Vilene do a very lightweight interfacing, which you can get through Empress Mills, who I can recommend.

I'd make a long-sleeved t-shirt type top and wear a camisole underneath.

I wonder if some of the seam tape used on waterproof coats would help to hold it together?

Or failing that some light weight iron-on interfacing.

QAYG doesn't have to have sashing, lumpy bits where the blocks join or hand joining on the back.  I can't now find the video where I learned the strip technique, but this quilt was QAYG.

I asked a few years ago about QAYG (quilt still not done!) and @BrendaP this was your reply:

Three ways of QAYG without sashing.

This method has you join the backing by hand.

https://www.stitchedincolor.com/blog//2016/08/how-to-assemble-finish-quilt-as-you-go.html
This method has seams in the wadding which could lead to bulky joins, though she insists not!

is the way I did my wedding pressie quilt which has FMQ squiggles all over it.

As I said at the time the video really is a lot of waffle, you can skip the first 4 minutes of the first part

Essentially what I did was:
1, Make blocks and join them into strips.  Cut strips of backing same size as pieced strips.
2, Sandwich and quilt the first strip making sure that there's at least an inch unquilted along the side to be joined.
3, Trim the wadding in the first strip to the stitching line (1/4" short of the edge of the strips.)
4, Join first pieced strip to the second pieced strip.
5, Join first backing strip to the second backing strip.
6, Spread it out over the floor and flip the second pieced strip back.
7, Carefully slide in another strip of wadding so that it touches the first strip of wadding.
8, Turn the second pieced strip back over the wadding, smooth it out and pin it down well.
9, Quilt the second strip taking the stitching over the join in places but again leave an inch or so at the other side unquilted.

Repeat from step 3 as often as necessary.  In the last strip quilt right up to the edge.

Don't they look at any Indie designers who are producing clothes close to what people are wearing now? They seem stuck in a time warp where women are dressing up to attend gala events!

@Starryfish what?  you don't wear your posh frock and tiara to the shops?  Every day should be a special day, doncha know 0_0

In the wardrobe / Re: Cutting singularly or double?
« on: February 02, 2024, 08:11:13 AM »
I never follow that pattern layouts anyway as they are definitely not economical and I can usually knock around half a meter off the recommended meterage.  I generally cut double, sometimes folding the fabric so that I have 2 folded edges with the selveges running up the middle, but if I have a pattern piece that can be cut singly, I will fit it in and around the doubled fabric and cut out after.  But generally, I wouldn't choose to cut singularly as I would get the pattern pieces the wrong way round!

I do love the look of a wrap dress but they just make my boobs look weird!  Not much to talk about in that selection at all.

Dolls and Toys / Re: Sewing For Dolls
« on: January 31, 2024, 14:33:20 PM »
@Acorn a Google search comes up with the idea of using fabric conditioner on a dolls hair to detangle it, I have no idea if it works but might be worth a go if you’re going to cut it anyway.

I tried to suggest this yesterday but pooter was not playing nicely so gave up!

Technical Help / Re: major issues with armhole gaping
« on: January 23, 2024, 15:42:39 PM »
Thank you.  I am making it with sleeves

Have you done the toile with the sleeves in?  You should always do this as the sleeves will affect the way the bodice hangs and it may not be as noticeable with the sleeves in situ.

Might also be helpful for you to post photos so we can see better what is going on.

Hi Aliz, welcome.

It would be useful if you could post a photo of the dress so that we can advise you better/best.

Current Projects / Re: Help with finding fabrics please - layer cake
« on: January 22, 2024, 08:47:36 AM »
Thats a nice easy and effective make @Missie  ...

but you might find 67 1/2"  a bit big to quilt if youre new to quilting ... simple is best I would suggest a serpentine stitch (on the largest stitch width) across the width (54") would look nice. Remembering to restart the stitch when you begin each row.

Thanks @Iminei I'm not going to make it as big as that.  I'm probably going to half - two thirds of the size.  I'll see when I make it up. And it will definitely be simple quilting; possibly just straight lines across.

Current Projects / Help with finding fabrics please - layer cake
« on: January 19, 2024, 10:35:53 AM »
Hello oh knowledgeable dark siders.

A friend of mine is about to undergo chemo and I'd like (if I can, you know time and not much of.......) to make her a quilt to snuggle on the sofa with.  I quite like The Simple Stack Quilt as it will be fairly quick and and am thinking of QAYG.  Her favourite colour is pale blue, has anyone come across a layer cake that is primarily pale blue?  I've had a quick look but I can't see anything.  Otherwise, I might just go all out colourful with a pale blue backing.

Thanks for your help.

In the wardrobe / Re: Fabric print style?

If you search "John Kaldor fabrics online Santa Cruz stretch woven satin", you get a whole load of fabrics come up.  Not quite in the same print but lots of lovely (IMO) designs.

This might also be a no-no for you being as it is a wedding, but Minerva also do it in black?

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Re: Quilt Binding

@Iminei And all the dressmakers here will be wondering why you didn't pattern match that  ::thinks::

My eye was twitching and I was hyperventilating whilst thinking "Nope.  No, no, no.  I would have to match that up!"
