Title: 10 20 30 minutes to sew
Post by: SewRuthieSews on December 20, 2017, 21:25:05 PM
"10-20-30 minutes to sew" was a book by the late Nancy Zieman (she sadly died last month).
I own the book and its a great way to split down more complex sewing tasks into smaller chunks and work away on projects even when you don't have big stretches of time.
I like to think of it as a challenge to get into the sewing room every day if I can and whilst I am not always working on big things, its also a good way to deal with mending and hemming curtains etc.

Today I am in the sewing room shortening curtains which hang over the radiator.

I've turned an Ikea fleece blanket into hats.

Probably ought to go back to the things I was working on before I did all my Christmas sewing. I had a fleece jacket partially made, and some trousers partially made, and a few things which need mending etc. I keep getting new ideas though of things I want to do.

Finished my skirt :)
Cut out two tops yesterday, although that was more like 120-240-480 as the are slippery viscose.

a really good idea to turn ikea fleeces into hats!

Atm I am working on a LogCabin Quit, which I continue in many small "bits" in 10 or 15 min units. That's great and I love it.

I made 12 hats altogether (though I think only 9 are in that picture), and all from a single Ikea Skogsklocka blanket which costs £4.50. I think that's pretty good for a piece of nice quality fleece 130cm x 170cm.
These are a special request made for a colleague of DBF's who organises things for the cubs and scouts, I think maybe for the leaders/helpers as I only made adult and teen sizes, none for young kids. Not sure as I just got the summary which was about what was required and not why.
It does get boring making lots in the same colour though I did it assembly line style, and measured and pinned the brims whilst watching TV.

The pattern I used is the free one from Fleece Fun. Here's the link

Today I am going to make a pattern from a favourite RTW cardigan so I can make simple cardigan jackets. I'll keep any I like for me, but also make up some of my fabrics which are less good colours into stuff for the May Day charity stall I do.
It has an open front, dropped shoulder and long band at the neck so is pretty easy to sew. I find the dropped shoulder is quite forgiving and means the same cardigan seems to 'fit' OK on a variety of figues and sizes.
I'll make them all approximately me sized, and the smaller ladies can wrap the fronts, the larger ladies wear them open.

Finished sewing the ends in a knitted cardie - now in the wash as this is my third attempt at knitting the yarn. Glad its used up :)
Sewn the lining into a makeup bag - the last of the Christmas sewing - hurrah!
About to sew the sleeve seams of the top I want to wear tomorrow.

I made a throw into a cardigan using my new pattern.

I think it came out OK.

I think if the fit is Ok this one is for me. I'm currently obsessed with teal and turquoise and planning some more pieces.

Looks great Ruthie did the front bands go on easily that’s the bit that makes or breaks this sort of pattern? What sort of fabrics are you going to use next

The front bands are cut on in this version (its the edge of the fabric which was nicely finished).

I'm sticking with turquoise and currently making a top and skirt. The fabric is a very tough knit and neither the overlocker nor the coverhem like it, so having to do it all on the normal sewing machine. So have to see what they come out like as currently a lot of wavyness going on.

I might make another top for myself in a different fabric I think will work better!
