But the rectangles that are cut in half to make the triangles were themselves cut from squares - 2 rectangles to a square.

I think.

That's wonderful - she's going to feel really cool and grown up, but it's still perfectly age appropriate!   0_0

In the wardrobe / Re: Trying on...
« on: January 08, 2019, 10:09:35 AM »
I try things on many, many times.  The first try-on will usually be with the pieces just pinned.  The top I'm currently making has got as far as the side and shoulder seams, and I reckon it's been tried on 5 times - I changed the flare of the sides and decided that the darts worked much better pressed upwards.

@Bodgeitandscarper - me too.  It's not so much a matter of fitting a garment as making sure it skims!

Fun with Fabric / Re: Do you wash fabric?
« on: January 06, 2019, 14:04:11 PM »
Again - sometimes!

Dressmaking fabric, usually, and always if it is jersey/knitted fabric.

Quilting fabric, only if it is particularly deeply dyed or if it comes from a company I don't know and I'm wary of it.

As in previous contests, it will be several entries per person. I apologise if that wasn’t clear, I put in in the first post though  :)

Thanks - I couldn't see how that could work with the bonus points for stash used (which entry would it be added to?) but it seems that that problem has been resolved now.   :)

@Manuela Could the points for yardage used be a sort of separate competition?  Just for the glory?  And this competition be about the items themselves?

Now there is a good ideaI like that a lot. Thank you @Bodgeitandscarper. At the end there will be two winners, the biggest destasher (using maths) and the best destasher (by vote).

That seems eminently fair!  Excellent idea Bodge!

Thanks @Marniesews - that's definitely one for the longer term planning!  At some point we will be doing a trip that goes from mid Wales up to the Wirral, and then diagonally across to the Whitby area.  There's soooo much to include in that one!!  :D  Unfortunately it probably won't be this year... although it is possible... hmmm...

@Marniesews - or anyone else - you didn't happen to notice whether they have a wide range of machine embroidery threads in the showroom did you?  I'll be in the area in a few of months and I've never had the opportunity to choose machine embroidery thread in the flesh rather than making best guesses online!

2695
But you can still enter @Acorn,  we all enjoy seeing what others make.
I will put it onto my diary thread - unless it comes out badly!

2696
Please, Lachica and anyone else - just because the competition is not for me does not mean that others shouldn't go ahead and enjoy it.  Clearly it was intended as a large stash-busting exercise from the start, since the rules do talk about bonuses for using lots of fabric.  I missed that - my mistake.

You are entering into the spirit of the contest as it is laid down in the rules.

2697
Not really - the thing I'm about to make just happens to be from my stash (in fact I intended to make it before Christmas).  Anything else I make in January may or may not be from my stash - I don't want to start making things I don't particularly want just because I've had the fabric for a while.

I wouldn't expect to win for a minute, given the competition, but I can't see the point in entering a competition if there's no chance to start with - however, that is just me.  Clearly others are eager to make serious inroads into their stashes, and that's great.  The only reason I said anything was to explain why, having thrown my hat into the ring, I'm taking it back out.

2698
But that's the point - if I make just one item I will only use up at most 3 metres.  If other people are making lots of items they're going to get so many bonus points that it won't be a competition unless I do sew in bulk.

Presumably this also means that it will be one entry per person rather than per item - so, again, making one item isn't really going to cut it.

2699
I'm a bit confused about this now - is the aim of it to make something solely from stash or is it the amount of stash used?

The former is the aim, the latter gives you bonus points.
See the first post of this thread, point 5....  :)

I missed this bit.  I think this rules me out - I vowed not to do anymore competitions that demanded bulk sewing after the 'one pattern three ways' last year!

... I think I'm going to have to choose between a seam down the centre back or a separate flared (but not gathered) peplum at the back.
That decision became a lot easier when I realised that my pattern has a seam up the centre back!!  (I usually cut it on the fold because I don't need the zip that the seam accommodates.)   :D

Main body pieces are now cut out.  Sleeves can be cut according to the cloth!
