Technical Help / Ideas for saving my shorts?
« on: February 01, 2021, 15:35:38 PM »
Hello!

I made my first shorts last summer, with waistband and fly and I was super happy with them. I used a lovely soft chambery fabric.

After a few wears, the fabric send to be deteriorating at the back darts - the stitches seem to be straining against the weave of the fabric and I think the back seam will follow   :boohoo:

I would love an opinion on how to fix and also should I have done something different?

I used a size 2 straight stitch and I thought this fabric was strong despite its soft texture. The pinkish line you can see was my dart line

Technical Help / Pattern matching...with a bust dart
« on: August 19, 2019, 21:53:07 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have drafted my first pattern for a shift dress with a bust dart on the front, back darts on the back. Also the first time I have used a pattern to be matched - very wide bands. I took ages to cut the back and front perfectly, sewn the shoulders with a combined facing then came to do the sides and...of course the bust dart causes the stripes below the bust to not line up, dur.

Thinking...could I cut the back piece and sew it back together taking out the 5cm so the front and back now match?

Or sew a horizontal fold all the way along the back to the same effect

Will it look weird?

(I will unpick my back darts first and redo them)

Any suggestions?

Will post a photo tomorrow if what I say is not clear

Hi, I'm new... / Hello Bonjour Gday
« on: August 15, 2019, 13:12:56 PM »
Hello and thanks for letting me join :)

I am a self-taught sewer using my mum's 1984 Brother sewing machine which I love. I started out making home furnishings from recycled fabrics for our house renovation in France about 6 years ago.  I decided to try garment making a few years back when I basically had a melt down in a high street shop changing room because nothing fit!

I have since learnt that of course patterns don't fit as standard either and have become quite fascinated by garment construction and now dabbling with pattern drafting. I also have a HUGE fabric stash which my husband encourages to grow by taking me to fabulous fabric shops whenever we visit cities and I am determined to turn it into a fabulous wardrobe of creations.

Having stalked this forum for a while, just reading and learning, I thought it's about time I join.

Currently, I am making a simple shift dress from my first pattern draft in a one off piece of fabric from Sri Lanka which I am procrastinating cutting! And just about to start my second knitting project ( first one took 10 months...)

Thanks for having me  :sew: :meow: :)
