Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Misery
« on: November 11, 2021, 00:03:43 AM »

Another scrap buster project all cut out and ready to go  but I'm 4 weeks post shoulder surgery with another 2 weeks in a wretched sling. I tried one armed sewing and it did not go well for my machine, my accuracy and my patience. I may have even heard my machine and fabric quietly sobbing as I passed the sewing room later that day they were so traumatised by the event :(
My recovery is not going well due to a gazillion factors and several months down the track I have the other shoulder to  then be addressed.  sigh, I'm just gonna be lurking around on you all for quite some time :(

Current Projects / Just finished and starting to like it!
« on: July 11, 2021, 02:41:50 AM »
Finished this today...all except for darning in the ends and giving it its first wash. I'm very pleased with how the flange binding turned out and I think I will make this my regular method. I had to scrap around to find suitable fabric in my stash but think I did ok.  I had a bit of a "nervous nelly" moment when sewing the binding on as I wanted to use green thread for the top and yellow for the bobbin. How delighted was I that I got my tension spot on and neither thread colour peeked through to the other side! love, love, love my Juki!

Current Projects / Not my usual colours....what was I thinking!

This quilt has been in the making for over 12 months but is finally almost finished. I miscalculated my fabric and am going to have to snuffle about in my stash for something suitable for binding: I am determined to use up stash and not buy anything. I quilted this in a 1" diagonal crosshatch and was delighted to find that on finishing the quilting I was only about 1/2" out of square!
The pattern is called "Triangle Jitters" by Suziquilts.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Wall Hanging
« on: March 18, 2021, 05:25:52 AM »
I've been waaaaaaaay absent of late due to taking time out looking after an injured shoulder and neck which has curtailed my activities significantly. This is my completed wall hanging top. When it is finished it should measure about 45" x 48".

I have been determined through necessity (thankyou Covid lockdown) to not buy any fabrics until I have used up all my scraps and leftovers. So, I pulled out all my fabrics, even the drop dead ugly fugly ones, and dragged out all my patterns and after sorting through  all my autumn tone bits and pieces I determined I had enough to put together a wall hanging using my Judy Neimeyer "Desert Sky" pattern as a base.

Leaping into action without checking my file cabinet, I kicked the scanner and printer into action and spent a frenzied morning printing out all my paper sections and segments only to find that in the file cabinet I already had a heap of spares printed and leftover from last time...grrrrr, oh well, more papers ready for next time I guess. I love this pattern, it goes together so easily....it's a good beginner fpp project.....and even if you don't have the balance of shading in your colours, or the quantity of fabrics that the pattern requires, you can still make a pretty nice layout.

I'll quilt this in 1/2" vertical lines......it came out well on my "Desert Sky" (my avatar)  so I anticipate likewise for this one, plus, it's super easy to do if not a little tedious but hey....loud music, mellow state of mind and a glass of red...I'm set!

Vintage Machines / Can anyone identify the make of this?
« on: January 02, 2021, 07:08:19 AM »
A friend has been given this treadle base, (unfortunately with no head in it) and is trying to identify the make of it. Is anyone familar with this? I have scoured t'intenet and can't find anything like it. It has absolutely no markings, lettering or numbers on it anywhere. :(

Current Projects / Wall Hanging...another Carl Hentsch pattern
« on: September 14, 2020, 07:01:29 AM »
Starting to take shape, just need to make another 3/4 block to "go on top" and then I can put centre circles and backgrounds on. I'm just not sure what colour the centres will be. The backgrounds will be a grunge cream mottle but I feel the centres need to be a bold colour...maybe a dark mottled green perhaps. This has been put together just using what stuff I have...am determined not to purchase fabric atm.   Very happy with how this is coming together. Have I ever mentioned how much I love fpp!

My daughter who is a registered nurse working in a busy large  Melbourne metropolitan Hospital Emergency department had asked me a few years back to make a rag quilt for her out of her childrens' old pajamas from when they were little tots....something to snuggle into on the couch and as a memento of when the children were little...and cute...and nice ;).

