Title: Refashion & Upcycle competition - 1-30 June 2021
Post by: SewRuthieSews on May 30, 2021, 17:43:01 PM
Welcome to TSP's Refashion & Upcycle competition

1st - 30th June 2021

The aim of this contest is to re-use existing items instead of cutting into new yardage. These can be from a charity shop, friends/family or the depths of your own wardrobe/linen cupboard.
Take an item or items and create a new and different garment/accessories.

Rules:
Label your submission clearly as an entry, and number if you have more than one entry.
A photo of your source (the initial item or items) and another photo of the final item must be included in your entry. Additional pictures may also be included.

The garment/accessory must be sewn. Self-drafted patterns or commercial patterns may be used; they may be previously used or new. More than one source item can be used to create the final product.

The original item or items must be changed substantially to create a new garment. The item can be of the same type (dress to dress) or something entirely different (tablecloth to dress). However, the new item must be distinctly different from the original (for example, embellishments only do not qualify).

At least half of the new item must be made from reconstructed / recycled items (notions such as zippers or interfacing do not count in the total).

Sewing starts on 1st June and ends on 30th June. You can do preparation work (ripping seams, cutting, disassembling, etc.) before the start date.
Make sure to post a 'before' picture together with your entry here. All entries should be posted by July 6th in this thread.

I was excited for this one but my sewing seems to have slowed to an almost stop. I know what I want to make but I wonder if time will allow...

Had a look at the jeans I had thought about using and they are too good to cut up ( not being of a wasting nature) so I'm going to donate them instead  I'm still thinking .

I have sorted out two cardigans which could become a tunic top.  Actually I've had them put aside for several weeks after reading a magazine article about making one new sweater from two old ones.  I'm thinking about hacking a paper pattern crossed with draping over Agetha.

I have had something lurking for a couple of years that needs to be re-fashioned. I bought a pattern and made a toile for the 'new' item but came unstuck when I needed help with fitting. Shortly after it was put away, I fell into the abyss that is the Darkside and haven't done any dressmaking. I know where the bits and pieces are, though, so you never know  ;)

 I might be up for this one, what a scary thought though  :faints: , never done anything like this before. I’m going to be sorting my wardrobe out this coming week to have a throw out as a lot of my clothes don’t fit so i’ll see what i’ve got.

Well 6hrs later and I’ve ended up with this pile of clothes  :faints: to either be recycled by me or to the recycle bin. I’m going to delve in to this pile tomorrow and see what I can put to one side to make another garment or two. I have some ideas

I've started at last!!
A pile of jeans has been sorted ready to be cut up, the pockets for the front have been chosen and I'm about to start embroidering a few designs.
The theme is beer

Note the pockets on the top jeans - those are the ones I have chosen to use.

I think I'd like to join in with this one.
I do have a knit test on the go and about to start some teeny slippers too, test wise(with a long way off finish date), but I'd love to join in and make something. No idea what but it will get me thunkin.

Well I’ve chopped up all my old clothes that i no longer needed and have saved as much of the fabric as possible. Here is a picture of all what’s available to me to use to recycle in to another garment, i might not use all of it and I have an idea what I’m going to try and make, whether it looks any good is another matter.

@realale PR had a denim theme as part of their year Sewing Bee contest if you need some ideas. Some were quite clever while others not so much. Denim Gallery (https://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/ContestGallery.pl?ContestID=368)

@Diane what was this?  I really like the big flowers.

@mudcat  That is a skirt, when it came to chopping it up I couldn’t do it so it’s now been hung back up in the wardrobe in the hope i can lose some weight for it to fit

Thank you @mudcat about PR, I had seen it but had forgotten about it.

I actually do quite a bit of upcycling denim and have done several waistcoats and two hooded coats as well as bags and rugs.  I did see a fantastic reupholstered chair which gave me ideas for the nano second I considered doing one as well!!

I have a pinterest board full of denim ideas (245 pins!!) most of which I will never try but the inspiration is there!!  0_0

 Realale's Refashion and Upcycle Entry

The original source was a pile of old jeans.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
These are either my old jeans or I scrounge them off the pub customers!! The pockets on this one are from our ex barman who gifted me his jeans long after he'd left our employ!  :D
I've made several of these waistcoats as they have become my 'uniform' at the pub. The original waistcoat pattern was Butterick 6714 which is so old I can't even begin to remember where I first got it. The pattern has been adapted and fitted to me so I now just pull out my copy (on some purple wrapping paper!!) and use that.
I use a base fabric of anything fairly light that I can find and cut out the waistcoat in that. Then I embroider some denim and arrange them on the waistcoat base until I find a pleasing arrangement. I attach the denim shapes, sew them down and add contrast topstitching where I think it would enhance it. The lining is just a navy taffeta type fabric that has been hanging around for years.
And the finished item.    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

And this is me wearing it at the pub last night!

Incidentally, White Rabbit Brewery is the name of our brewery and the picture of the white rabbit drinking was drawn by my sister. I fiddled with the drawing in Paint and then put it into my Janome digitizer to make the embroidery. It took me weeks as I'm not a natural digitizer!! I used that embroidery on the waistcoat I made my husband so it was ready to go for this one!  :D

Oh and the red lion is because our pub is called the Red Lion  ;)

Wow Realale you have been busy, what a wonderful waistcoat you now have and so appropriate for what you do.  I love the embroidery and I have also noticed just how neat your stitching is on the back where you have joined the pieces together.

