Title: July's BOM - Churn Dash +
Post by: Iminei on July 01, 2020, 10:32:19 AM
We have entered Part 2 of the Catastrophe that is 2020

and again we have a TWO Part Block of the Month ...

Both blocks use techniques you have already learnt,

Remember, for the eager beavers amongst us, that all these blocks need to be  layered and quilted ready to assemble in the Autumn.

Tutorials for the various techniques are available in The Darkside Tutorial  (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,10266.0.html)thread

Do read right through the JULY's BOM before you start!!!

So without further ado ...

here we are at the SIXTH BOM of the 2020!

JULY's BOM (https://photos.app.goo.gl/STenA9z5Dw9T4fcC8)

There will be Twelve 12" blocks for this years BOM:
Some months you will have two blocks to make and some only one.

In October I will guide you through layering and quilting your blocks
and in November I will take you through  assembling them, using a QAYG method,
into a fabulous lap or cot sized quilt (or even a series of comfy cushions.)

And everyone who finishes the year with a completed quilt (or full series of cushions)
will receive an exclusive The Sewing Place Prize Winners Badge or Sew on Patch

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]      [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I have chosen a monochrome theme with pops of colour for my quilt,
you may choose whatever colourway/theme you like ...
Brights, plains, patterns, pastels, neutrals ... the choice is yours!

As ever when you click on the link, select the first picture,
and click on the i icon to bring up the destructions
on the right side of your screen.

Do read through The Basic Basics Thread before you start.

Please post pics of your blocks each month and by the end of the year we will have a fantastic album for the archives

It looks great - thanks for all your hard work @Iminei . 0_0  It also looks like I might be able to use up some of the smaller pieces of fabric I have left, so all good. :)

Sewing away on the dakside quilt  and thinking about what to do next I have decied to leave the quilt ready for borders and move onto the BOM.
I'm using bright colours for that and what can go wrong?(https://www.animatedimages.org/data/media/1309/animated-laughing-image-0049.gif)

Or put the right side of one piece to the wrong side of another.   (I do this at least once in every project.)

The jacob's ladder looks nice but the churn dash I'm going to disguise as something else using the sum of it's parts.  0_0

I've just caught up with Feb and March, haven't got as far as the little 6 inch blocks but I may do that tomorrow, then onto July. I really like the Jacob's ladder, but never actually made one, so looking forward to that. Then I must think about quilting some of the blocks. Onward and upward!

Just occured to me that I need to look at quillting. I sorted out the backing fabric yesterday and just hope I have enough, So it's down to practusing and trying different quilting patterns
I don't have a clue about FMQ, not even sure i can drop the feed thing.
That's what it is all  about though - lernin'
Title: Re: July's BOM
Post by: Flobear on July 03, 2020, 12:44:49 PM
I can't contemplate QAYG until I get my Pfaff back because I need the IDT device (Pfaff equivalent to walking foot). I could try FMQ on the Bernina as I can drop the feed dogs and I have a darning foot but I feel I need to find out a bit more about how to do it and do lots of practice before deciding if I can make a decent stab at it for this project.

Lovely Bjay ... just The Churn Dash+ to make and you can be one of the first to snaffle one of Sheilago's scones ...

The wonderful thing about QAYG is that you only need squares an inch or so larger than your block for the backing as opposed to great swathes of yardage .... which means you could get the backing for a block out of a FQ.

We're up to 10 blocks now peeps ... just two more to go, but of course I might throw in a couple more so you will be able to choose your favourites for your quilt.

In addition having the extra blocks means you could go for a 16 blocks quilt (4 x 4) the 12 we originally aimed for (3 x 4) or even a diddy 9 block quilt (3 x 3)

If you're worried about backing fabric, Why not mix it up a bit ???

Up to now I have just used yellow fabric without thinking about it too much. I realised I need to echo what has gone before in the next few Blocks.
So thinking about that churn one I decided to use the fabric with large spots - nope - only small scraps so I set out the blocks so far to see what I could use

To my surprise it's beginning to look like something and not just Blocks

Title: Re: July's BOM
Post by: Iminei on July 07, 2020, 11:36:54 AM
THAT is a very good idea ...

Lay your blocks out and see what there is too lil of, what you have overdone and make a note for this months / next few blocks.

Im aiming that you have more than 12 blocks, if you make each and everyone, so you can choose your favourites or upsize your quilt from 12 to 16 blocks... and there's nothing wrong with a wee 9 blocker!

Each block will be 12" add an inch or two for your joining strips/binding and you could be looking at an approximate  finished size of

  9 blocks  (3 x 3)  38" square ...
12 blocks  (3 x 4)   38" x 50"  ...
16 blocks  (4 x 4)   50" square ...

I see what you mean about enlarging the log cabin. It's looking a bit on the small side already without having the strips added..  :[ not sure I'll be arsed to revisit it though.

