Hi Guys,
Ive joined this quiltalongathon (https://www.facebook.com/groups/303534777092206/?ref=group_header)for a bit of fun from August 1st til Halloween ....
Foundation paper piecing is definitely involved but it looks like fun ... and who knows I might go seriously off piste and applique!!
Anyone care to join in?
-
Looks interesting but I wouldn't touch FPP with a bargepole ....... work of
-
Fancy it @rubywishes ????
-
@Iminei , Mmmmm, the theme doesn't really grab me Im so I think I'll pass. But thanks for thinking of me sweetpea. And I've just been given this book of patterns which has me "all aquiver"......love the idea of fpp cushions so they're next on the list after I finish my kitty wall hanging and get the Tiger fpp organised.
-
I think i saw that book at the do I went to on Saturday ... Do you remember it @Puzzler ???
It was for sale for the grand price of £2 ... slashed to half price, £1, as it was the last day of the sale !
OK Hon, Looking forward to seeing your Tiger!

NO! :o My daughter paid AUS$39.00 for it over here!!
-
Nooooo .... relax!!! it would've cost that much to get it to you!!!!
-
I don’t remember seeing that particular book. The ones they had on offer seemed pretty dated for the most part.
-
I thought I did, yes, most of them were pretty old fashioned and well used.
-
I love FPP and would like to join a Quiltalongathon, but the photo on FB doesn't really float my boat so I'll have to wait until I see something I fancy. Then I'll definitely join in. :)
-
Well I joined this but the organizer and I have had a falling out.
She kept removing my post linking to my album of fabrics.
I asked her why and apparently I'm not allowed to use charms in my quilt!
I told her that she probably wouldnt like me appliqueing many of the blocks either and then told her as she seemed to be restricting my freedom of expression, I was ... as the Dragons say ...out!
Im hoping for a refund for the patterns I bought but am not holding out much hope.
-
Not allowed to use charms? Why would it matter so much to her? Why be so strict?
She needs a :fish:
Sandra.
xxx
-
Yeah!! :fish: :fish: :fish: :fish: :fish:
-
If she's dictating what you can and can't do I hope she's paying for all the materials too!
:fish: :fish: :fish: indeed!
-
Not getting a refund as they are nothing to do with the QALAT ... no matter ... anyone want a paper pieced Spider pattern ????
I shall still make a halloween themed quilt ... to my own design ... who fancies joining me ...
no rules, just suggestions for blocks and a lorra lorra pics!
-
What business is it of hers what you put on it?
Just don't tell her. :[
-
Well as I have been excommunicated by the Witchfinder General of the Epic Halloween Quiltalongathon ....
I have decided, as I already bought the patterns and some truly awesome fabrics that I will continue on in Iminei Jones's Awesome Halloweenasreamaquiltalongathon.
I will be posting my progress in my ALBUM
https://photos.app.goo.gl/HPgZwk8fqf5Lvsrq7
which everyone is free to look at with the first pictures being my newly acquired fabrics and
Shock!
Horror!!
Probe!!!
the charms I wish to add to my quilt which caused me to be excommunicated from the original group in the first place !!!!!
Although the rules of that group are ....
1, Be Kind and Courteous
We're all in this together to create a beautiful project . Treating everyone with respect and kindness is required.
2
No Promotions or Spam
Give more than you take to this group. Self-promotion, shop promotion, spam and links aren't allowed.
There was apparently a third, unwritten rule of the Group
3.
Thou must not deviate from the plan and use charms!
I was told in no uncertain terms I couldn't use 'jewellery', as the Gropenfuhrer phrased it, in my quilt.
Well I am going to ..... as its my quilt!
And as this is now my own lil group, albeit of one, I will be able to let you know what and where the fabrics came from too ....
Yet again I find myself in a quilting group of One.... but please feel free to join me if you wish,
-
Some creators really do have a stick up their arse. I remember a knitting pattern designer decreeing that you couldn't knit her pattern in a different yarn from the one it was intended for :o
I like the pattern very much, Spooky Queen that I am.
-
Go girl.
How are these people going to know what the finished project looks like unless you post a picture?
Keep calm, keep quiet and do your own thing, most of all enjoy.
-
So I tried the paper pieced spider .... hmmmm ....
Well I wasted a lot of time and too much fabric and decided that I enjoy sewing and am not going to turn this into a chore ... so binned it and voila a lil time later I have a 9 1/2" appliqued (and padded ... get me, breaking ALLLLLL the rules) spider block ... He's even got hairy legs!

