Title: Needles!
Post by: Gernella on May 28, 2019, 11:37:42 AM
I've upgraded since 2008, to using one machine needle that was only replaced when I managed to bring it down on something I shouldn't and it broke to a small round pin box that is full of old needles.

What  do you do with them/where do you send them?

I put mine in a plastic vitamin bottle so they can’t hurt anyone and then they go in the bin. Getting rid of any sort of sharps is so difficult.

I have a similar system, but then they go into the metals skip at the recycling centre. Broken needles, bent pins, staples from paperwork, all that sort of thing.

I put mine in an old saffron pot, then put them in a can in the recycling...

I use old photographic film canisters - the type that used to hold small rolls of film. Then, when full, they go in the recycling. Feel quite virtuous changing needles often. :)

I use any tiny pot I can find - ie Tic Tacs, photo film canisters, empty spice pots etc and put them in the bin.  Our recycling place doesn't have specific metal recycling, annoyingly.   But that's not a problem round here - any metal goods left outside get swiped overnight.

We have an official sharps box for veterinary needles and they go in there. it will probably be another 20 years before it is full.

I use an old salt container, the kind that has salt crystals. It has small round holes and a larger hole. I’ve still not filled it up, but will recycle them .

I use a small prescription med bottle with a small hole drilled in the top so machine needles just drop in. Take off the top for bent pins and pulled staples. Same bottle for two years now - less than half full. (I'm easy on needles.)

When its full, I'll switch the top with the hole onto a new bottle.

There's a benefit of old age - endless supply of med bottles.

Now if they just served any purpose other than used needles.....

I've got a sharps bin and they go in there, I'll never fill it but the council will come and take it away if I ask them to although I'll never admit to them it doesn't contain clinical sharps

I'm afraid I'm naughty and simply throw mine in my workroom bin that goes in the general waste dustbin each fortnight. However, I keep the plastic containers that rotary cutter blades come in to use for dull blades. Again these go in my dustbin.
In my defence, the bins are wheely bins that are just hooked onto the back of the wagon and tipped. I suppose animals at the tip could be harmed though - hmmm hadn't thought about that before!! -<

It's keeping your needles in not just a specific spice pot, but in one from a relatively rare spice.  Very artisan.

Wasn't there a line in the Donovan song, Mellow Yellow - something like "I'm just wild about saffron and saffron's wild about me"? I was never sure if it was supposed to be someone's name or whether it was reference to something else.

I thought that the title referred to smoking banana skins, which were rumoured to be hallogenic.

So, I was 8 when that song came out - Mellow Yellow. I can remember singing it at the top of my lungs - a personal favorite. Assumed "Saffron" was a "cool hippie name" for a girl.

According to Wiki, it actually is about an "electrical banana" (as mentioned in the song) otherwise known as - a vibrator! 0_0

Great laugh this morning, ladies! Nothing like catching a joke half a century later!!!

I always had a suspicion that the words referred to something that was outside my experience but didn't want to show my ignorance by asking (don't know who I would have asked anyway!).

Never forget that song as I had jaundice when it was released. Also never realised about eletrical bananas :o

Sometimes information comes just too late in life 0_0

Well I was thinking about getting a sharps box but just thought they would be difficult to find, until I looked on Amazon.  I should have known they wouldn't miss an opportunity.

Problem solved, thank you ladies and  gentleman.

I'm too old for hipstering and no man buns or excessively skinny trousers :o - thats my brother - hes a millennial vegan (who sometimes eats lobster) and totally self focused :) not sure he knows what saffron is tho :)

I used to be the goth/rock style and had very long hair (donated to charity now)! but I'm not sure that has anything to do with Saffron :) I do like a bit of cooking and get these little square containers of saffron once in a blue moon that contain a pinch and 1/2 for 3 or 4 quid but the  container is perfect for needles one pot will probably contain at my current rate a life times worth of needles!

In a sharps container, I have to get medical waste to take them (which a small container is $85) or mail program (not too bad, but I don't need a shoebox sized container).  My garbage collection told me to just put them in the trash and can not be in a container and I cannot put a sharps container in the dumpster.

Neither place recycles, though.
