The Haberdashery / Tailor's Clapper
« on: January 30, 2018, 07:10:01 AM »
Do any of you guy's use a tailor's clapper? If so what do you use your's for?
I thought it was just another do-dah which I would order and use once but I must say I am more than delighted with what I have used it for so far (ie not much!!) I am hoping it will be useful to stop the crinkle when I fuse interfacing to some of my fabrics but I've not had the occasion to use it for that as yet, it does however make a HUGE difference to flat seams.
After the hectic year I have had sewing handbags I am venturing into the world of making 'proper' purses - not just a zip up thing but something with a coin zip compartment, a place for credit/ store cards a note divider etc etc - you know the type of thing and I am hoping it will help flatten the fabric and cut down on bulk.
I ordered one from eBay and it's utterly beautiful as a piece of crafted wood - totally stroke-able - but perhaps that's just me!!
Tell me your uses please xxxx

I have some biggish pieces of black lace left over from my posh frock.

It's quite heavy, cotton or mostly cotton rather than poly, but it doesn't have scalloped edges.  You are welcome to have some of that.

Absolutely flippin' marvelous Brenda - I only need a few scraps about 6" square or whatever makes up that sort of size, I have some narrow scalloped I'll attach for visual effect - I'll PM you thanks

Sorry lizzielogs but it was what everyone else wrote that made me laugh out loud.

I have some 'Jet Black Crushed Stretch Velvet Dress Fabric' I bought just before Christmas and haven't used and have more than enough to give you some. If you think it may be suitable then just let me know how much you need and I will send it to you tomorrow morning? It's a nice weight and great quality.

Lizzy

p.s.I didn't see that velvet may do until now.

Thanks Lizzy to be honest I only thought about the velvet alternative after I had posted the plea! I need about 3inches wide and 2' long ...will PM you

When looking for the pleather I found a couple of off cuts of shinier pvcish stuff.

One is 18" long and is 3" at its narrowest and about 8" wide for the majority of its length.  The other is 13" by 11".

If either of these are any good PM me your address and I'll pop them in the post for you.

Either would be fab Ellabella- thank you so much will PM you now...................................

Glad to have brightened up your Thursday - made my eyes bleed just looking at to to be fair-
Ellabella is your pleather just off cuts or a big piece as I can't find anything on eBay to suit!? Just had a tour of the charity shops in town and didn't have much joy in any of them either.
Woe, woe and thrice woe!  :D :D :D

I do have some black lace, but no PVC.  I'll dig out what I have later to see if it's suitable.

Jessie

Thank you so much Jessie!

I think most of the peeps at TSP are 10 years plus past such things!!!!    :o

Although I do (IIRC) have a container of various rubber items slowly deteriorating in the loft somewhere!

Just stop it Imi!!

OK so a friend has asked me to alter a basque - it's black PVC and deep black lace (if your imagination is running riot the actual item IS just as you are thinking!)
I need a piece of black PVC 1' long and 10" wide and about a foot of heavy black lace 10" deep - have any of you got anything laying around I could buy off you please?
It's a"just job" (could you just.........??) so I don't want to order a FQ of PVC - even assuming they sell such a thing!
Thanks for reading ladies
Lizzielogs

Just had a thought a bit of black velvet would do and I could alter the front ties to velvet ribbon rather than the PVC laces they are  - if anyone have an offcut of black velvet OR PVC I would be most grateful!!!!!

@Lizzielogs The stripes and the flowers are still available, but the spots have already be claimed. There are two FQs of the flowers - would you like one or both?

Just one please Stitch
Thank you

40
Could I please be second in line if sewmuchmore doesn't have the kimono fabric please? x

41
If not already claimed could I have the blue stripes (pic 1) and the blue spots (pic 4) along with a pink and blue flowers (pic 6) I'm going to have a stab at making a wallet and they blend beautifully.
I am more than willing to pay towards postage x

Machine Accessories / Re: Bobbin Winder

I looked for it and the brand is Simplicity not Singer.  Reviews are mixed, it does not seem to be very fast, doesn't like large reels or cones and takes 2 x AA batteries.  Some are delighted, some not.  It is described as suitable for 'most' bobbins. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but it sounds as if it is OK for occasional use.

Thank you T&T, I ust have read similar reviews on the Simplicity and it seems very ambivalent, I think I was hoping someone say they had a different brand and it was marvelous!!