Love it! :loveit:
-
Hi is gorgeous, a great start for your quilt
-
Tsk, tsk @Iminei. You are such a rebel 0_0 Spider looks fab!
-
Spider looks great :) you break as many rules as you want Iminei!
-
He's lovely and I think looks better than he would FPPd. Are there rules about padding applique? Clever choice of background too.
-
Thx Girls ... I love you xxx
-
Great spider @Iminei I adore them! It looks wonderful/ Looking forward to seeing this in progress :) :vintage:
-
I'm loving this already. It's going to be fabulous when it's all done.
Bit jealous of your spider. He's wonderful. <3

I remember a knitting pattern designer decreeing that you couldn't knit her pattern in a different yarn from the one it was intended for :o
Even the yarn manufacturer's patterns don't say that, just that they won't take any responsibility if it all goes pear shaped because a different yarn was used.
-
Halloween stuff isn't really to my taste, but what the heck - if you want charms and bling and other 'jewellery' on it go for it. Patterns are for guidance, that's all.
-
Love, love, love the spider - that group doesn't know what they are missing! Similar to Brenda, Halloween isn't really my thing, but I'm very much looking forward to what you are creating here.
-
They have thrown you or of that project because you want to use charms?? :o And they do not give you a refund????? :S -<
How stubborn people can be????????????
But your reaction is great Iminei ;) And you spider block is much more better than theirs!!! :loveit:
Keep going!!!! <3
-
Your spider is fabulous and your resolve even moreso! :toast: My second glass of red tonight is in your honour! :toast:
-
She hasnt thrown me out per se ....
just turned off my ability to post anything within the group because I've been such a bad, bad girl!
I bought the spider pattern, most of the rest are free, but that was from the person who first ran the pattern ... this girl has decided she is Lord of all she surveys but there doesn't seem to be much guidance from her ... as the complete pattern is already out there people are, as people do, jumping ahead and making blocks ... like me!
There is an absolutely glorious Ring of Coffins pattern for a couple of £ ... that is divine! Based on Dresden Plates ?
-
There is an absolutely glorious Ring of Coffins pattern for a couple of £ ... that is divine! Based on Dresden Plates ?
If it's based on Dresden plates then you should be able to reverse-engineer it. Even without seeing it I'm pretty sure it will only be down to the shape of the outside petals and probably cutting the inside end of the petals down so that each one is coffin shaped.
Just draw one of those petals, use a protractor or a wedge ruler to get the angle accurate, add the quarter inch seam allowance all round and that's it. Use two standard hexagonal pencils taped together, use one to trace the stitchig line and the other will automatically draw the cutting line.

Just wish I had some 'interesting' faces to put inside!
They suggest sewing them onto cardboard templates ... ok ... but how do you remove the cardboard afterwards????

Just wish I had some 'interesting' faces to put inside!

I would do it like EPP Iminei. They have obviously thread basted theirs but I would glue it - sewline glue works the best if you have it. Otherwise any cheap washable Pritt stick will be fine.
Those faces have all come from the Alexander Henry fabric range. I love the quirkiness of their fabrics and have often been tempted to buy them but have refrained as I couldn’t think of a use for them.
-
But how do you get the cardboard template out after sewing/glueing the shapes down?
-
If it's a wall hanging leaving the card in will probably leave the 'coffins' looking more boxlike, but if it's a quilt to be used conventionally use paper so that you can tear it out before making the sandwich.
-
Back in the dim and distant past I seem to remember my pal sewing around wee pieces of paper but not 'to' them. She sort of folded the fabric over the back and stitched the corners to hold it until she had joined the bits together.
The paper template then just slipped out and was reusable.
-
That's how I do EPP
-
I have come to a realisation and a decision ....
1) I LOATHE foundation paper piecing ... Its messy, its wasteful and its tedious! 3 things which have led to me deciding that
2) I will applique the rest of this quilt.
This is the last (partly) paper pieced block I shall make in this quilt

Frustrated by the mess, time and waste I appliqued the stopper and again I have padded the potion ... I think I will continue to do that!

