How do you do it?
-
If you are a subscriber, you can do it direct. For non-subscribers, Lunapic (https://www8.lunapic.com/editor/) is a handy third party tool. I wrote a little tutorial and it has been adopted as a solution by the forum, but I can't find the thread for it at the moment. I'll be back when I have it.
-
@UttaRetch I have my own resizing programme and know how to put the photos on as an attachment but @Manuela has asked that competition entry photos are embedded into the text and that is what I cannot work out how to do.
-
When you have uploaded a photo as an attachment you will see, underneath the name of the file, the words Insert Attachment in blue and in brackets. Click on this and it will put the image into your post at the point where your cursor was.
-
When you write a reply, you can embed a photo link that STARTS with https and ends in either .jpg, .jpeg or .png using the little Mona Lisa icon.
The above picture link reads https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/624/cpsprodpb/5B51/production/_112377332__101604271_afwimixw.jpg and it is this address that I pasted into the photo generating icon.
-
Thanks @Acorn, next question, can I do it once I have posted or do I need to delete the photo and then add it again? I tried the modify button but only seem to be able change the text.
-
Test of attachment upload
-
If you click on the green box that says 'Actions' at the top right of the post, then choose modify, I think* there should be the 'Attachments and other options' link below the posting box, which will allow you to put the picture into the text.
If you click on the pencil and paper icon on the right it will only allow you to make simple changes.
*(I'm not absolutely certain, because I have admin features so I can't properly see what you can!)

LOOK! A GROCERY DELIVERY!!! :faints:
Sorry. I got distracted. What were you saying? ;)

@sewmuchmore and @Acorn, are you certain you understand what @Manuela means by '... embedded into the text'? I have done both an embedded image and an attachment. Perhaps @Manuela can clear up this point.
-
She has asked members to use the 'insert attachment' link previously, but only Manuela will be able to tell us for sure!
-
Hi @sewmuchmore ... Hopefully you will have sorted this by now but here goes...
As subscriber you can attach pics straight from your computer
Click on the + Attachments and other options below the text box
Click on choose file,
This will generally open your pictures folder in your computer, but you can choose documents or other files on your computer
Click on the image you want to insert
Click OPEN in the Pictures Library box that appeared when you clicked on Choose file
There will now be a code where previously it said No File Chosen in the Attach area
Now click in your text box where you want the pic to be so the cursor is flashing
and click on (Insert Attachment 0) (Clear Attachment)
If you want to add more pics (up to 4 per post)
Click on (more attachments)
Restrictions: 4 per post
Crystal or Mud ????

Indeed, and I also added screenshots on how to do it in several threads. I am too tired to do anything like this now. The school has re-opened and I am teaching live and via Zoom at the same time.

Why do my photos come out rotated? When I click on them on my computer they are the right way up, but show rotated in my post.
-
Are you using an ipad? If so, that is the reason - ipads don't know which way is up. There may be other tablets with the same problem, I'm not sure.
Unfortunately I don't think that there is an answer other than editing the picture (ipad owners please speak up if there is one). UttaRetch's tutorial for editing and adding pictures is here. (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,9742.msg167686.html#msg167686)
-
@Penabby: using Lunapic, you need to rotate a sideways image through 90 degrees either to the right or left to get it the correct way up.
-
@Penabby I've inserted several of your pics into your text as I come across them and they always inserted the right way up ... so I wouldn't worry.
-
Ooh - @Iminei I didn't know that happened! 0_0

I wanted to upload a photo from my phone but its not letting me do it. It says its a fatal error, something to do with size maybe?
-
Yep. Please make the photo a LOT smaller.
-
Yep. Please make the photo a LOT smaller.
How can I make it smaller when uploading directly from my phone? (technonumpty alert!)
-
On my Samsung you click on the camera then on the settings gear-wheel thingy. Picture size is there.
Perhaps @Acorn or some other knowledgeable bod could advise what is a good size to choose.
-
The absolute maximum that can be displayed on the forum is 900px wide, but 700px is usually plenty big enough. A lot of images taken by phone cameras are over 4,000px wide.
I'm no expert on phones. If Flobear's suggestion doesn't work try googling your phone's name and 'image resizing' or something similar. If nothing else there are apps that will resize photos for you on your phone.
-
Thanks for that @Acorn i tried finding that info a while ago but couldn’t. Obviously not looking in the right place!
I send photos to myself in yahoo mail and resize them that way.
-
My phone is a bit tempermental and doesn't always ask me which size to send via email. I haven't found a way to reduce the size in settings and should probably dig through the manual.
-

:( It is such a faff to do it that way though and I try to avoid using my email via my phone. I've not posted things because of that and was wondering if there was a quick an easy way. Until I find one that I can just upload straight from my phone, I guess I shall just refrain from posting pics.
-
Agree it’s a bit of a faff. But I usually use my iPad anyway. I can’t find info on the size of the photo so wouldn’t want to upload and make a mess. So this way is safer for me. I ought to have a play and see what I can find. They keep sneaking in updates and I find later that it can do all sorts of new things which had passed me by.
-
The size on my phone says 13mp.
-
Got another tech question:
Attaching a photo, I can click on the button that shows up that attachment embedded in the text. Is there a way to control the size of this embedded picture? (Like, if I use an external photo link I can use the 'length=300' command)
-
The size on my phone says 13mp.
@Lowena I don't even know how you find that out!
-
Please resize the image before uploading it - large images will be resized to a viewable size automatically by the forum, but the whole image will be uploaded to our server, adding to our already very high storage load and slowing everything down.
@Lowena That's the camera quality - it's information about your camera, not a setting. It suggests that your images will be large, because 15mp is a high resolution camera.
-
I resize all my photos with apps before upload here - the lowest res on my android phone and my iPad are still too large.
The iPad app is called Resize it https://apps.apple.com/ie/app/resize-it-image-resize/id844716779
The android app is this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer&hl=en_IE&gl=US
Its easy - you just choose 600 or less for the longest edge, then save and upload. They can also crop and rotate. I've tried other apps but these are my favourites.
-
I rescale my images in Lunapic (https://www4.lunapic.com/editor/).

No @Morzel it won't let you. It just ignores me when I try.
