Title: The start of something special
Post by: Diane on June 02, 2017, 18:36:52 PM
So looking forward to tomorrow, it will be the first day in my new sewing room  :loveit:: can't wait to get started on my blocks for my memory quilt although I haven't a clue where or what I'll be starting with. I was going to paint the room first but I do have two weeks off work so can do it next week, it is clean and tidy so I'm not that bothered  :D will have the house to myself all two weeks as hubby will be at work. Might quickly pop in to town to the fabric shop for just a quick look and maybe into hobbycraft on my way back, naughty really but I just can't help myself, I will try to be good and not buy too much
Will post some pics of my first block attempt

Well ladies as promised, here is a picture of my first ever attempt at a quilt block, I'm pleased with it, I don't expect it to be perfect but I'm sure I'll improve as I go along.

Thanks :D
Really enjoyed doing that, had my iPad and was watching Amy Gibson as I went along with the   :sew:
Do you think it would look weird on a quilt if I had a mixture of darker colours on some blocks as opposed to all pastel colours?
Title: Re: The start of something special
Post by: Lowena on June 03, 2017, 16:46:09 PM
Not weird at all  :)
What a great block, you don't do anything by halves do you? My first 3 quilts were just different arrangements of squares! Go you!  :D
Title: Re: The start of something special

I thought I'd bitten off more than I could chew, but once I got started it sort of fell in to place.
Went to hobbycraft this morning and accidentally bought some extra templates (they were half price) thought it rude not to indulge. Got some lovely fat quarters as well.
Had to buy another cutting mat as mine was too small to take the 12.5" square template, needs must.
Just looking at my next block design, so many different patterns to choose from, not sure how many I'll need for a kingsize bedspread, will measure later.

If thats your first block Diane I can tell you are going to go a long long way in this hobby of ours! Very well done! You don't do things by halves and it's wonderful. :flower: :flower: :flower:

The dark colours would look good in a quilt together with the pastels, make some blocks and keep playing with them until they look right. All the colour theory in the world can't make up for what looks right. Be daring stand back, try something else see what happens. Make visual decisions visually and develope your own style. :)

I've never done any patchwork quilting ever, apart from joining those squares together as mentioned in one of my other posts.

I'll certainly mix up the darks and lights and like you say, just mess around with it until it catches my eye and looks right.

I did have a quick go at some free motion quilting earlier on, did it on some scrap fabric, will need to practice a bit more but I certainly got the feel of it. Ordered some quilting gloves to make moving the fabric a bit easier.

I'm sure your fantastic at what you do :D
I've always loved sewing but only ever made the odd bit of clothing, can't say I've enjoyed the clothes making as much as I have the patchwork today, think I've found my niche.

Just made another block, it's a bit busy looking, but I quite like it.

Thanks
Will do another block tomorrrow, got some more fabric on order which should be here in the morning. Need to wait for my bigger cutting mat before I do anymore as I slightly undercut the one I just did on one side as it moved, bit it was only a tiny bit so I'll probably get away with it. Will try something triangular tomorrow.

WOW, that block is amazing!!!!

Seriously the fabrics certainly help make it almost an optical illusion.....
the centre, though not round looks like a fish eye and 3D and the star has life.

If I were you Diane, and you had enough fabric, I would make a wall hanging of that one block, say 3 x 3 ?!
Choose the border carefully to increase/maintain the illusion feel and you will have made something outstanding!

When you say 3x3 do you mean in inches? That's pretty small? Or three blocks by three blocks?

Looks appliqued Imi :)

And if we're trying to convince that bargellos are the best and most fun I have attached a link to my first designed and made bargello (all moda fabrics, with a lovely batik backing, bamboo wadding)... ;)  they most definitely are the best fun, even if they do involve heavy planning and maths ;)

Very rough instructions so beware.

