I was waiting on a delivery of decovil all week and it came today.
I have been at this all day.
-
Very nice, can’t beat a new pattern.
-
Nice job!
-
That's lovely. Something else I'd like to try making.
-
It looks great! And now you have the standard version under your belt you can have a go at all the variations 0_0

What would you recommend.
-
Generally I make the compact accordion (which is almost identical but smaller) as that is my preferred size. Variations I have made include:
- different fastenings (turn locks, purse edges etc)
- piecing the main fabric in different ways. You can piece it however you like as long as the finished piece is the same size as pattern piece
- different materials (cotton, PU, tweed)
- change the flap shape so it is curved instead of straight
- adding a wrist strap
All look good in different ways! My personal favourite is a curved flap in tweed with a bold lining fabric.
-
@RJR_38
Is that the last one you posted in the tweed.
Update: I have just bought the compact according wallet will try it out tomorrow.
-
I love the Compact Accordion Wallet, it’s just the right size for me and when I’m feeling really brave I will have a go with my beautiful purple leather.
I’ve made several in various fabrics and I’ve just done the Flip Clutch in leather just for a change.
-
All you girls who can make such usefull things are soooooo clever!!!
I remember being on holiday visiting Sakar and family and going for a walk round a beautiful lake high in the mountains/hills and seeing a jaw droppingly beautiful bag slung across some girls shoulders and was instantly in live, obviously handmade and gorgeous ..... I pestered HWMNBN to take a pic but he deemed it too creepy to start snapping another girls bum as she walked off!!! -<
But I would love to have the skill to make my own handbag ... at the moment Im just using a big open Provencal rush basket.
(Please note I said HANDmade rather than HOMEmade ... why does Homemade sound less professional than Handmade ???

When you use leather do you still have to use interfacing or decovil.
-
@Iminei Handmade is a word I use for anything sewn or crafted - homemade I use for jams, chutneys and baked goods :)
-
When you use leather do you still have to use interfacing or decovil.
I’ve not used real leather yet - only PU. For PU, Yes to decovil for the stiffness and unless it is the very thin stretchy PU you don’t need interfacing.
One of my fave bag designers is going to be working with leather a lot more this year in her videos and sew alongs so if I find out I will let you know!
(And craftyirish yes my last tweed one was a compact accordian wallet)

@Iminei I know you think you can’t but with your patchwork skills you honestly could make a bag! What type of bag would you like? I am happy to help find a beginners pattern in that style and send you the right interfacing you would need so you don’t have to buy any for your first one. I know you have plenty of fabric... What have you got to lose?
-
@RJR_38 hey,
On your tweed wallet I love the studs you put on it. I bought a little rivet set just before Christmas and me jumping in to fast before looking up about the different size studs and how to use them, I just bought studs that I like the look of thinking I could use them on bags but they where too big. What size do you use and do u put anything in between it.
-

@CraftyIrish this is why I’ve not dared to use my purple leather yet, I am really not sure.
When I made the Flip Clutch I tried to iron on some Decovile light and it crinkled horribly but the leather I want to use is very fine, like a glove leather so will need some support.
I’m thinking I will attach some firm interfacing with either 505 or strips of Wondertape because of course once the wallet is made there is nowhere for the interfacing to go.
Just need to be brave and have a go.
-
@Ellabella
Yeah I have leather there that i took off a section of my couch i was getting rid of and its thick enough. Maybe ill just give it ago see how I get on.
-
@CraftyIrish
In terms of the studs I used - I am still exploring too. Santa was instructed to buy me a rivet press to make things easier as my husbands shift work means there aren't many times of the day I could get away with banging a hammer! Before that I used Chicago screws but always struggled to get them the right length.
The rivets I have bought so far have just been 7mm wide ones- no idea of the stalk length as the bag making groups I am in just seem to sell one length. I have noticed that the rivet press was very good at squeezing them together enough whether I was going through 8 layers or 2.... so maybe you just need to bang yours together more? Sorry I can't be more help as I'm still learning myself!