Oh Iminei, I can understand you some much :toast: I have tried PP once and never did it again :S But all your blocks are wonderful !!! The background fabric of your pot is FANTASTIC for this Halloweenquilt!!! 0_0 0_0
Just continue with that, it will be gorgeous!!! :flower:
-
This is going to look fantastic :loveit:
-
In terms of removing the paper from EPP quilts you just rip them out - this is why flienks easiest! If seen in you have to snip the basting stitches then pull it yada yada - boring and hard work!
I love FPP my profile pic is about 60” square and all FPP but it does tend to use more fabric than applique.
I was going to suggest googling Harry Potter book shelf quilts for more free FPP patterns that might be suitable but maybe not
-
@Iminei this was on another board I am a member of. I saw it and thought of you!

Wow, how big is the quilt going to be? I wish I had your flair.
-
I think its planning on being 48" x 60" ...
Those blocks will be 6 1/2" sq, and 6 1/2" x 9 1/2" (x 2) and 6 1/2" x 12 1/2".
Im a bit uncertain how to make the coffins ??? :S so skipped that block and spent the weekend making these in its place ...
Can anyone out there give me some pointers?
-
They are fantastic - and you are so clever with the fabrics, especially for the potions!!! :loveit:
BTW Your table runner was being greatly admired by our visitors yesterday!
-
It just keeps getting better. :loveit: As Acorn says...the potions fabrics are spot-on.
Sandra.

Cut the petals with regular 1/4 inch seam allowances and stitch them together conventionally and press, then applique the 'flower' to the base fabric. The EPP for the centre and the faces.
-
If you don't want to make the Dresden plate style then YouTube search Halloween Coffin Block - it brings up a tut, sorry no link.

@Iminei one link I found is coffin block (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOAtSXYyL1M)

Which if you squish them together sort of fit .. What went wrong and mote importantly ...
WHAT do I do next ???
-
The reason it's gone wrong is accuracy - or rather lack of.
It's designed with 16 coffins, so each of them, if the sides were extended to the centre of the ring would end with a point of 22.5 degrees. Your coffins probably have 21.5 or 22 degrees.
The way to correct it is to shave off a minute wedge from each side - about two threads at the wide end tapering to nothing, or you might be able to just wrap the fabric around the papers again but with slightly less tension on the wide end.
Before you do that though, are you sure that you couldn't just join the 16 pieces together and steam press the life out of it (pun not intended!)?
-
I will try and sew it together as is with the extra one in ???? and press the hell out of it as you say.
I printed the templates onto freezer paper but then the printer started having a hissy fit so I then traced them ... but if you cut out slightly off it will always end up slightly off I suppose ... but I like them and enjoyed the process ... but then the hand-sewing didnt have to be perfect ... so slip-stitching next ??? :S
-
Ok, it doesnt fit with or without the extra one ... Mmmmmnnnnnn

I want something in the middle too, I think ... Thinking hats on!

-
Very clever - I like it! :ninja:
-
Should your 5 o'clock position coffin be the other side of the green one, to maintain the pattern?
-
Pattern ??? You think I'm following a pattern ???? hahahahahahhaaha
(picks herself off the floor and brushes the threads out of her hair)
Nope, no pattern, I would like more occupants but its not the sort of fabric I have in my stash ... these came from the one piece of Halloween fabric I bought at FOQ that did have 'faces'.
If any of you have got any bits of fabric with suitable occupants ... (I'm not looking for wacky witches if you know what I mean) measuring around 1 1/2" x 2" I would be very grateful if you could send it Dorsetwards .... Although the ring is now sewn on ..... (apart from the errant one, still wondering what to do there) I can still add occupants ....
Starts thinking of printing a pic of he that wont be named onto a piece of photofabric ...hmmmmmm
-
What do we think about this ??/

Love it to bits
-
Ooh that is so much better - it looks intentional! Great piece of fabric...
-
That's great, really goes with the theme :)
-
Loooooove it.

I have just edited the title because it was breaking the display on my phone... hope nobody minds... ;)
-
Not fabric RJR ... I printed an image from google onto photo fabric!!!