I have gone down a different route from the one originally intended. Spotted a summery dress in colours I love in charity shop window. Viscose, so nice and drapey. And creasy  :[  It was size 6 petite so maybe it would just go round one of my legs!!

Decided to make a sleeveless loose-ish summer shirt so have unpicked everything. Pattern-matching across front and back but not at sides, nowhere near enough fabric. In fact not enough fabric full stop. Quart pattern, pint quantity of fabric. Have now ordered something to go with it, who knows if it will arrive in time? The soonest will be Monday so that gives me 3 days - which should be plenty of time.

OK @Iminei here goes:
I photographed my sister's drawing and saved it to my computer. From there I went into paint and drew round the drawing with a black line and drew everything I wanted again in black. I erased everything I didn't want eg background colour outside the rabbit etc & I then saved the new picture as a jpeg. (This took ages by the way!!)
I opened my Janome digitizer and opted to import image and then followed the on screen instructions to change it into an embroidery. It wasn't an instant process and I think took 3 or 4 goes to get what I wanted, going back to the draw image in paint and changing it as necessary etc.
As I say this doesn't come easy to me and there are probably easier ways to do it but I got it to work for me and that's all that matters!!
Hope that helps  :P

I have a Brother embroidery machine AKA Elvistoo and a Janome Atelier 7 AKA The Splurgess which has a stitch composer !!??!! No idea what that does but it has the capacity

Elvistoo has a digitising element but I think the PES Plus (AKA Lite) needs to be used and as its very lite I dont know if it could but Im definitely Loooooooooving the Rabbit! Bravo!

@Iminei I suspect your stitch composer is like my Pfaff which lets you store a sequence.  So you might do 3 stars, a heart, then 3 stars (or whatever stitches you have) you give it a name and then you can call it up and repeat it whenever you want. Or even a series of letters, like a name.
Ooh! Looked at google.  You can do more. You can save a sequence of individual stitches, in any direction.  Like moving from dot to dot on paper. The limit is your stitch length. Effectively drawing. I think I might want one.

OK. Here we are. Flo's summer shirt.

Dress is viscose fabric which is smooth, cool and drapey but a slippery customer. Loved the colours and patterns.  Spent ages looking for a suitable viscose online to use for the inserts and details.

Bought new pattern for loose shirt as old one very cut up and fiddled with. It has enormous double pleat at the back so I cut back in half and added narrower insert.

Used buttons and b'holes at side of skirt for CF - luckily it was pattern-matched. Back had to be put on upside down to be pattern-matched. Sides - no chance of matching!
Had to unpick numerous rows of shirred smocking as I need the front bodice to cut the yoke out in one piece.

Made little inserts for the pockets to pick up on back insert. Also bound edges to reflect armhole edges. Oh, and I thought it would be more interesting to cut pockets sideways so the pattern went up and down instead of across.

Mick's entry for the competition.

Some pot towels, a table napkin and half a ripped quilt cover.

The pot towels are very heavy duty things, meant for catering and restaurant kitchens. They have a hard life, and when they get shabby and stained enough, they are "retired" by the commercial laundry that looks after them.
Table napkin is from the same source.
The quilt cover should need no explanation.

The other essential part of the project. A rusty, cut-steel sign that I bought from a junk shop years ago.

Soaked the napkin in salt water, layed the sign on top, and left alone for a couple of days to rust.
The salt makes the metal rust faster and also acts as a fixative for the rust to dye the cloth.

The finished item.

The pattern used was a free download for a sweatshirt. It was meant to be sewed from stretch fabric with ribbed cuffs and waistband. So it took quite a bit of hacking about to get it work in the pot-towel woven cotton, and with the quilt cover made into a full lining.
I didn't quite get it right and had to let the quarter zip in to make it a bit easier to get on and off.
(I'm blaming the pattern, ok? Nothing to do with me being a bit of a fat old git, these days.)
Gave the unlined garment a light tea-bag dye to take the whiteness off a bit.
The zip came from an old pair of jeans my daughter was trying to throw away.

That's great @Mick. Great reuse and I like your use of the rusty sign. How come it's not reversed though? Did the rust go all the way through the fabric?

That's great @Mick

....How come it's not reversed though? Did the rust go all the way through the fabric?

No, but the cuts go all the way through the sign.
So by putting it with the "wrong" side down on the fabric, the dyed image comes out the right way round.

Yeah, I know, and it took me two goes to get it right. Good job I had a few spare napkins...

Hiya everyone, I'm currently packing my house up to go into storage on 20th July - just over a week!!!!

I've already lost my home office (desk/second screen etc) so the prep for the voting is really difficult as it involves lots of copying and pasting which is easier with two screens.

So if you're all OK with it, I'll delay the voting a bit until I've landed at OH's flat (22nd July). There's a desk/screen there.

We don't know when we'll get to our new place probably September sometime.
I will have a sewing room again once we get to the new house, but didn't take enough measurements (it has wall lights) to work out where the furniture will go, so that'll be a project for later.
I'm trying to add in a futon (from the flat) so it can double as a guest space if needed, and it'll be nice to have a sofa to sit on for hand sewing, pattern browsing and etc.

You are doing a fab job @SewRuthieSews - even to think about that when you're in the middle of moving is nothing short of miraculous!! I moved 4 months ago and it's only very recently I feel I've been able to come up for air  ;)

Hope it all goes very smoothly.

You have enough to do without worrying about this! Moving is one of the most stressful things to do so you don't need to fret about this on top of everything else. In my opinion you can delay the voting as long as you need to - it's not as if it's time critical  :P
Hope all goes well with the packing/storage/move/buying etc