Really nice, I am just waiting for 25 of the strap bridges to come from China before I start!
-
I couldn't find any of them in Ireland, what website did you order them from.

@Iminei have you given it any more thought? I have seen some lovely tote bags made from orphan blocks
-
Well I started The Compact Accordion wallet on Sunday but didn't get much sleep the night before so didn't get any sewing done yesterday.
I finished it up this morning wish I had some nice studs or even embroidery on the flap.
-
I think it looks great! I don’t often use magnetic clasps but like to use turn locks etc (you can get some gorgeous and unusual ones!) as this adds extra detail without the need for anything else.

Yeah I got some turn locks in the post yesterday.
I have cut out all the fabric and interfacing to make 3 more but realised I had no zippers so had to order a few and also went ahead and order some D rings and swivel clasps to make wrist straps.
Has anyone ever tried the little book cover pattern do you know whats needed for it.
-
I've made one for my sister for Xmas but I want to make a couple more in half term. You need some decovil light (if using cotton) and decovil light from memory.
It is a nice pattern for using up small bits of vinyl [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Too bad I only have decovil heavy there and it was hard enough to find that.
Yours is lovely by the way.
-
@CraftyIrish The only problem with decovil heavy is that it might be hard to turn through - but if you have the patience I am sure it will be do-able. Then just leave the finished product under something heavy to mould to the book.
You don't have to use decovil - and heavier stabiliser would do. What brands do you have over in Ireland? Do you get the American brands like Peltex more than European ones? Pellon peltex 71f would be the alternative I think.
I would look at the websites you can source things from and just look for a heavy interfacing
-
Zippers finally came. :D
Now 2 sew up 3 wallets
-
Finished them wallets

Lovely!
It’s such a sensible size.
-
Those are lovely.

I love those wallets. I am halfway through my first Spencer Ogg pattern - the Worsley Wallet. I hope mine comes out as well as yours.

Well that was my first ever wallet to make, now I can't stop its so much fun. Please post pics when you finish it.
-
Hey all.
@RJR_38 I download that notebook cover this morning. I went and bought 2 A5 notebooks at lunch time and just finished making the cover there now but the thing is mine over laps the sides by about quarter inch to much for my liking. What width notebook did you use.
I used the decovil heavy and it was hard to turn but its not to bad looking will be buying some light when it comes into stock. I didn't have any ribbon so made one from fabric. But next time I would sew it more to the right rather than right in the middle its to bulky.
Also a tip i used a zipper foot to sew right near the interfacing.
-
@CraftyIrish I love that book cover - another rabbit hole to fall down I fear. I have also started crocheting a Baby Groot having been inspired by your avatar!!!

Have you finished the wallet yet? Yeah the book cover is great but I did rip it apart last night and fixed it this morning to my liking and I'm so happy I did. I learn so much from practicing.
-
@CraftyIrish It looks great!
There are instructions in the pattern on how to adjust the pattern for any size book so I just measured my book and adjusted the pattern as needed. Mine was a hardback book and ended up being very snug to get in (almost a little too snug) so I will add a tiny bit next time.
I just bought a 5 pack of A5 books from Amazon so have plenty left to practice with and gift...
I want to make Spencer Ogg's new pattern- the bumitty bum bag but not got the time at the moment lol
-
Yeah I fixed it and I'm making another one at the moment making it out of my uncle's old fender t-shirt.
-
Fender t-shirt into notebook cover
-
I have finished my Worsley Wallet and love it. I discovered after much trial and error that a microtex needle works best on waxed cotton fused to Decovil heavy. I love it and would like to make a cork one next. The waxed cotton was gifted to me by @dolcevita after she had finished the Merchant and Mills Factotum.
-
@Clareew that looks amazing.
-
Thank you for the likes. I have taken a photo to show how neat the flower magnet clasp is. I bought it ages ago at a show and had to Google to find out how to get it to work - the flower part unscrews from it's base for fixing.
-
@Clareew I love it! I especially love the lock - I am always on the look out for unusual locks and zip pulls...
As for microtex needles I use them for most of my bag making now - I love them!
-
Downloaded spencer oggs new bag pattern two days ago.
bag pattern (https://www.spencerogg.com/product/the-amplector-pack-pdf-sewing-pattern/)
I ordered all of the materials yesterday enough to make 2 bags can't wait to start it.
-
@CraftyIrish I’m trying that one tonight but want to make it out of scraps first.
I haven’t got any cotton webbing so will make a fabric handle.
I really like the bag with the webbing for a casual look so may have to invest in some.

