Title: Awesome Accessories Competition - July and August 2021
Post by: SewRuthieSews on June 22, 2021, 17:31:26 PM
Welcome to TSP's Awesome Accessories competition

1st July - 31st August 2021

The aim of this contest is to create an awesome accessory, ie not a garment

Rules:
Create an accessory which can worn/carried by a human, pet or doll.
This could be a bag, scarf, jewellery, belt, wallet etc
The items should be handcrafted, this can be by sewing, but can also be knitting, crochet, weaving, leather work, beading and other creative media.

Label your submission clearly as an entry, and number if you have more than one entry.

Sewing starts on 1st July and ends on 31st August. All entries should be posted by September 6th in this thread.

Let the sewing begin!

I'm packing up my house contents to go into storage as the house sale and purchase don't line up, so will be watching but not participating.

I've just re-read the rules and see that knitting is acceptable so I might be able to enter my scarf if I finish it. :)

Sorry, I'm struggling to do anything in the heat.

Sorry, I'm struggling to do anything in the heat.

What Bodge said. I realized I'm running out of July and I haven't even gotten my pattern drafted and tested yet. I was going to amaze you with a hand saddle stitched leather tote bag with copper rivets where the handles attached.

Instead I have a very large box in my office with half a cowhide in it.  :S It was on sale of course.

July is usually my busiest month so haven’t had time to do much sewing - so despite always having a bag on the go I only did a small clutch this month for my sisters hen party last week. I have just started a purse for my first ever paying customer as well (eek!)  However, I can’t not enter an accessories contest when that is my ‘thing’ haha!

All fabric is Tula Pink and I used a scrap of pewter PU I had. It meant I had to make an extra join in the wrist strap but I think it came out ok.

Pattern is the Harlequin pouch which I hacked to add card slots to.

Is there any chance we could have an extension on this competition as July was so hot, I have something I am doing but it isn’t finished.

I've never entered a competition before so hadn't thought about it.  However, just about 10 days ago I made two bags, one for my DS the other for his partner.

If it's OK to enter two I'll do the second on a separate post.

I made this washbag for my DS who loves cars and who's initials are MG so the fabric was just perfect for him.  It's lined with PUL so is waterproof too.
The pattern is a free one from Plush Addicts and I've now made 6 of these.

edited to reduce photo size, sorry.

Just read the rules properly.  This can't be worn so maybe can't be entered.

Second bag made for DS partner.
Pattern was a Spencer Ogg which I tweaked, removing the strap and adding a mag lock to close and also adding a chain so it can be used as a small bag.
I had to add an embelishment to the front as I, idiot that I can be, put the mag lock on the wrong side at first  :headbang: I think I got away with it though!

it has card slots and zipped pocket inside but I forgot to take photos.
It looks a bit crushed on the front as it had to be posted but it will iron out.

@Iminei yes, it was a charm from an advent calendar which just fit over the offending holes.  I had trouble getting it to stick onto the leather at first but Copydex manged it.

Here is a handbag I sewed. (Finished about 2 weeks ago) Made of quilting cotton, cotton canvas & nylon webbing for the strap.  There is one pocket out side & two inside, All snaps are Kam magnetic snaps.
I am entering this into the competition.

Ooh, I didn't know Kam did magnetic snaps.  I'll have to investigate as they could be very useful.
Where do you get yours from please @Sara-S

@Kitten I order directly from Kam. They are available on the US website, which does ship overseas. I am not sure where to order them in the UK.

Wild Atlantic Way’s 1st Entry

I designed and made this simple sun visor pouch for a friend. I wanted to make him something useful in return for doing me a favour a couple of weeks ago and as he’s a big burly farmer, man bags are definitely OUT.

Charley's entry.

A felt hat, 2 views, side and front. For a female or male.
I made this 2 weeks ago.

Edited to add this detail:
There is no pattern, other than around the head measurement, and how tall I want the hat to be. When I have these numbers there is a little math, and then draw a shape on some plastic, or my preference, on a piece of laminate underlay.
The hat is made with merino wool, water and soap, with the tail end of a scarf tassels felted into the tip, the tassels suffered a little, but look ok. It took 3 days in total, 1 day to make and shape, 2 days to be totally dry.

Thank you @WildAtlanticWay and @Lilian
I attended a felt making group that was run by our local council over the last 2 years, the course was free of charge, and used to take place on Thursday mornings during term time. I found out about the course through a friend.
I had not made felt before then, but I was instantly hooked. I just love it, and I am slowly learning and gaining skill.

The course was funded mostly by the EU, and partly by adult education, but funding has now ceased because of ......, and the course is no longer run, since early this year.
Now, I make use of books, online tutorials/blogs and learn that way.

Lovely, @charley .  The photos appeared in your post so that's perfect!  It would be great if you could give a little bit of information in the style of the template on p.1. You can add it into your post with the pics then they can appear as one into the voting thread when it goes up.

Here is your nearly last call for Awesome Accessories.
If you made something and haven't got around to posting your creation, please do so by Tuesday 28th at the latest.  I will then have a couple of days to figure out how to do the voting thingy - probably phoning Imi in the dead of night because I've forgotten how it works - before hosting the vote on 1st October  ;)

I thought  might as well enter King Kong and Godzilla as they meet the criteria of being carried

So... after the arrival of Madge the Pfaff, GS1 was having a look around my sewing area in his bedroom and got very interested.  He was asking lots of questions about the process etc (he is like that, a bit of a geek lol ).  He then noticed the fur fabric and idly commented that it would make a wonderful King Kong.  Then noticed the blue and said that would make Godzilla.  I then, against my better judgement, told him I would have a go.  Both pieces were just laying around in my stash left over from making panto costumes but probably came from Immanuel's or donated by someone.
The process included sending him details of what I was doing, patterns made up etc.
The King Kong was adapted from a basic teddy bear, just changed the head shape a bit.  Then Godzilla was a T Rex, arms lengthened and spikes down the back.  Both were free online patterns.
When they were finished GS1 took a very good look, announced they were lovely, cuddled for five minutes then gave them to his little brother to take home  :D
Then told me he wanted a mechagodzilla, which I have yet to begin!

My Swoon Patterns Bonnie Bag with a cross body strap.
It has additional pockets inside for my phone and a small short depth pocket for my car keys so they don’t get lost in the bottom of the bag. I used an old denim skirt and the print fabric is a velvet curtain off cut. The purple is a faux leather fabric. When I made the strap I decided to play with some multi coloured purple polyester thread. I did want to put some zig zag stitches on the strap for decoration, but I couldn’t get it to work. It kept missing stitches. I tried using my walking foot and a leather needle, but still no joy.

I'm here, just in time  :)

My entry is my leather wallet.  This is the second time I've sewn anything leather, and the first time I've ever made anything like this wallet.
The embroidery design was from Etsy, and stitched by my faithful Brother Innovis V3.
It's an "in the hoop" design, so you make the whole thing by sewing a bit on the machine, then adding another bit, then another, etc.  It's a fascinating process, and another first for me.  The trickiest bit was sewing in the dividers and purse section to the concertina sides.  It said to hand sew, but I would never have got a needle through it, so I did it on the ordinary sewing machine, fairly successfully I think.
