So was I

It seems the problems were caused by overnight maintenance by our TSO, out web host. The work should have finished by 5 o'clock this morning, but obviously there was something still going on.

Nothing I could do about it, I'm afraid.

I've noticed some slowness, so I'm monitoring...

Singer, Viking and Pfaff are all part of SVP.

Janome and Elna are the same.

Just to clarify, Janome owns Elna, and is not part of SVP. However, Janome does make machines for SVP – the Emerald 116 is mechanically identical to the Janome Sewist 525 (as is the Elna eXplore 340).

Joy's Sewing Machines reincarnated?

@Bill If you paid by credit card, purchased over £100 are protected, so if you have no success with Singer Outlet you can claim from your credit card company.

550W motor  :faints:

Maximum power when running at full speed under load.

Jack makes good motors, and it's one of these that I'm connecting to my 201K. They run silently, and are surprisingly compact. I had no idea they make a version of the 20U. Drooling.

@Bill — Sale of Goods Act – item must be fit for purpose and free from defects. Item, wear and tear excepted, should be good for 6 years.

Distance Selling Regulations – you have a right to change your mind within 14 days of deliver, though item must be return in original packaging and in 'as new' condition.

Regardless of what Singer Outlet tells you, the law is on your side. They'll try to wriggle out of it, so be prepared to threaten them a) with the small claims court; b) a winding up order (this is bound to put the wind up them - if they don't refund, the assumption will be that they lack the funds and are, therefore, insolvent. Upshot, they are forced to cease trading.)

But those are last resorts. Make it clear that you know your rights, tell them what you want, set a deadline, and, and warn them of your planned course of action should they not comply with applicable laws.

The trouble with an industrial is they are straight stitch only or zig zag only, if you need both it’s a problem.

Singer made an industrial that did both - the Singer 20U. They are quite sought after. I'd like one, but even if I could afford it, I have no space left. Besides, Mrs Twingo wouldn't permit it.

I'm currently working on attaching an industrial servo motor to my Singer 201K… it's almost ready to show the world. Just a few tweaks and tests to complete.

Lol. I did say it was a curse! I think it developed as a coping mechanism from childhood trauma.

There was a time when I never had to read the manual (for any technology). It was pretty darn obvious what different buttons did. But now, with everything being computerised, I have to read the manual. There are so few buttons, but so many functions, it's nigh on impossible to remember to press button A together with button B, whilst tapping button D twice, then releasing buttons A and B… all that just to be able to access a secondary menu that enables fine adjustments.

Jamming on these machines isn't unusual, in my experience. With mine, it looks as if the bobbin is misbehaving, but it turns out it's the needle thread tension – it seems that the thread has slipped out of one of the various guides. In most cases, for me, it's at the take-up lever. Re-threading almost always resolve the jamming.

We could have a pedantic discussion about whether two spaces after a full stop is grammar or typography.

It's neither grammar nor typography. Grammar is the set of rules a language uses to convey meaning, whereas typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed.

I would say the use of two spaces after a full stop is one of convention. Much like the centering of the sign off (which nobody seems to do these days), was once the norm.

Ligatures are examples of typographic beauty:

fl fi vs fl fi
and g a vs g a

Veg tan is tough. Very tough. But it marks easily and doesn't feed too well. Use the lightest presser foot pressure (level 1 I think is the lowest on these machines), and use wither a walking foot or roller foot.

Tech Know How / Re: Certificate expiry causing error message

Although Firefox has been my main browser for many years, I'm starting to move over to the DuckDuckGo browser. It works very well, but lacks plug-ins so I can't download videos from YouTube.

Apologies for the Duke of York* experience over the past few days.

The problem arose from a faulty SSL certificate. This is the code that tells your browser that the website is secure and trusted. There was only a minor error in the certificate – an incorrect date, I believe – but it was enough for Firefox to have a bit of a tantrum.

In trying to resolve this, last night I managed to lose the 'private key' needed to unlock the certificate, which is why the site suddenly appeared to be insecure for everyone, not just Firefox users.

A new certificate and key have now been issued, and everything seems to be back to normal.

* Duke of York – a term I have just coined to describe a website that is neither up nor down.

Thanks @MrTwingo, though having to go through a menu for every tap makes it quite unusable :(

  I feel your frustration!

I hope I can resolve the issue today. Fingers crossed.
