A Good Yarn / Knitting Mitts
« on: December 21, 2021, 13:00:27 PM »
I decided it was time to knit a pair of mitts for myself. I love to wear them over thin gloves to keep my hand super warm when out and about.

The yarn is Sugar Bush Bliss. They say it is a #2 weight but knits more like a #3 (DK) weight when you look at needle size and stitch/inch. The yarn is lovely and soft which is making for a nice knit.

The pattern I am using is a free pattern from Tin Can Knits of which I have knit a pair of mittens for DGS years ago. I am following along with Purl Together's Sloth Series to learn any new tricks when knitting these mittens.

I have the cuff of the first mitten knit and it fits me beautifully. I am making the largest size in DK yarn.

I am now ready to switch to the larger needles and knit 4 rounds before I start the thumb gusset. I am thinking about starting the 2nd cuff but may wait. I'm keeping track of the rows so both mitts have the same number of rows for each part.

Are you thinking of knitting mitts this winter. If so please feel free to join in.

A Good Yarn / Socks - Top Down or Toe Up
« on: September 07, 2021, 17:21:34 PM »
I've knit socks but gave up 2 years ago struggling with picking up stitches for the gusset and joining to the front stitches without a hole showing up that needed darning. I also got into doing a lot of other knitting that took over life and I've been clawing back so I can knit what I want to knit.

Over a year ago I found the Sloth Series when looking for information on how to knit the Hermoine's Every Day socks. This is one lady's take on knitting socks using her tried and true techniques and the pattern from Hermoine's Every Day socks. I didn't have time to knit the socks until mid August of this year.

As this is an old knit along, I followed along on my own. I listened to her video, stopped and knit along, and then listened some more. A lot of questions I had were answered. I had asked these questions at a group where some advanced knitters were helping people. They couldn't answer my questions.

These socks were a total success for me. I felt so good when I finished them. From casting on to finishing the toe, I learned so much.

I am now knitting another pair of socks so we can give DD 2 pairs of hand knit socks for Christmas.

I hope it is okay for me to start this thread. I'm ready to begin, not as a contest but as a way to be accountable to sew down the stash.

My goal this year is to sew 50 meters or more from the stash. My first smaller goal is to sew Christmas fabrics in January. I am ready to begin cutting out today. I can't sew until I get my machines back from being serviced on Friday or Saturday.

Ann was quicker than me, so I added a title post to hers:)

I'd recommend if you want to take this seriously, defining your goal statement in a post here, and keeping track of your numbers either in a spreadsheet or in your signature. If you want to copy my signature, here is the code, just copy & paste it into the "signature" field on "Profile > Forum profile"

A Good Yarn / Knitting For The Dolls
« on: May 22, 2019, 10:23:06 AM »
I do quite a bit of knitting and love to knit for the dolls. I just finished this pattern the other day.

I love how the pattern fits the doll and I love the color (Mallard Teal). The yarn is Paton's DK wool and was a delight to knit.

I also knit a long scarf out of acrylic and wound it around the doll's neck. The next time I knit it, I'll make it another 25 rows longer.

I'm pleased with the results of this pattern.

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Ann's Sewing Room (Third Try)
« on: May 19, 2019, 21:43:31 PM »
We moved across Canada from BC to Nova Scotia 18 months ago. We bought a newer home that had a huge bedroom in the basement. That room became my sewing room. I had plenty of room to set up the sewing room as it is 17'x25'. One year into sewing in the room, we took it apart and painted it a pale grey. The brown color on the walls were too dark and sucking all the light out of the room. It brightened up the room and we were ready to start painting the trim and put it on. We arrived home on Apr. 3 to a flooded basement. Plans thwarted as we had to make an insurance claim and live with our possession taking up all our space in the house and garage.

Yesterday, I cleaned the sewing room, put on the door handles, light switch covers and washed the floor. Other than needing the plug-ins put back in, I'm waiting for a crew to put everything back into the room. I did dig around in the garage and under the guest bed for bins that I could put into the closet.

The sewing room has been painted light grey and it has white trim. We kept it simple so it will be easy to clean. The flooring is long plank vinyl with cork backing. We paid extra to have that put in and love it. I'm thinking that will all the white furniture I own, my splash of color will be blue.

The closet with the doors closed and before I put the handles on.

Closet with shelf full of bins.

I am putting a cube on legs in the closet for more storage. The top can hold trays of projects to be sewn.

The nook in the room where I will have two desks. One is an antique that is for display. The other desk (new as the one I had was water damaged) is where I do jewelry, pattern drafting, and internet searches.

I will add more pictures once the room has been set up. I'm looking forward to sewing once again in my domain.

Dolls and Toys / Sewing For Dolls
« on: May 16, 2019, 16:39:11 PM »
I sew for both American Girl and Gotz Happy Kids and enjoy the process. I also test patterns for designers and love doing that.

The latest pattern I tested was a fun one. A wedding dress from 1978. I did my own thing when it came to embellishing it and had a blast doing it. The lace edging around the bottom of the dress is sewn on by hand. The rest of the fabric from the trim was used to make the cape. I had a great time but this dress did take me about 15 hours to make.

Once my sewing room is set up, I am going to do a couple of dresses and will be knitting items to go with them.

Hi, I'm new... / Greetings
« on: May 16, 2019, 12:18:53 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I am a fellow sewist from Nova Scotia Canada. I have been sewing for over 50 years, probably closer to 60 years. I found my way here when @Manuela was mentioned as being a moderator on another forum. Then I saw other familiar names when I popped over here to have a look. Thank you for accepting me and I look forward to connecting with old friends and meeting new people.

I sew a lot of items for dolls as I am a tester for designers. I also knit and test patterns also. I will continue to do that. I also love to sew craft items and hope to start sewing clothes for myself. My sewing is basically on hold while our basement is being redone. We came home to water down there after a nasty storm and frozen ground. That was 6 weeks ago.

I'm looking forward to joining into the discussions and sharing what I know and have made.

Once again, thank you for allowing me to be a part of this forum.
