Title: Suggestion box and bugs!
Post by: Francesca on February 28, 2017, 14:37:04 PM
Hello everyone!

We are likely to have some teething issues and possibly some suggestions for things we want in the site.

If you have suggestions, please let us know here. We can discuss and will aim to give a "yes no maybe" based on whether it's possible and how long it might take.

If you spot a bug, such as a problem with the forum software or how something looks, please post it here for the time being. Please also include the following:

1. What the problem is (provide a screenshot if it's visual)
2. What you expected to see
3. What browser you're using, with Version.
4. What device you're using.

Thank you very much, hopefully there won't be too many problems!

I'm registered but not 'approved' yet so presumably can't do my donation yet.  I seem to be able to wander round and have a look.  How long will my approval take?

Not really a bug, just to mention... When you post, sometimes (or maybe it is always) ones you press 'post' it accepts it but then takes you out of that thread.

Have just noticed that this message comes up at the top of the screen from time to time. Everything seems to work OK though.

I believe you are fully approved!

You should be able to choose subscribership by going to Profile > Actions > Paid Subscriptions :) Let me know if you have trouble.

I will see if this can be changed. Has been changed.

I had trouble logging in and found it to be a Chrome issue. Now that I access the forum through Explorer no problem at all. Just thought this might help others having problems in Chrome.

My username doesn't really fit the little box next to my posts - what a shame.  Any way of changing that?  I also notice some have the little circle on one line then their name underneath, presumably again due to limited space?
Not really a major problem, it just upsets my "ocd"!!

Mine too!

Noted and will likely be adjusted this evening. The online symbol will probably move to sit in the top corner of everyone's avatar.

Just to say I like that thingy whereby, if someone else posts in your thread while you are typing your essay of a post, you are asked if you want to review your post before posting - now that's good! ;D

I like it too! Though I am planning to restyle it as the red is very aggressive and makes it seem like you have done something wrong.

I think it's all beautiful ..... with the exception, if  I can make a teenie-weenie minor negative comment, of the boxes on the left-hand side with the avartars etc in them - some of them are quite long, and so if the poster has only written a couple of lines their "box" is longer than the post.  This can mean quite a lot of scrolling down.

Now ducking!

Yes, this is an awkward one.

The solution would be for us to crop everyone's avatars to square. This would be my personal preference as it makes life much, much easier.

However I know a lot of people will be up in arms about that. A very tough one. I am already having to code around it to wrangle it into submission, square avatars would stop that immediately.

For me the page displays the Posting person/avatar box on the left hand side the then post is displayed underneath - shouldn't they be side by side? Is this something I've messed with?  -<

Can you share a screenshot?

(On an iPad you can take one by holding the main button and the power button both at the same time, I think. Been a while since I used an iPad!)

The red might be a bit scary, but if we could keep the warning a different colour to the usual, it means we won't miss it.

Ohhhh! It's not that I've found a bug - I've discovered that I am a bug and looking for advice. Now just over half-way through unpacking - so much worse than packing - too many things scattered about without a proper home. Then my clutch went - didn't need that. But, the most important thing this morning was to make my donation and register. So... went to my PP account made the gift donation and then registered. Now I've discovered an email from PP to say that I've sent the money to ininie...

Can someone please tell me, in very simple words, what I should do?

Is your PayPal address different from the one used to sign up here?

The Imis will tie your user here together with your donation if the addresses are the same. If they are not, please give one of the Imis a private message to let them know so they can tie your PayPal payment with your account.

I'm afraid I am not keeper of the cash so I cannot do this for you.

I have a selection of iPads & Android tablets available - will be able to do more testing on Friday.

Initially we thought that a different theme would be the answer for mobile devices, but Fran is making such headway with the TSP theme that I think we should persevere.

The problem that Swisslass has posted also exists on a PC with the resolution set low, so it will probably relate to minimum browser width.

What do the buttons on the identity boxes signify?

Sorry, its not a bug just a query.
What do the buttons on the identity boxes signify?

They are membership levels. One button is a new member, up to 5 buttons which is over 1000 posts.

However, if you have paid a subscription you are automatically given four buttons.

Administrators automatically have five buttons.

I may change this in time to make it more obvious.

Just reading the previous posts and was interested in the 'buttons' if they are solid colours as opposed to clear buttons, does that mean how many a member has.  I read that a subscriber starts with four buttons.  I'm not sure if mine are right, I paid my sub but wonder if it hasn't been tied with my name?

