For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Overlocker wanted
« on: March 10, 2024, 12:04:35 PM »
I'm looking for an overlocker for one of my (adult) DDs. She sews a lot and is looking for something reliable but without the investment of brand new. She lives in Merseyside and I'm in Cumbria but we're happy to travel for pick up.  If anybody has an overlocker or knows of somebody who has one that they no longer need we would be interested. I've advised her to avoid Singer, Lidl and the like. Thank you.

Patterns Discussion / Cousette patterns
« on: July 16, 2023, 15:57:47 PM »
Has anybody used any of these patterns?  I've got this in my basket but I just can't find any reviews for the patterns.  Have looked at PR - not listed on there and I've had a trawl of the internet.  Thank you.

Patterns Discussion / PDF Patterns
« on: October 28, 2022, 17:24:27 PM »
I've just had an email for the Closet Core Nicks dress & blouse and the Mitchell trousers.  The dress is not my thing but I do like the trousers: looking at the site I think they've maybe been around for a while but no problem as I like them.  However, £14.25 for a PDF pattern seems a bit steep.  I know that tissue patterns seem to be ever increasing in price but £14.25 for a PDF? (which I'll then have to pay more for to get printed cos life's too short for sellotape) Am I out of touch?
Hmmm, probably :(

Can anybody suggest a source for this type of fastening, please?  it measures 12mm in diameter is black/chocolate brownish and is for a coat belonging to DD2.  We've both had a trawl  around the internet to no avail. Thank you :)

Vintage Machines / 221/222k cleanup
« on: November 15, 2020, 11:52:21 AM »
I'm in the process of cleaning up the 222k that I bought recently.  I would like to keep the original electrical cable and am trying to source some original style replacement strain reliefs for the foot pedal and plug ends of the cable.  I'd also like to get new ones for the 221k as well.  Does anybody know where I can get some please?

Vintage Machines / Singer 222k Find
« on: October 26, 2020, 14:14:29 PM »
DH spotted this on a recent visit to an Architectural Salvage and Antiques centre which was located off the beaten track and this was really the only decent item there. It was manufactured in November 1957.  The machine is mainly dusty/cobwebby and the lubricant is pretty well gunked up  It does run and DH will make sure it is electrically safe.  It's currently being dismantled for cleaning and lubricating.  It has the red accessory case with various feet, including the embroidery/darning hoop. Also the machine storage case.  I paid £40 for everything.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / An overlocker lesson learnt
« on: January 10, 2020, 13:55:11 PM »
I've had my Janome 6234XL for about 5 years and have made sure not to sew over any pins..until yesterday :(.  I really don't know who could have hidden it between the fabric layers but everything stopped and not realising a pin was in the way I tried to coax the machine along.  No luck and said pin found and removed. I checked everything over on the machine, changed the needles and continued to sew.  Everything looked good on the front of the overlocking but there was clearly an issue with some loose threads on the reverse. I then unthreaded, rethreaded and tried again.  Still not right.  Obviously I'd done some damage somewhere :'(
I walked away and made dinner while I thought about it.
One of the benefits of being married to an engineer is that I can take things apart and troubleshoot them..HA! SMUG ME!  As DH is away until tomorrow I had another look after we ate and decided I'd possibly bent the upper looper. So I spent yesterday evening looking for a replacement part which quickly progressed to looking at new overlockers  0_0. Since I know I make questionable decisions late at night I thought I'd better sleep on my 'research'. I also thought that DH will sort it out for me when he gets back (or render it uneconomically repairable and suggest I buy a new overlocker :ninja:
This morning I decided to clean and oil the overlocker before I ask him to have a look.  I rethreaded in different colours so that I could examine the stitch more thoroughly and discovered that in fact the right hand needle thread was at fault.
Hmmm..checked the threading and noticed that the tension dial was way off.  Bottom line:  machine works perfectly and is lovely and clean and I'm happy!  Just not so smug anymore :S

In the wardrobe / Sway back adjustment
« on: July 29, 2017, 19:39:23 PM »
Can someone suggest a good tutorial for a sway back adjustment, please?  My daughter appears to need one and we've had a root around online but there seems to be various methods.  I would like it to be fairly straightforward (don't want to put her off) and just assumed taking a wedge out of the back would work.  Would it?  Thank you