let me know how you get on and post a pic. I ordered 1'' webbing on amazon because I have all the 1'' hardware there. The webbing only cost me £5.82 for 5 metres.
-
@CraftyIrish the bag is on hold as I’ve decided I really want the webbing straps so am going to order some tonight.
-
@Ellabella I think it will look good with webbing. I got some nice webbing from ebay before but lots of places sell it. Nylon webbing is cheaper than thick cotton but it depends what style you are after. I made up one of her bum bags this morning for my sister for dog walking. I used cotton webbing [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Ooooh I do like those rainbow zips. I keep looking at them but I got a 3m length of navy continuous zip recently so shouldn’t buy any more for a bit.
I’m going to make a couple of shopping bags to keep me going until my hardwear arrives.
-
I am addicted to zips and zipper pulls - it is almost as bad as my fabric habit now haha
-
Finally got round to making https://www.spencerogg.com/product/the-amplector-pack-pdf-sewing-pattern/
I was waiting for the webbing for the strap. The webbing I bought was a little softer than I really wanted but that’s the problem with buying on line.
As usual it’s an excellent pattern with comprehensive instructions. I’ve just noticed one of my sides bulges a bit but I’m not going back in to fix it as I already have another one planned.
This afternoon I’m trying her Forever Shopper in waxed cotton and there should be plenty left for another Amplector.
I haven’t sewn with waxed cotton for years since the days when I patched up motorbike jackets. I’ve a feeling that the new stuff will be nicer to use.
-
That is lovely.
I'm in the process of making mine its driving me made at the minute. I Don't know what's going on i have had to rip the top stitching out about 5 times now because its skipping stitches. I don't have anymore 90/14 needles but I did try a 100/16 but it was still skipping so what else could be wrong.
-
What type of fabric are you using @CraftyIrish ?
-
What type of fabric are you using @CraftyIrish ?
Canvas
-
The most common cause is a blunt needle, I’d use a 16 for canvas.
If it’s not the needle have you checked your threading, both needle and bobbin? Any stray threads or fluff in the bobbin case?
Is your bobbin wound properly? Sometimes mine can be a bit loose and that can cause problems.
Was the machine stitching properly before you started top stitching?
I try not to top stitching too close to the edge, a millimetre or so further from edge can sometimes help.
-
Have you got any Microtex or Sharps needles? Failing that a Jeans needle. I often find many problems with stitching are solved with one of these.
-
I think its mostly the thread and the last 90/14 needle is a cheap one I bought in tesco. I have ordered some new needles. But not sure what to do about the thread because my local fabric shop is not open. Maybe I will contact the shop I purchased the fabric from and get them to pick the best thread to match the fabric.
-
Just finished my second Forever Shopper as a beach bag for DD.
I did the first in waxed cotton. It’s a well designed and well finished bag.
Now all we need is beach weather to go with it