When I post a reply it then takes me out of the thread.. is this how it works or is it because I'm using an iPad?

Just another question ... is everyone's post under their avatar?.. it takes a lot of space and scrolling... could the post be next to the avatar and not under it?

Hello there!

The first point, that should not happen. I have adjusted the settings but I will double check they have applied to all suers.

The second point, this is an iPad only issue and we're aware of it but have not yet managed to fix it. Shortly you will find that your avatar sits to the side, same as desktop.

We have a lot of devices and browsers to get through with testing so please bear with us for the next few weeks.

The posts go underneath each avatar on my Android phone too, but there wouldn't be room for them to be side by side really, so I guess this is correct?

This has started happening to me too.  Yesterday the posts were next to the avatar.  I was assuming that this was a result of Fran squaring up the pictures and that it would get sorted when she has time.

Five solids = administrator.

Clear buttons are for subscribers :)

I hope this is the right place but wondered if there was a like button next to a post.  I always want to like a post but don't always feel the need to write a reply, but it is nice for me to acknowledge all the help I get.  The forum might do this, so apologies if I haven't found it.

I am also not sure if there is a way of when looking at unread topics being able to go to the latest replies rather than the beginning.

This is all beyond my tech skills so I don't know what is and isn't possible, but I really appreciated all the work you are doing.

A small point, but might it not be possible to have members' location under their name in the avatar space.  I replied Marniesews looking for a large format printer, but had to go into her profile to find out where she is located.

Oops, I have just noticed that location is now in the avatar space.  Need new glasses.

Hi, The site is great and I'm really enjoying using it. Just a couple of little things I'm not sure of. It's probably just me doing something wrong, but some of the headers in the black strip at the top of the screen don't seem to do anything. I'm usually using an iPad. Profile, My messages, Calendar and Members are the ones I can't get to work.
Also is there an explanation somewhere of how to use the hearts, icons , thumbs up etc that appear on the avatar blocks?  Have been looking around , but can't find anything- maybe it's just self explanatory!   :|

Can't help with the black strip but if you click on the thumbs up on someone else's  post it increases the heart number

Thanks Vege and Francesca! Thought it would be obvious. My lack of social media education is showing : never been on FB or anything similar, so don't know these things. Was experimenting and ended up on your blog, Francesca, which was good to read and well done for being photo'd in your very organised sewing room. Don't think I'd want anyone to see mine until I'd had a good tidy :fabric: :thread: :snip: :drink: :fabric:

Member location has disappeared from the 'avatar area'.  I thought my screen colours had something to do with it, but removed it temporarily and don't see it.

The member location was throwing up an awful lot of errors (in the server logs that we see) so Fran has temporarily disabled them. We noticed these whilst searching for errors that may have been causing the server outages.

General consensus seems to be that Fran is spot on with the direction she is taking the theme, but she has described modifying the code to be like "knitting spaghetti"  :D

(It now appears that the server problems were caused by the hosting company, not our site.)

I think we have finally stopped the "2777" script error from appearing randomly at the top of the page. Last time I said this it was back within 5 minutes - but I haven't seen it for about 24hrs now.

Much as I hate to say it .... please tell me if you see it!

Spotted again I'm afraid.

What are people's thoughts on the gallery? Would you like more categories adding? Perhaps to match the categories in The Emporia?

I think a few categories would be useful.
Perhaps clothing, household, patchwork and quilting, toys

Two options.

The green box Actions > Modify will bring up a full editor

The cream coloured box with the yellow pencil in the bottom right near your post will allow you to quick-edit.

Firefox did an update today and later when I went to log in on here it was giving me an insecure password warning (not the one I'd chosen but to do with this site.) iE It wasn't a case of me having a weak one. Although it said it wasn't recommended I logged in anyway ... as I have a different password for all the sites I'm on ... but also I needed to to let you know.

https://support.mozilla.org/t5/Protect-your-privacy/Insecure-password-warning-in-Firefox/ta-p/27861

Incidently it was aso teling me the same for 'Stitches Guild Reloaded'

For all I know lots of others as well, haven't tried any others yet. Perhaps Firefox is getting extra vigilent.

The whole of the internet is moving towards https. http is "Hyper Text Transfer Protocol" which is the protocol (language) that has been used for web browsing since the world wide web was created. Https is the secure version where your data (including passwords) is encrypted (scrambled). Generally modern web browsers (Chrome, Safari, IE, Edge etc) show a green padlock in the address bar when you are connected to a trusted https site (trusted insofar as their encryption certificate is known to be good). They are now starting to show a warning if the site is not using https, which is what you are seeing Lantana.

