The Haberdashery / Re: Invisible zipper question
« on: June 20, 2018, 14:33:43 PM »
If the piping is in a seam that the zip goes over, it's best to trim the cord that's inside the piping back, to just before the zip teeth and just have the piping fabric set under the zip. Also helps to trim back the little square of excess seam allowance on the inside, once the zip is in. Reduces any bulk.
Hope that helps, and all goes well with the 'proper' one  :)

Just got my 1st email notification of the year, to my Hotmail account. Wonder if it was a fluke, or maybe I'll get more now.  :) :)

Patterns Discussion / Re: McCall's pattern sale?

I've made the shirt dress too, but had to take some of the fullness out of the back bodice. It billowed a bit too much for my liking. I think I had to shorten the bodice a bit too, but that's probably just me being a bit short-waisted.

How lovely! I like the sequin and bead details you've done on it. They really give it an 'under the sea' look. She'll love it!!

Yes @Lolli, I feel much better for the clear out, especially as this morning I had people come and collect their alterations. Got rid of 2 dresses,4 tops, 3 skirts, 3 adult bridesmaid dresses, 3 flower girl dresses, 2 boys trouser and waistcoat suits and 2 pairs of men's trousers. That freed up a bit of space! Still too much in the room, but it's much better than it was.  :) :)

Just finished! I can see the floor again, shabby carpet and all, but it's clean!!
Now need a few people to come and pick up their alterations and make room for the new ones.
On with the sewing  :vintage: :pin: :thread:

Decided this morning, before I started any more work, I would muck out the sewing room. It's got so bad that I'm having to move things out each morning in order to get into the room, and the floor space is down to about 2 square metres and knee deep in cotton ends.
Well, I'm beginning to wish I'd never started. I've bagged up 3 charity bags full of fabric offcuts that I'd been saving for 'just in case', (why can't I part with even the smallest bits of fabric  ><), moved things about a bit and am still nowhere near to a useable sewing room! Definitely trying to fit a quart into a pint pot!
Time to go and face a bit more, it'll be worth it in the end, even though I should be getting on with some actual work. I'm sure I'll work more efficiently once it's done  :) :)

Current Projects / Re: A boning question
« on: May 03, 2018, 13:26:06 PM »
Hi Jessie,
If your seam allowances are big enough you can use them as a casing. Or quite often the boning is just stitched to the seam allowance. To stop it prickling through the fabric, I usually fold and iron a square patch of firm vilene over the ends if it's Rigilene. Or use a firm fabric folded over the ends. It just helps to stop it cutting through the main fabric.
With regards to taming the curl, yes you can press it, but don't overdo it or it ends up curling the other way. Been there, got the t shirt. This is assuming again that it's rigilene.
Good luck with it.

In the wardrobe / Re: Make me feel better..seam-ripping

It took 3 hours but I found it therapeutic.....is that weird?  :[

Not weird in my world! I love unpicking.... the trickier, the better. Lace off the hems of wedding dresses is my favourite, when they need to be shortened. I also enjoy the free motion stitching it all back on again.

Well, yesterday's trip to see my elderly (well she's a bit older than me  ;)) lady was a record breaker! Despite telling her I was pushed for time and hoped she didn't have a lot of work for me, she managed to spin it out to 3 1/2 hours! She had me dragging out and putting away dresses from years ago, to see if they either still fitted or could be made longer. So, I've come away with another stack to try and reincarnate!!
Next time I'll say I can stay as long as she likes, and maybe I'll get away quicker  0_0. Ended up working till 11.45pm to recover the lost afternoon.
Bless her!

OMG, how I wish I had such an organised sewing room, Lolli.
Mine is so untidy and bursting at the seams, that I've set up another machine on a fold away table in the lounge, to do a large wedding dress alteration. I'd never get it in the room and I haven't the time to clear up all the coloured cotton ends that would glue themselves to the net petticoats. Actually quite enjoying all the space and freedom from the mess. Back to normality tomorrow though, squeezing through the gap between bridesmaid and prom dresses hanging on both sides of the door. Rails are full to capacity, so this is the overflow.
I think I've outgrown my tiny sewing room  :(.
