Title: Look what I did with my scraps! (garment, accessories, quilts) competition
Post by: Manuela on May 06, 2018, 03:02:13 AM
According to the original vote, this is the next competition:

:vintage: Look what I did with my scraps!  :vintage:

This can be anything from garments, soft furnishings, accessories to quilts - be creative. Dark siders are very welcome  :drink:

And, of course there are a few rules:

1. Please post a picture of you pile (or piles ) of scraps before you start and/or include it in your submission post
2. You can have more than one entry, just submit them in separate posts
3. Sewing starts on May 11th and ends on June 10th - you can plan and prepare before the starting date
4. Please put your submission post with pictures up here by June 15th

Feel free to ask any questions you may have, I'll put the answers up in this post, so they're all at the same place and you don't need to search the whole thread.

Sources tell me that some of you are basically drowning in scraps :fabric: so let's do something about it  :snip:

Question No 1:
How big/small constitutes scrap?
1. It should be leftover from previous project(s)
2. Each piece must be half a fat quarter or less (a fat quarter measuring 18" x 22" or 46cm x 56cm) for piece and quilt or less than a whole fat quarter for garments.

Question No 2:
If you’ve got several scraps of the same fabric, each of which is less than the given size, can you use them all in a project or only one of them?
You can use them all, but please post pictures of them here.

You are evil Manuela. Very evil.

You know some of us have scrap collections sorted by size. Or so I've heard....not me of course. cough.

Hmm, will have to go and measure my scraps, I think my idea of scraps is a lot bigger than yours!  I only keep them if they are a useful size , but not enough for a whole garment.

I'm open for negotiations when it comes to scrappy scraps leftover from garment making. post a picture with a ruler next to it and we'll see  :)

When (and indeed if!) I get round to it, I'll post for you to judge.

P&Q scraps can be quite tiny, perhaps only 4" x 4" but garment making scraps are much bigger.

I just took that into consideration.
Less than half a fat quarter for P&Q and less than a whole fat quarter for garments.
When in doubt, please post pictures with a ruler next to it  :)

I was looking forward to this but i don't quilt and any scrap less than a fat quarter tend to go into the charity bag for shredding. All my scraps left over from other projects tend to be at least 1/2 metre due to the fact you often have to buy fabric in full metres when you need less. So i will have to pass up on this.

I think I'm the same, anything less than 1/2 a yard doesn't get kept - but I've not had chance to look yet.

Haha, the rules keep me out.  Anything gets saved and pieces made from 4X7 pieces are good to go for blocks.

I hand sew economy quilts.  With any and all sundry scraps left over.

A scrap competition, what a wonderful idea!!!!  0_0
What a shame that there is really no time left for sewing atm.  :P
But I have started to work with my scraps about 3 weeks ago, I would like to make a "sales check" or "receipt" quilt. But it won't get finished in 4 weeks  ;)

Lots of food for thought there.

The African print dress would need about 150 x 6"x6" squares.  I might have enough stash fabric scraps but probably not in colours and patterns that would blend together successfully :S

4. Please put your submission post with pictures up here by June 15th

Those are the same dates as for the Floral competition.  Are they running concurrently? or have you done my usual trick of copy and pasting without making the intended changes?

Would it be permissible to use the scraps for foundation piecing onto a large piece of support fabric?

I keep meaning to make my own Kantha Quilt from purple quilting cotton scraps but given that I need new bathing suits,  sleeveless tops and dresses rather badly and will have no need for a jacket until December I will probably have to pass on this for now.

But maybe this will give some quilters an idea.  :meow:

You couldn't buy the fabric for £37.50, indeed it would be difficult to find it for £75.

I think I could get the fabric for that, and we'd be using scraps for most of it anyway, right? But it would take me so long to do the work!

I have a couple of several ideas, more by the day.  ;) They vary in complexity and time commitment. I might try to do the fastest one first so at least I have something. Most online competitions elsewhere have too short a time frame for me and I don't want to stress myself out having fun.

Here are my scraps
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I'm going to make Simplicity 2449 (https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/36157) view D, or something that might resemble it :S

There are some FQs in there but nothing bigger and some bits are quite small.
There's a mix of new FQs, left over cotton dressmaking fabrics and some pieces bought from the stash left by one of the ladies at craft club.  They are mostly the ones with the bigger patterns and multiple colours which I normally find difficult to use for regular patchwork.  I might ditch one or two of them and I might find another few bits and pieces.  It will be one of those 'see how it goes' projects.

I've traced out the pattern to have the whole of the front and back, not just half to go on a fold, and I am thinking about whether to do foundaton piecing or to join strips with the overlocker.

In a blinding flash of inspiration, I suddenly decided to play around with this....just for the fun of it.  :P

The pattern dates from 1966 and I'm making the checked suit with a sleeveless blouse. I've had the red check fabric lying around for years and the cream fabric is some Egyptian cotton scraps.

Pattern suitable for Sindy dolls....no such dolls are in this house any more, so I have my mini-mannequin to model for me.

The back of the blouse is finished off with buttons. Didn't bother with any snaps because it slides over my armless mannequin easily without the faff and bother.

Picture shows the (slightly boring) front of the blouse paired with a charming A-line skirt trimmed with ric-rac braid.

And finally...the jacket is also trimmed with ric-rac braid to match the hem of the skirt. This has a press-stud fastener at the top.

Well, here are the photos!  I am still wearing that creation though I'm not sure if it will ever go much further than the garden!  though I might wear it to craft club for a laugh.  0_0

It's foundation pieced - and the backing fabric was way bigger than a fat quarter, but it was a scrap; taken from a large duvet back.  DD who makes curtains and soft furnishings gave me three of them.  She presumably had a job which needed the fronts to match someone's bedding.  I took out the two lightest colours from the original pile of scraps, but there are still about 50 different fabrics in there.  Because it's double throughout it is quite a substantial fabric.

I used Simplicity 2449.  In theory the bias cut folded yoke should have been enough to hold the skirt up, but I know from experience with a similar yoke in stretchy trousers that doesn't work, and anyway the piecing stopped any bias stretch, so I included an elastic waistband.

I would quite like to make a tee shirt from multiple fabrics but suspect that garment pieces wouldn't meet the size guidelines. I have saved a bunch of scraps from the things I sewed which were brown based fabrics.

This is - obviously - not an entry, but I had an overwhelming feeling that our very own TSP bear, made by Vegegrow from the tiniest of scraps (provided, if memory serves me correctly, by Iminei) ought to be present on this thread.

Vegegrow certainly deserves an honourable mention.  She would have been a force to be reckoned with in this competition!