You should never enter your card details or any sensitive information into a non trusted site.

For sites like ours and many others the risk is very small. Somebody could tap into our traffic and extract passwords. The CIA or GCHQ could park outside your house and snoop on your Wifi. The risk is greater if you use free and open wifi in public places, because you don't know who else is connected to that wifi network and what they might be snooping on.

My personal opinion is that a sewing forum is unlikely to attract the attention of serious hackers. The trouble we and all forums have is people try to get in so they can use the email server to send spam. That is an age old problem (and why we don't do automatic activation of new accounts)

The best thing you can do on the internet is use strong passwords and (excuse me for shouting) DON'T USE THE SAME PASSWORD ON MULTIPLE SITES!

However, we don't want to put people off when they find us with messages that are worrying, and are therefore looking into moving to https. It requires us to apply for an encryption certificate and once issued we have to apply it to our domain - so it's not something we can just switch on.

In the meantime please don't worry. I'm happily here and not concerned about my security. The Google advice on this issue is here (https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95617?visit_id=1-636246969228147728-2118273961&p=ui_security_indicator&rd=1).

Hope that helps

Andy

Thankyou for such a full reply Andy. It was very interesting (had never occured to me to wonder what http stood for!) and much appreciated. Anyway I've never used the same password for any site and it was well drilled into me at work to use strong ones. In fact it's a testomony to how pleased I was to find this site that I thought of a password and joined right away .... I've many forums I visit but have never joined because of the bother of thinking of YET ANOTHER password!

No I don't suppose the powers that be would be interested in a sewing forum unless we all started sewing political banners!

Off on a different suggestion here - probably just for those using a laptop for TSP as it doesn't seem as big a deal on the phone when scrolling is second nature.

It's the spread of messages on the screen, or rather single messages. I have a fairly standard sized screen (15.6") and if I scale it down it goes down in width as well as height so it's not that helpful for text legibility. The amount of white space and gaps between the messages add to this. Is it because this layout is more tailored to the portrait orientation of a phone which I know many people will be using?

I can mostly only see one message at a time and find this significantly reduces the flow of reading through a thread in comparison to the other forums I've been using recently. Quite possibly on those the balance of best fit for phone & laptop is reversed as I always end up turning it to landscape to read. It's not a biggie right now of course but perhaps something that might be considered when all the nuts and bolts issues have been sorted and you're reviewing this type of general improvement option.

I could list all the things I do like here - which wouldn't be difficult at all. Lots of thought and listening to ideas have clearly gone into it already.   :)

Need we worry about this at this stage?  There isn't an awful lot in there just now and so long as entry is limited to subscribers, I don't see the need.  I don't mind scrolling through all and sundry and will only click on that which interests me.

Thank UR.

Hmmm, interesting one Marnie. The theme was chosen because of its clarity and look across a range of devices, but as I primarily use a laptop I see your point. Nothing springs to mind that you can do to keep this theme with different scaling - that's one for Fran.

Stichers guild reloaded uses the same forum software as us, but have stuck with the default SMF theme. If you prefer that look you can change by going to your profile / modify profile / look and layout / - our theme is called Reseller, click on change and choose curve.

I believe this is caused by an issue with the stylesheet for a certain width that's in-between mobile and a largish desktop. I promise I will get round to it at some point, but it's getting to the stage that we need to rebuild a lot of the code because the original source we're using doesn't have the best code for adaptability. So it's a few hours work (that I promise I will get round to!)

I've changed my theme to Curve, as suggested, which has helped too so that's fine for now and I know you'll get around to it when you've dealt with much more essential stuff. In the main, it's aesthetics rather than function.

Thank you.  :)

I must say the only thing I miss my ex for is his computer expertise .... having to deal with all these techy problems is a real pain. So if 'my ship comes home' anytime soon I'd be happy to pay you a large fee for your in house tech expert to come to my house and sort ALL my computer/modern technology  stuff out! You could come as well (for an even larger fee) and help sort the sewing room while he gets on with it in peace!  <3

Hi Samantha

we have looked at mobile apps and the best appears to be tapatalk. However it is quite expensive and you get stuck with their advertising. At the moment we have decided to stay as we are, with a theme that works reasonably well on mobiles. We will keep it under review - but welcome anybody's view if you think this needs changing.

Hope that helps, Andy

If you choose "Notify" then these threads will be added to your notifications. You can then use "Updated Topics" in the header to look for only updates to those topics.
