him. I can provide you with instructions of a sort and fabric quantities ;)
-
@Bjay it’s off to a great start! Looking forward to seeing more.
-
Inspired by @Iminei Elvistoo's labels and a wonderful person called Meg who has passd on to quilt in the sky, I decided to have a go at my own label,=.Well the machine does letters so I have spent a large part of the afternoon attempting a label written on a star. Sort of done it, bit lopsided but it is my own very simple label :)
It is now sewn onto part of the quilt.
Next is deciding whether to do 3 borders - red, white, red or 2 borders - white , red
Tomorrow is another day
-
(https://i.postimg.cc/zf5vhHwV/IMG-20210221-144219.jpg)
It will have a double border - white then red - looks tidier.
Can't sew anymore until new sewing needles have arrived. On order - thanks @Acorn
-
The other day I shortened the length of this by 6-7ins. Looks a bit more in proportion now
Then today I began to attach borders  and :headbang:
Applied narrow white one to 2 long sides and then applied a red border to white one. I just forgot to put anything on the narrow sides .Means I'll be the unpicking queen again adding a white border to the top and bottom and then the red one. I do know I don't need to unpick all just small lengths but what a plonka
Tomorrow is another day - should have gardened instead!
-
Managed to correct my error - phew
Tomorrow, as long as my knees and back hold up I will get the sandwich made.
I have another learning curve with the quilting as i want to ensure equidistant straight lines so I'm going to attempt to use the space bar that comes with a walking foot
(https://i.postimg.cc/bvbJ8J87/IMG-20210226-162154.jpg)
-
Interesting fact that may only apply to Husqvarna Vikings... if you put the spacer thingy on the wrong side of your walking foot your machine will tell you its motor is overloaded even though it hasn't done anything. That's because it will be upside down and will stop the machine from being able to lower the needle.
I don't really need to tell you how I know that, do I?
(It is actually pretty obvious whether it's right or wrong as long as you know there's a difference.)
-
Wow!!! @Bjay . What progress since I've been incommunicado. That border really sets it off.
When I have a usable sewing space, I need to come up with a design to appliqué in the centre of my birdie quilt with the piano key edges. I know who to turn to for appliquéing hints
-
@Acorn A practice run neede then?
Not even sure at the moment where it goes
@Flobear thank you
-
Batting sandwich is made. I use piins but I am going to baste around the shield shape and then see ow rest of it goes.
Plenty of the blue bacjubg left, just right for Saphires I think
-
Quilted 3/4 of quilt - folowing lines in case The thingywotsit was wrong way up!.
Will finish that in half hour tomorrow than I will be securing the border and measurung and cutting binding .
Nearly there (https://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0213.gif)
-

Just the binding to go and a few loose ends to be tied up.
Gardening can be so time consuming!
-
Indeed it can Bjay! Captain America looks amazing
-
Wow @Bjay that looks very striking I'm sure the recipient will be very happy.
-
I didn't reach my target. I've learnt a lesson though - fussy binding is difficult to work out especially when you want all the faces the same way up!
Got to what I thought was sewing stage when I thought I had better check in the 'bible' - not done enough bindings in my quilting life to know 'where to go'
Yep not quite right, so unpinned , pressed binding, rolled it round a tube and made a cup of tea having put stuff away.
Tomorrow is another day! :)
-
Faces! Oo-er :faints:
-
Sactly - bad choice of design idea!

That's really lovely @Bjay Well done :toast:
-
That's brilliant (and I love your slippers!)
-
You've made a brilliant job of that. Well done. It looks fab.
Sandra.

Fab - u - lous!

Captain America has finally bveen handed over to the person who asked me for it.
He seemed very pleased and sent me a photo with it wrapped around him
I made a small cushion cover as well out of left over red and white stripe and a star I made which was too small
-
Oh wow @Bjay thats stunning.
-
It's amazing @Bjay ! I love the idea of Dresden plates to make shield. And your quilting choices were perfect.
It's also something I'll never show my spouse or he'll want one too
-
Thak you
It wasn't difficult to make up you know!