Yeah....I'm thinking about it, and I know it will be better if I add to it, but I'm a lazy cow so I don't know if it will happen.

You'll be pleased to hear that I've started to quilt! one of my blocks.  :)
It's the yellow and green one and so far, I've stitched four overlapping circles. I like it. Don't know whether to leave it as it is or if I should put more. I'm not a quilter so this is unknown territory to me.
I think I need to leave it as it is for now. Don't want to get carried away, but if I later have a Good Idea, than I can do a bit more.

When your block is under the needle ..

Hold your hands, palm down, flat on either side of the needle slightly pulling it taut ... Does that make sense?

So easy to show, so difficult to describe.

I read somewhere about quilting gloves @Bjay . I think they're non-slippy things to help you hold the fabric taut. Maybe one of the lovely TSPers can comment on their usefulness.
Title: Re: July's BOM
Post by: Acorn on July 26, 2020, 20:00:12 PM
I used gloves when I stipple quilted my last quilt - first time I'd FMQ-ed anything bigger than a block - and I certainly found it very easy to control my quilt (not enormous - about 50in square).  I haven't tried without them though!  I will use them next time anyway (well, I will now that you've reminded me @Flobear!)
Title: Re: July's BOM
Post by: supergran on July 26, 2020, 20:41:30 PM
light weight gardening gloves work as long as they have the rubbery nobbly bits on the palm side. Much cheaper than quilting gloves and not so devastating when you put them away and lose them. As I do, all the time!
Title: Re: July's BOM
Post by: Kenora on July 29, 2020, 14:15:15 PM
I use very lightweight quilting gloves - really useful, but they must be comfortable otherwise you won't feel confident wearing them. They also need to breathe as hands can get very hot while quilting. :)
Title: Re: July's BOM
Post by: Syrinx on July 29, 2020, 14:20:50 PM
Top tip if you're doing anything fiddly with FMQ (like bubbles/feathers/anything small) is to not use your palms, but your fingertips. You get much more control over the smaller delicate and complicated movements. Palms are great for big things like flowing lines, but not so great for smaller twisty things. Another is getting a steady medium/fast stitch speed, the slower the needle goes the harder it is to FMQ.

@Sandra - the best tip I ever received was to ditch my ironing board and to make myself a small pressing board which is only used for blocks. I used a square piece of heavy duty plywood which was covered with one very thin layer of wadding, then a cotton cover stapled on over the top. It's almost rock hard - not like the usual pressing board - and I don't usually need to use steam either. My blocks changed immediately from wrinkly to steamrollered!  :)

Oooh! Thanks for the tip.  :)
I'm sure I'm not as neat and accurate as you though, so that will explain some of my wrinkles.

Oh! I've been planning one of those because I reckon the fabric can't get away from you into the softness of an ironing board.
Does that make the points meet up perfectly too????  :ninja: Just thought I'd ask.  :S

Well Mr Wrenkins is me so I'll pick some up tomorrow when I'm out. The piece in my garage is too small and also boggin a bit grubby.

I have mine!  (He volunteered to go and look, honest!)  It was a bit cobwebby, but we gave it a vigorous brushing and I think it will be OK.  It's a bit larger than necessary - maybe 18in square, but I can cope with that, no need to cut it down.

Oh, no...everyone's going to have steamrollered blocks except me!  0_0
I need some heavy duty ply  I have a useful big brother who might be able to help...

Haha - in the cold light of day my plywood is actually 23inches square!  No matter, I will just need more than a fat quarter to cover it!  It will still fit behind a bookcase when not in use.

You can buy these from the big boys or make them yourself.

I have a small one made by a local lady who sells them ridick cheap and a professional one from Omnigrip (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dritz-Omnigrid-Foldaway-Portable-Pressing/dp/B001CEANBY/ref=asc_df_B001CEANBY/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=205189075860&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4444825848987164735&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006533&hvtargid=pla-307206394925&psc=1&th=1&psc=1) which is just glorious and has a cutting mat too ... It all folds up together to contain your half made blocks from the workshop you've just attended (If ever again!)

I have been moaning about my ironing board for ages - now i know why. (not used for clothes(https://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/emb/t1815.gif)
Bet Mrbeej doesn't have any as his train set uses thinner stuff, I can but ask!

A FQ came today - well several - but the one is a really yukky yellow, that will do fine for pressing on.
Now I have everything almost - FQ, wadding, staple gun, somewhere to stiore it but no ......

I use a piece of chipboard from my watercolour painting days. It is 1cm thick and 14 x18 inches, covered with several layers of old flannelette sheeting.  Works perfectly  :)

@wrenkins - my pressing board is approx 15" square.

The board is 45cm x 30 cm - Took a FQ with a bit left over. I had to go for a size that didn't require cutting, fits nicely on kitchen work top, not to big but will take  12ins block

Speedy Beej  :faints:  I have one I made earlier but it doesn't take a 12.5" block. Very useful, though.
