And the fabric can be more or less anything stretchy?

How much fabric does the longer version use?

As requested, here are a few more pictures of the bag baby elephant.

Hanging from door, with trunky

Same spot, but Trunky has gone to find his his scissors:

I made a slouchy handbag. The fronts (see second photo) and back are made from the black linen beaded tunic and the piping and strap from the M&S top. Lining is from stash.

It is this shape because it is made of the  pieces that were left after I had cut a short sleeve for my top out of the long sleeve of the tunic.

The front uses the V neck of the tunic, made into a pocket, which is big enough to hold a baby elephant:

Or more sensibly a mask and hand sanitizer.  I have put a zipped pocket inside for credit cards, a pocket for a phone and a loop with a thingie to clip keys to. The bag itself has a magnetic clasp.

Hi, I'm new... / Re: I haven’t even bought a needle yet....

I vaguely remember that a work colleague got use of a machine where his boat was moored to mend something heavy duty in his boat. My memory is a bit hazy but I think it might have been a canopy and the machine borrowed from the chandlery.

I am quite pleased with this.

I need to decide how to finish the neckline, which may mean changing the edging if the sleeves (currently using the original hem)

So I am going to combine this:

With this, which I posted earlier:

to create some type of t shirt. Thus has so far involved a lot of thinking and no sewing.

Access All Accessories / Re: Sewing with leather

I would look for a pattern that has also been designed as suitable for PU (vinyl) or cork. These materials are thicker than fabric and so some patterns may not be suitable. They also don’t need to be hemmed and turned in the same way and you can (but don’t have to) have raw edges

Indeed.  I've made a few small shoulder bags out of both fabric, and out of PVC.  The PVC ones are noticeably smaller than the fabric ones.  I'd make up a PVC version of your preferred pattern before cutting into your leather.

Whatever does this machine do that makes it worth all that cash?  Am I right in thinking that it's a sewing and embroidery machine combined?

55
I've got my pattern pieces together and realise that I don't quite have enough fabric to do what I had intended to do.  I could probably find another black item to cut up; but really need to decide what kind of top this is to be; I could add black velvet and make it an evening top, or plain cotton and let it be more of a day-time outfit.

Decisions, decisions.

There's a size THIRTY !!!! ???????   :faints:

I've just double-checked, the label says "30" and "Euro 58".

I have this.  Bought some years ago from a charity shop for £3.99, with, I think the intention of making it a bit smaller and using it as a beach cover up.  It's a size 30, I'm a size 12 on top, it's enormous on me, too enormous to just take a few seams in, and the v-neck comes down past my clevage.  Plus the beading and embroidery makes it too heavy for wearing in the heat.

I think there is enough fabric to re-make it into a better fitting short sleeved top, and a small bag as well.  I hope that counts.

Technical Help / Re: How to pattern match perfectly?
« on: September 19, 2020, 19:29:04 PM »
WHen I pattern match I cut piece one, press the SA, then match on the fabric. Make marks, add sa and then cut out. Pre sewing rematch the pressed seam piece, mark the top and bottom, find those mark on the reverse, draw a line to follow, true up the pieces so sa matches perfectly and then stitch with along the line.

Thus is how I do it, with additional muttering under my breath.

I too would go for two seams, rather than one. You could also add some matching ribbon (or same fabric piping) to cover the seam.

In the wardrobe / Re: The Joy of wearing self sewn garments

I don't even have to wear them.  I have a drawer full of almost all home made tops (the exceptions being half a dozen gig t-shirts), all nicely folded up and divided up using Ikea Shrubb organisers.  It gives me a great thrill every time I open it, partly because they are all unique, and partly because it's probably the only part of the house that is perfectly organised!

A bit of a 'do' / Re: Wedding dress too short

It all sounds a bit of a last minute rush to get the job done and get the money in the till before their relocation.
Or going out of business.
