Fun with Fabric / Working with leather
« on: March 12, 2024, 12:05:00 PM »
I'm not experienced when it come to working with leather but I do have some scraps, one hide and a good sized piece. I also have a 1980s black jacket I'm going to repurpose.

The piece of leather is too stiff and thick for me to sew with my sewing machine, so I thought it could be good cut up into table mats. It's a dark red with a texture embossed into it.

Other than a sharp craft knife and a ruler are there any other tools I need? Do I need to do anything with the edges? Would it look better with some sort of banding marked as a border?

March/April - Something for the Home
May/June - Use the stash
July/August - Paris/Olympics
Sep/Oct - UFO

Apologies for the delay in sharing this list, a sudden death in the family rather messed up my head in January.
As you know the wonderful @Flobear stepped into the breach and has been hosting the Warm and Cosy contest which I've enjoyed very much. Thankyou Flo, you are the best!

Official Sewalongs for 2024

We've carried on the Weekly Sewing Clubs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 2-4pm for those who wanted a sewing club to attend but don't have one locally. Please do come and join in with those if you would like.

New this year is The Official Scrap Quilt Sewalong 2024, for anyone who has scraps of quilting fabrics left over from other projects and 2024 Jeans Sew Along for those wanting to make jeans.
Other Sewalongs may be started during the year where there seems to be popular demand.

Thanks to everyone who joins in with the contests and sewalongs!

For my scrap quilt I need to cut 48 lots of 6 1/2 inch squares.

My ruler is 6 inches by 24 inches, and I have an inch gridded cutting board  (23 x 35).
I'm comfortable cutting things up to 6 inches but am a bit stuck on the 6 1/2 inches. Any tips?

The Coda Quilted Coat is the five dollar pattern today (can use code 10TKS for an additional 10% off sale price)
This is a great transitional pattern for quilters who want to dip their toes into garment sewing OR for garment sewists who want to try out quilting.
This pattern comes in sizes XS-5X and includes an optional full bust piece. The  Coda Quilted Coat is meant for woven fabrics that are pre-quilted or for quilters cotton.

What are good ways to make quilts from scraps? I'd love to hear your ideas. We can then use that as a resource for the

Sewalongs and Competitions / The Official Scrap Quilt Sewalong 2024
« on: February 14, 2024, 08:22:09 AM »
As there seemed enough interest, we are going to have an Official Scrap Quilt Sew Along.

I'm more of a lightsider (clothing sewist), so I'm going to need help from the experienced darksiders (quilters) when questions arise.

As its a Sew Along there are fewer constraints than a contest, but there are some guidelines so here goes
- sew a quilt of any size using mostly scraps from your own stash (or perhaps from a friend)
- there is no specific timeline but aim to complete within 2024
- use any style or pattern that appeals to you, so crazy quilts, repeated blocks, multi colour etc are all OK

If you need scraps in a particular colourway you may ask if another TSPer has scraps they wish to donate. Compensation for P&P only please. Arrange via PM.

Let the sorting of fabric scraps commence!

Fun with Fabric / Ideas of what to sew with this stretchy sheer fabric
« on: February 13, 2024, 12:24:36 PM »
Hi folks, I have 3 metres of this semi sheer mesh stretch fabric with a bright print. As its a bit sheer whatever I make would need at least a partial lining.
I've had it in stash for several years and always put it back because I'm not quite sure what to do with it.

Option 1 - a dress, not that I wear them much
Option 2 - a poloneck top and sheer cardiwrap thingy - more the sort of thing I actually wear

In the wardrobe / Which Butttons?
« on: December 21, 2023, 10:01:14 AM »
I've been making this shirt for myself out of different Christmas themed cotton prints.
Buttonholes are next but I can't quite decide which buttons to go for between the green and the gold (not red as not enough of a suitable size/colour).

Here's the shirt

Button options

Gold, striped dome, flat and mini knots

Green with shine or matt (dont think this second one works).

Small dark green two hole or green pearlescent.
