Would vinyl floor covering do it?  There are so many variations on the 'pretty' side you might be able to find something suitable? The underneath is very like a mouse mat and you would be able to buy a small bit of it cheap in most carpet type places.

I fancy having a go with some cork sheet and some sort of anti slip rubber/backing underneath, or with some car upholstery vinyl I have lying around and some of this Non Slip Spun Bond if I can figure a way of bonding them together

@Sew What? The only problem i can think of with the neoprene/mouse mat/gaming mat is that it may be designed to be non slip on the desk/table/workbench but the top of the top of the fabric/mat is designed for speedy mouse action so may well be too slippy to anchor your guitar. My worse half has an old bath sheet/towel  that he put on top of his table when changing string etc.

Yep, didnt even consider that. Just tried it, like an ice rink.

Looks like Im starting a new search.

Not fabric to buy by the metre but what about a sewing machine mat? Woodseats do some large ones.
Or EUFabrics sell varies thickness neoprene, i have used the self adhesive to line the storage lockers on the boat.
website here

I'll check them out. Looks like a fools errand for the rubber backed mouse/desk mat material.

Mr BC bought a table protector for using with his guitars (the brown coloured type with thick felt under.....not pretty, but does the job)
Thats not bad to be honest. Thanks

Would a yoga mat give you the right sort of material?
Possibly, I'll have a look. I'd prefer the neoprene non slip type to be honest but I cant find it at the mo

Fun with Fabric / Workbench Mat Material Suggestions please

Can anyone suggest some materials for a workbench mat please?

Ive been doing more work on my guitar lately and need to make some sort of mat to go on a bench/table. Ive tried looking for the material that they make Gaming Mats out of but Ive come up blank, I think its neoprene with a non slip rubber backing. I could just buy a few of those but I'd rather make my own is Ive got a few desks that I want to cover as well. It doesnt have to that material but it needs some sort of non slip backing on it.

Any suggestions?

Cordura shouldn't be more difficult to sew than thick denim. These budget new machines are very flimsy, especially since you've had a Pfaff! I'd look for an old metal workhorse machine. You'll only need straight stitch for sandbags. I've just serviced a 1970s Frister Rossmann which was my neighbour's & she wants to sell. If you're near enough to try it you're welcome to. It's so heavy I wouldn't post it though!

Im in the Midlands so a bit far away. Theres a Frister Rosmman Fantasy 972 near me but cant find out much about it

@Sew What? Ask if you can see it before buying. If it turns over OK by hand & isn't rusted up then you could oil it up, new needle & it'd probably be ok. I see ads near here for people asking £100 plus for old machines without foot control  :scream: my neighbour thought she'd get £150 for hers (after I'd serviced it & paid for PAT test) so I showed her 'sold' listings on eBay. She's now agreed that £45 would be more reasonable! I haven't advertised it yet, still peeved about doing service etc when I thought she was going to start using it again.

Its got just about everything with it from accessories to service book so Im fairly sure its OK. Its up for auction so Ill have to see how it goes

The Brother has already sold so a quick Ebay shows a Frister 504 not far from me. A quick YouTube shows it sewing up to 4 layers of sailcloth so should do the trick. The only problem is its from someone who does house clearances so they only say "it works"

They're a good choice for the price - relatively sturdy little machines.

Corduroy is much more needle friendly than it looks. It's tendency to creep along the pile is more of an issue than needle penetration, though using a sturdy jeans needle wouldn't hurt. Its thickness can make it difficult to pin but plastic clips work a treat on it.

Thanks. There's one for sale near me so I might just go for it. It was cordura I might be using, not corduroy  but you never know!

I've got a small project Im thinking of but sold my old Pfaff a while back and Im without a machine.

All Im doing is sewing something along the lines of a box shaped sand filled weight but it will be in heavier than normal material, probably up to something like cordura, havent decided yet. Ive seen the odd review of it doing a couple of layers of denim so Im hoping it might be up to the task.

Does anyone have experience using this with heavier material?

If it cant cope what would you recommend?

Id say budget is around £100 so Im not expecting miracles or longevity, its more a proof of concept to see if its viable.

Thanks

Machine Accessories / Re: Needle size for this thread?

#30 is Shun Mark's color code, BTW.  So, researching this, from SM's main company page we get this:

http://www.sl-thread.com/en/products/product_25.html showing T-70, T-90, T-135, T-210, T-270 as weight.  And we know this is the right product, because the other one is poly core, not nylon.

So now, which weight do you have?  Well, another company has the same usage, but they use D Tex system.  (The 150 is weight, the 3 is strands wrapped together).
https://www.amazon.com/Upholstery-Outdoor-Drapery-Beading-Luggage/dp/B01C26BBI4?th=1

In the Q&A they say it's T92...but now Shun Mark doesn't have that, but they do have T90, so you can assume that SM will be in the same range, which leaves you with the T90.

So now you have the Tex, find the needle.
https://www.tolindsewmach.com/thread-chart.html

On that you see a 19/120 for the T92, so you have a needle size.  (18 or 20 is going to be the easier to find, though, but you now have a range of sizes.)

So, what are you sewing?  Canvas?  Outdoor furniture covers?  Marine stuff?  Well...
https://www.sailrite.com/Notions/Sewing-Needles/Sewing-Machine-Needles
And that explains the different types and what you may need to choose from there to find the right needle.

In a tl; dr, researching shows it to likely be T90, needle size 18 or 20 based on fabric and a sharps for general purpose.

I think all I can say is thank you. Thats brilliant info.

Not sure where this should be posted so if it needs moving Mod alert.

I bought some bonded nylon thread as Im sewing Cordura. Ive been using 90 or 100 jeans needles just because thats all I had but wondered if theyre the right ones for the job. Im useless when it comes to deciphering thread sizes so any help would be great,

The thread is as in the pic below

Sewing Machines / Industrial machine recommendations
« on: February 04, 2020, 12:40:36 PM »
For once I'm thinking ahead. It's becoming a bit more obvious that the material I'm using is pushing the limits of my Pfaff 84 so I'm on the lookout for something that will chew through 4 odd layers of 1000d cordura, vinyl and all the other heavier fabrics I've got my eye on.

Budget isn't massive, say £200 or so and second hand. Had a look on eBay and there's a Pfaff 442 twin needle near me but I'm clueless as to whether that can use a single needle, just a double or both.

If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears!

Try Robert Theobald. Formerly my man in Luton, he retired to Weymouth but still trades in spares and knows all there is to know about machines.

Thanks, Ive emailed him.

Machine Accessories / Replacement foot control
« on: January 29, 2020, 13:37:05 PM »
The foot control on my Pfaff 85 is pretty old and not that easy to control as its the old mechanical (?) type rather than electronic ones like this

Wiring the replacement isnt a problem, the problem is finding the right pedal to replace this as it has a 3 wire (core) with live, neutral and earth. All the ones Ive found are 2 wire.

Anyone know of a replacement for this type?

Thanks