Not fabric RJR ... I printed an image from google onto photo fabric!!!
Oh wow now I am even more impressed!! Always wanted to try that but never been brave enough...
-
Not fabric RJR ... I printed an image from google onto photo fabric!!!
I wondered where that had come from - nice job (thumbs up) :)
-
Well done that look great
-
Wow, that's fabulous! You can buy photo fabric? Off to Google it....wait....we no longer have a colour printer...AHHHH noooo.
-
So King Tut is now stitched in place and the block is complete, it will measure 18 1/2", the largest single block, so will have only about an inch around the edge of the furthest coffin ...

So all well and good on the ring of coffins score (tho I am still looking for occupants if you have any that need interring Gals, just need enough fabric around the face to wrap around the freezer paper window template comfortably )
But yesterday, Puzzler came over and we had a playday ... She bought a project of hers and I dillydallied with another spider, starting an entirely new quilt ...(Yes really! and Yes, I know!) but decided on building my haunted house block ..... I even for a brief mad second or three looked at the PP destructions before sanity regained its grip and off I went!
Ta Dah! My haunted house ... measuring about 9 1/2" x 12 1/2"

Loving all the blocks so far Iminei.

 Trees part of the fabric @Celia
-
Fabulous @Iminei - I love them all and especially the spider and the haunted house! :)
-
Love the blocks, and that haunted house is sooooooo cute :loveit:
-
This is going to be fabulous, I love the king tut and the haunted house is inspired. Methinks that this is going to be somewhat better than the original "Quiltalongathon" :)

That’s great fabric for your block and you have made the best of it.

One lonely lil barn bat block ... 6 1/2"
Hes's pieced (YAY) and I used gash fabrics, for this practice block.
The background fabric was a stark white so I tea dyed it ... just in case he make the grade and remains in the finished quilt.

No picky again @Iminei

Im gradually understanding how to put this block together so you have mistakes up there as well, but am enjoying it very much.
Its Pieced ...YAY ... and I did wonder about doing a one off BOM of this in preparation for Halloween in a month or so's time.
What I do understand is that a black bat on a dark background, no matter how beautiful a blue, purple or whatever coloured fabric, will not show up ... so I changed one to a grey bat ... What do you think ...likey??? No likey???
Should I do a few more grey ???
and of course there is always one rebel!!!!

Wow @Iminei they are great :) I can't see how you did that? >:) :vintage:

Well my part was extremely important @Lilian ..
Firstly I bought the design, then I threaded the machine and then, and this bit is crucial .. you might like to note it down,
I pressed a button!
-
So, does it feel like your work ( I always wonder that about having something longarmed )?
Does it feel like you have just used patterned fabric or do you feel you had input?

I realised that I was soon going to run out of my sort of background fabric after googling to no avail, I remember I'd got if from a FOQ which of course I always brag about so found the retailer and placed an order on Sunday.

It arrived this morning all the way from Dutchland, beautifully packaged in a box and I was all happy
BUT I have just opened it to find one piece is completely wrong! The bit I needed was correct but much darker and I added another metre of something that looked similar and they sent something completely different and totally wrong ...
HELP ... Ive FBed them but cant quote a code as all the codes are the same on the site ??!!!
Is there a way I can lighten the dark fabric ?

Just had a call from the lady from Creatotaal whos currently at a show in Holland and on her lunchbreak!
She apologised and said they have a lighter version of the script (Hooray) and she will send me pics of the other fabrics in the range for me to choose the correct additional one. She also said she would send me money for the postage for the return of the incorrect fabrics ...
All in all, despite the mix up, the service has been fab .. I ordered on the 31st, it arrived in DDD this morning from Dutchland .. After contacting them through FB they get back to me within 4 hours and as she is at a show, selling, that is pretty damned good!
Lets hope we can sort this out!

@Iminei I remember being agog at the Tut fabric when you posted the coffin block on the today thread but how in the Hallowe'en did I totally miss this multi page Hallowe'en quiltalongathon thread? How!!! :scream: Your block are just marvelous. Totally marvelous.
Feeling inspired. This is all quite lovely in a ghoulish and ghastly fashion. I have one Hallowe'en quilt basted, just needs quilting and binding, two tops finished but languishing and two more, both Drunkards Path, mostly put together. One is strictly orange and black with a touch of white. Very striking.
