Title: Flour Sack Fabric
Post by: Martin on September 02, 2020, 13:58:36 PM
I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place. Admin, please relocate if necessary...

I'm looking for a fabric to hold flour in big sacks. Nothing fancy, just breathable and, presumably, close-woven to keep the flour inside! I could even use it double layered if necessary.

Any suggestions please? TIA.

Calico?... it’s cheap and cheerful and closely woven.

Definitely a cotton or linen, and calico is a great suggestion

In America, in the 1930s, flour sacks were repurposed for clothing for children. They (the sacks) were then made of patterned cotton, with which women would use to make dresses for themselves.

I'd say calico with a cotton layer. definitely no flour getting out then.

At the risk of being overly obvious, have you done a search for “flour sack fabric”?

I have my grandmother's quilts that were made in the thirties and forties. The print on the flour sacks she used is still clearly visible.