1. You need 4 x diamonds, the template I used was 3" cut them in half so 8 pieces.
2. Ignore the 3" square, it needs to be 4" you need one of these.
3. Using the triangles stitch to each side of the square, right sides together. Open out and iron flat.
4. Lay the other four triangles at the corners of the square and pin in place.
5. Using your machine zigzag around the inner side of the square to hold them in place.
6. Lay on to your background fabric, mine was 12.5" square and pin.
7. I just zigzag stitched along all the edges, outer and inner.

I've attached some pictures but it is rough so beware.

Just go really slow and make sure your needle is on the correct side when you turn a corner.

Before that, how do you line it up with the edge of the piece to be appliqued? Mine is always all on the shape or all on the background fabric - I can never straddle the two  -<

I always make sure that the needle is on the right when I start and it's just in the background fabric.

I make them up as I go along until it looks right, on this 3rd one I sewed together three jelly strips then cut them using a Dresden template, alternating the colours as I went. I used a 5" Dresden and I think it took 24 strips to get it to lie flat.

Diane, I hate to rain on your wonderful parade ...but are you actually piecing anything ???

It looks to me that what you are doing is cutting out shapes, placing them on top of a background fabric and sewing them down ... ie appliqueing them!

Which is fine to a point, but not actually P&Q ... Have you tried any of the BOMs ??
Either on The Sewing Place or Craftsy ??

The first Dresden one I done I followed Amy Gibson and that's how she done it. She created the Dresden then applied it to a 12.5" background and stitched around it? These are only a few samples just to get me back in the swing of it, I'm aware that you make the whole block by piecing fabric together and then trimming it to make it square.

Post by: Diane on June 05, 2017, 06:47:01 AM
It was Amy Gibson's block of the month 2012 lessons, you recommended it to me.

The Dresden blocks are actually pieced together and not laid on and appliqued, only the outer edge has been zigzag stitched on to the block.

I realise  that (I bottled out of that one as I didn't have the templates) Have you tried any of the others ??? The Dutchmans puzzle (?) had me tearing my hair out as it came out nowhere near the 12 1/2" it should, so I added a border !

I always hate when that hafpens. Especially when you can't work out why. It looks like you have two different HST sizes - were the sa the same on both sizes? As sometimes that can mess it up, or the dimensions for triangles sometimes are post piecing and don't include the sa! Depends on where you get the directions and how good they are ;)

Happened to me on a hunters star I did. Resized it to 10" block. Cut everything out, thought that's looking a tad small, pieced it and measured it and added a border! Mine didn't include sa so when I resized I lost 2 inches. Still looked nice with she 1" border!

I've never done any that require templates, unless I can draw them on a cereal packet myself, because I refuse to buy the weird shapes that I'll hardly ever use.

Well here's my first attempt at a Dutchmans block. Measured everything several times before cutting and like yours, it has come up short? Will need to add a border tomorrow to make up to the right size block. Going to add a very small embellishment as one of my points was a teeny bit short of centre, enough to annoy me anyway.

Another two blocks done, the first one is finished, not perfect but I'm happy with it and I'm learning which is the main thing. Second one not quite finished as the background has a flaw in the stitches so need to purchase some more fabric.

This is a comment, Diane, not a criticism: experiment with more value (light/dark) contrast. If things blend or 'go' together too closely the overall effect of a design can be lost. If you haven't got/don't want to buy more fabric for the moment, some squared paper and coloured pencils let you try things out first.

Thanks for the advice, I need all the help I can get really. I see what you mean about the pattern getting lost, the Dresden sunburst I'm going to have a much darker background so that will help show the pattern up more.
I can't stop buying fabric at the moment, it's like an addiction. I'm just playing around at the moment with the blocks but the next one I do I'll try having more contrasting colour.
Thanks for helping

I struggle with that as well Diane. Mine either look like soup or a chess board. I can't find a happy medium!  0_0
You're churning out blocks fit to bust and you'll learn something different with every one.
I'm learning a lot from the BOM thread and also the quiltalongathon.
