Can we have an active @member name in replies, for example '@Ravingdoll: what did Muv say?' It's used in other fora I visit and I find it a handy shortcut where I don't want to quote, but am addressing a specific person.

I am sure that would be useful for those who understand it, but could it be optional please?
-
This does exist as a free feature. It sends an email to the member in particular. It wouldn't be option though.
-
I think that would be quite a good feature, especially if someone was replying a bit later and the recipient might not have revisited the thread. Regardless of whether it's Words According to Muv or otherwise!! :D

Sorry Fran, I don't understand your response. Can you expand?
-
@uttaretch just trying lol
-
I think it would be good to have the option about whether emails are received. I've stopped emails from many different sources, including most of Facebook's because I was overrun with email.
It would be a handy feature to have to use the @ to get someone's attention but I think it would be nice to have the option about the emails. Maybe there's a space in the menu bar above that could signal when someone writes, similar to private messages.
-
@Francesca: just reread your response and see what you mean. Is it something that you would not be prepared to consider?
-
Hi UR,
I think what Fran is saying is that it can be turned on, but once on every time some uses @memberName it would complete the action (receivers settings allowing) there wouldn’t be an option for the action not to happen.
Does that help, I’m sure Fran will correct me in a few.

If we still have some control via our own settings, then it would be ok.

It's a feature we could implement which will send an email to the person who is mentioned. However, it may not be optional as requested. If someone mentioned you, you'd might get an email. Of course you could choose to ignore it. I need to research further.
There might not be settings to adjust on an individual member level. So we would only implement it if the majority wanted it and those who don't wish to be notified might just have to ignore the email.
Modifications like this are likely something we would put to subscriber vote.
-
Thanks, Fran. If this feature is to be put to a vote, members have to be aware of how it works and whether or not notification can be switched off.
I am a member of a forum where I have switched off private messaging but when anyone mentions me, notification appears in a 'sidebar'. Don't know how much fiddling would need to be done behind the scenes to make this possible.
edited to update.

This mod has now been implemented, but might need some testing.
I've mentioned a few users but am not seeing the mentions listed, so we shall see...
If you want to view your mentions, please go to Profile > Account Settings > Mentions, there you will find a list, and also a tickbox allowing you to unsubscribe from the mention emails.
However at present, I'm not seeing any mentions in my name so it might not be working.
-
@Francesca - Can you see this in your mentions now?
-
Nope :( Just me then 0_0
-
Elephun, when you typed that in, did you then select the username that popped up? I think you need to click that. If it works then your post should link to my profile :)
-
@Francesca: the auto-complete pop-up is not working yet.
-
Thank you!
-
@Francesca: the auto-complete pop-up is not working yet.
It works for me. Can you send your system specs?
It looks like this:
@UttaRetch
-
@francesca still no pop up for me either
@Utta nope nothing there either
It clearly only likes some people!
-
It might be based on your system specs.
-
@Francesca - I typed your name in. I didn't see any usernames pop up. I'm on a Mac using Chrome, if that matters. This will be an interesting, good feature 0_0
-
@Francesca: I am on Mac 10.6.8 using firefox 48.0.2 and cannot upgrade from either.
-
To confirm, you MUST be able to see the pop-up with the name suggestion for the mention mod to work. If you don't see this, the member will not be pinged. You can identify whether it has worked when you publish your post. If the username is not in bold and doesn't link to the member profile, they won't have been pinged.
Next up is to figure out why you guys are not seeing that pop-up.
When you type slowly, just @fran for example, does nothing show at all?
@Francesca: I am on Mac 10.6.8 using firefox 48.0.2 and cannot upgrade from either.
It's possible that this is the issue as that Firefox is out of date by some years, but it might be something else so I will continue to try.
-
I'm not sure if I can help here.. @Fran nothing appeared
-
Ah this is so annoying that some people see it and some don't!
The important point is to not put a space. Just type @ then a few letters slowly and you should see a box show up to predict the username.
I will continue investigating.
-
@Fran nothing doing here either.
Jessie
-
Very weird, it seems like only admins are able to do it. So far Im and Acorn have successfully done it but no one else.
-
@Acorn is earning her keep already and has discovered some settings that I hadn't configured correctly. Can you lovely people give it a go?
-
@Fran nothing yet...
Jessie
-
Try now? I think we fixed it for regular members but forgot Subscribers.
-
@Francesca
All good!
Jessie
-
@b15erk: testing, testing, 1, 2, 3. :D
-
All 'A' OK @UttaRetch !! :D :D :D

Okay, the pop-up is fixed, but are we actually supposed to get an email notification too?
-
I got one! :*
Jessie
-
If you go to Profile > Mentions you will note a little tickbox that says receive email notifications, you can choose to turn that on or off.
-
Mine is ticked, so it's probably something at my end. Nevermind, the feature works as intended and as I am here most days so won't miss much. :)
Whilst I was tinkering about in settings, I discovered that I can unsubscribe from areas of no interest to me. :D
-
Can I play I'll test @UttaRetch and see if she gets an email
-
It's worth checking your email spam folder if you haven't already - although it seems that some email providers block the sort of emails that are sent by forums before they even get that far. :fish: :fish: :fish:
-
Yeah, email is problematic. I get them fine, but others might not. It's tough for us to sort out because it's more likely to be your email provider thinking we're a spam email than not.
Also, they can take a while to come. They are sent out in batches so as not to overwhelm our server so you might end up getting them a few minutes later. Usually not noticeable but if you're browsing the forum at the time you might see the [] in your Profile before the email arrives.
-
Just checked my spam filter, but in any case I always received notification for private messages. As I said, I am pleased that it's working as intended and accept that I am in the dark ages so far as computing is concerned whilst I remain on Osx 10.6.8. 0_0

IT'S WORKING!
