In the wardrobe / Re: Great source for sashiko quilted fabric
« on: April 15, 2019, 14:42:38 PM »
Pearl, the bedjacket was the one that caught my eye.
I need a big kick up the rear - I bought a Sashiko machine almost two years ago and have made nothing on it - I eventually figured out how to thread it months after ignoring the demo (ha, I know everything!). I went to find some heavy linen in my stash today to make placemats on it - and guess what- it has vanished. What a wuzz.

Pearl, I was thinking more of their Kantha jackets.

Oxfam shops are selling cotton sashiko quilts for approx £40, that would make up into similar coats as sold on Toast for many times more.

Janet, that sounds awful. Lucky you had the foresight to test it.
You need to keep removing the excess dye- you could put it in a bowl in the bath and run a thin stream of water on it. Or, if your washing machine has a rinse only cycle, use that til it squeezes clear water.

Check out the video clip on their website- the designer is wearing this dress.

I don't want any stiffness.

I have a sashiko machine and want to stitch down patches against a background cloth (like Wabi Sabi). Is there something that will hold them in place that I can remove later?  (Not pins or safety pins, something I can stitch over).

Hi Annieeg, yes, I wash most fabric first, to prevent nasty surprises later.

Measuring then fitting it to him is going to be very important. Try it first, as suggested, in a cheap stiffish fabric. There is another thread (?) here that describes the journey in detail.

I bought some for 3.99 on Wed. I dunked them in hottish soapy water- there was no shrinkage, or loss of colour or texture.

Try WH Smith- in most main railway stations.

I have a copy and love it (not just for fitting info)- but I have to say that no fitting book is comprehensive, especially this one.

Still losing weight rings alarm bells- you will only have a good fit when you reach your target weight.
Myself, I would send back the bought dresses and start again.
As others have said, it costs (a lot) to remodel.
Good luck!