She has been working under extremely difficult times with the Covid Pandemic, her shifts are not easy and her diligence, compassion and dedication to her job under such horrendous pressures has been absolutely admirable.  I am so very proud of her.  So, after finishing "Papyrus" which was so intricate and "new" for me, I was ready and more than happy to get stuck into a "cut and bang" quilt. So here it is..all finished, 76" x 70"....with the obligatory error discovered after washing it (can you see it?).  Sewn on one of my vintage girls...the 201. "She" is now getting a pull apart and a clean and tickle as she is just about stuffed to pussys' bow with flannel and batting fluff as you can imagine!

What a wretched pity I can't deliver it to her as she is out of my 5km allowed travel radius. It will have to wait until I go to work at the end of next week as I drive past her house then. :'(

Vintage Machines / 201K woes
« on: August 22, 2020, 06:08:23 AM »
I'm currently trying to sew a flannel rag quilt with my 201. I have a low shank walking foot on it, have lowered my tension and lengthened my stitch length to accommodate the thickness I'm sewing through and sewing at a nice sedate pace. Overrall it is going swimmingly except every 5 or 6 blocks my thread breaks and unthreads back through 3 thread guides right back up to the take up lever. Can anyone help me with this?

Yes, my "Papyrus" quilt blocks are finally all pieced and quilted and ready for my virgin flight into the realm of QAYG.

We're in stage 4 lock down here in Melbourne which means the ONLY businesses allowed to be open are Supermarkets, pharmacies, chemists, "pilot flame"  construction and essential services. So....NO fabric shops, no clothing, no bookstores etc etc.

The evening arrives when I am ready to organise myself for commencing my magical mystery tour of QAYG. Oh dear, no sashing fabric purchased it would seem. After a moment of sheer panic and anguish I pull myself together and undaunted, and with a red wine in hand I sway (listening to Eva Cassidy) over to my abundant stash. About an hour, and a red refill later I emerge with my sacrificial fabric selected and sit down with pen, calculator, paper for writing calculations...lots of paper , and another wee red for company, and dutifully watch all the tuts I have bookmarked.

....and it is with great joy I have emerged from my sewing room approximately 2 days later with ONE sashing sewn. I am overjoyed, proud as punch and rather impressed that I managed to find a fabric in my weird assortment of stash.

I know we quilt from the centre out, or from edge to edge but I have a dilemma. I have 21" squares which I am going to join with QAYG so I have my squares individually sandwiched. I have "stabilised" them with some SITD and now want to do the actual quilting. Can I, seeing as how I have done some SITD, not start my quilting in the centre of the block? Whilst I have my walking foot on I thought I could just do all the walking foot quilting and leave the fmq which is in the centre of each block until last. Do you reckon that would be ok?

Whilst quarantined like everyone else I decided to make good use of the time and cleared out and reorganised my stash and was delighted to find that I had enough blues and whites to make another Compass Rose table runner...this time for one of my daughters' whose decor is sharp, clean blues, whites and greys. I haven't given it to her yet...I may get Mr.Ruby to drop it off on her doorstep one night on his way home from work as he passes her house...but then again, I'd like to wait and give it to her in person once this is all over or restrictions eased a bit.

Current Projects / "Papyrus" pattern by Carl Hentsch
« on: May 03, 2020, 05:07:12 AM »
I have finished my 9 blocks....20.5" square and have decided to put them together QAYG so that I can more confidently quilt on each block. Each block comprises of a different layout incorporating flying geese, blades and 1/4 circles.I can't get out and buy my backing fabric as the LQS is closed but may give in and call in to the local big box Haby store on my way home from work next week. The pic doesn't do the block justice as the different creams and beiges don't really show up very nicely but I am thrilled with them "in the flesh" and looking forward to trying QAYG.

Ignoring the self binding bit at the end of this tute, what do you think of this simple method for QAYG?
