Technical Help / Re: Patterned fabric
« on: July 10, 2020, 17:51:49 PM »
If lack of pattern matching and broken patterns bothers you I would find a pattern with fewer darts and keep this pattern for plains, small prints or geometrics.

I have the morplan pattern master, a cheap set if French curves and the dressmakers ruler.  I can't remember the last time I used the ruler. However the pattern master i use quite a bit, and the French curves every time I draft something.

Cost of the materials and three hours of your time at minimum wage.

If you do it for any less then make her promise not to tell anyone what you charged or else you will have other people wanting a bespoke item at knock down rates.

You could offer her one in lieu of her next birthday or Christmas present.

Fun with Fabric / Re: What to match with this?

Or black???

Yeah ... I know, I'll slink back to the Darkside ....

I would do black too. For the non-black choice I would do ivory, rather than grey.

I think it looks perfect as it is.  But! for a dressy dress I would show a little more flesh somewhere, probably at the neckline then you could wear a nice necklace with it.

But, if you are happy with it as it is leave it as it is.

Embroidery Machines / Re: PE150 needle not hitting fabric
« on: February 06, 2020, 17:41:04 PM »
Different designs. Different thread both top and bottom.
Doesn't do a basting stitch.
Multiple swearwords and various threats.

It's an old machine that I got second hand years ago. It's not had much use, but I had was going to make some lace bats and butterflies to add to an evening dress.

As it's had so little use I couldn't justify buying a new one, but it was nice to be able to make the odd decorated bag etc.

Sigh.

Hi,

No way of turning off the sensors that I can see.

Having googled grub screws ...  no idea as I can't see any even using a magnifying glass.   It then I don't have a grub screwdriver either.

Have been playing around. If I move the needle manually by using the wheel it goes up and down. If I use the electronics to see a pattern the needle doesn't move, it does the first stitch then stays at its highest position.

Crying doesn't seem to help.

Thank you for doing all this hard work. We probably don't know half of what you do behind the scenes, but I for one am jolly grateful.

I have been watching it on slow speed and when seeing a pattern the needle isn't going up and down.  Nor does the needle move when using the hand wheel.

But if I switch it off and use the handwheel the needle does go up and down.

Yes I have and the circular washer seems to be firmly in place.
I've got really quick at unscrewing the throat plate!

Embroidery Machines / PE150 needle not hitting fabric
« on: February 04, 2020, 21:48:42 PM »
I've got an old Brother PE150, that I've not used much over the years (bought it second hand from someone in the village).  It was working beautifully yesterday.

Then I got a message to check that the upper and lower thread had not been cut.  They hadn't.  But I can't get it to work.

I've cleaned everything; no real fluff or anything and I've tried running bias binding through the tension mechanism. I've changed the needle.  I've changed upper and lower thread.  I've changed the needle again .... I've tried re-hooping with different fabric.

It's really odd; it just seems as if the needle is hitting the fabric and not going any deeper.  But when I checked it without the hoop in the needle seemed to be going right down into the bobbin holder thingie.

I'm at a loss.

Help anyone?

I suggest that a blouse is a (feminine) type of shirt and that a shirt is an upper body garment with a buttoned opening at the front, sleeves which are stitched on, not cut as one piece with the body and a collar, or at least a collar stand.

I would add, made from a woven, rather than a stretch fabric.

Machine Accessories / Re: Madam Sew presser foot set

I have done applique with a normal foot.

The health and safety police will shudder, but when I was at school we did free machine embroidery with no foot at all!

Yay! You managed to post GG!

Yep!  Have no idea what I have been doing differently to make it work, and poor Acorn has been very patient with me!  Thank you @Acorn .

Goth Gardener's entry 2

Pattern; self-drafted.  Top taken from a TnT pattern, but changed to dropped shoulders, neckline lowered and made a bit bigger (as previous entry was a bit tight). Skirt was a self-drafted handkerchief skirt.

Fabric, another one from funki fabrics.

As I had 1.25m of this for some reason I decided to make a dress, as most of my dresses are a bit work-formal, and I want some more casual ones.

This needed a lot of amendments.  I made the top too big - hence the pleats at the waist.  I decided that I didn't need to pattern match as so many rtw dresses don't - and I'm not happy about the lack of matching.  I'd forgotten that handkerchief skirts show the wrong side of the fabric; so I did a deep hem.  It was too short, so I added another "handkerchief" of a thick black mesh - this is the "shadow" you can see on the right-hand side and at the front.

I'm not unhappy with it when compared to a rtw frock in the kind of shop that would sell such a style, but it's really not up to my usual standard.