I have made my Amplector bum bag, I went with 1" webbing because I liked the unusual buckle.
It is a bit big as a walking the dog bumbag but will be useful when we are allowed out more and I need to take mask, and other handbag items. I love the ingenious method of creating the inside pocket and the way the bag 'is born' through the bottom of the pocket and the zip.
I bought the cork fabric from The Little British Fabric Shop (https://www.thelittlebritishfabricshop.co.uk/product/cork_turquoise_new) and managed to get it out of a fat eighth.
-
She does some lovely patterns and its great having the videos to watch as well. We have a good little craft shop in our village which is now open and I managed to get my bag strap and fittings from there cheaper than I could online to finish my first one. I still need to make a step for my Bummity bag to put keys in when I walk the dog. This is mine
-
Keep them out of reach, it looks like the dog thinks they're tasty! Great bags - the more of these I see, the more I like them.
-
There safe at the moment as they haven't had any treats in them. He's locking his lips after getting stuck into his bone.
-
Thought I'd try out the smaller size Amplector, all made from leftover fabric scraps, including the strap. Front pocket is woven viscose, main body linen/cotton mix from antique Next trousers, lining FQ remnants, strap woven stretch cotton, the zip is a random unwanted chunky open ended spare - most of my myriad stash zips are sadly too narrow.
It's a handy size so I'll probably use it but not over keen on that side strap design feature - for me it just looks odd, like a mistake. If I make another - the larger size could be useful too - I'd probably sew the strap in the 'normal' place. What do the other Amplector makers here think?
Also the strap doesn't need quite so much adjustment length unless I want to wear it down my thigh! I rechecked that I'd cut the right length and yes I had. Webbing would be good next time - I only have black - but it's good to deplete my scrap stash anyway.

I forgot the 1" slide release buckle and triglide came from Amazon, 18 sets, 3 different sizes for a tenner. They should see me out. :)
-
It looks good! Like you I wasn’t keen on the side strap feature so will stick with the bummity bum bag I think
-
Thanks @RJR_38. Glad it wasn't just me found that odd. I agree the Bummity Bum is a very useful pattern - I wear mine when I'm out and about without decent size pockets. This is it, more leftover scraps including pleather for the belt holder. If the fabric looks familiar it's already been seen on tsp as a padded gilet and several mask pouches 0_0

-
I ordered 1 inch webbing because I had the 1 inch hardware already, but it's not big enough for my liking. So I went and ordered 2 inch cotton webbing and then found it hard to get 2 inch triglide but found one then it got lost in the post so now I have to wait for another set to come.
I wish I had a fabric shop near me that had all this stuff.
-
I wish I had a fabric shop near me that had all this stuff.
Me too @CraftyIrish. You finally track down what you want then discover postage to Ireland is £15! Or wait 6 weeks for delivery from China....
-
Finally got the last thing i was waiting on to finish my bag.
-
Very nice @CraftyIrish ..
So satisfying when you finally get to complete a project.
-
Very nice @CraftyIrish - is that the larger Amplector? That colour webbing looks useful, would you have a link for it?
-
Yes its the larger one. The webbing is grand but kind of itchy and I have 30 meters of it now hopefully I can find something else to use it for.
webbing (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08YX47RZQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_47XC5TH7AS8FZ89Z8HRW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1)
-
Thanks Crafty, 30 metres hmm
-
I have covered webbing with fabric for bag handles before. That might work to stop it itching.
-
Hi,
I've been looking at the Amplector bag patter but it seems as though it's only one area i.e. no pockets. Is that correct?
What I like is the strap coming from the side as then the bag will stay close to my body if I bend. I used to have bags like this but haven't been able to find them recently.
I made two of her clutches last weekend and considering it was the first time of making such things they didn't turn out too bad - they've already been claimed anyway. Her patterns were very good to follow.
Here's what I made
Worsey Wallet - I later added some fittings and a chain but don't have a photo of that.

This is the other one, a flip clutch.
Please don't look too closely at the stitching, I'm still getting used to a new machine as well.
My niece who nabbed it seemed happy with it.

@Kitten I’ve done the Amplector and the inner space is divided into two sections. I will empty mine and take a photo after my morning greenhouse duties.
-
Thanks @Ellabella
-
Hopefully this shows the pocket
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Sorry for rubbish photo, DH hates taking them with my iPad.
Obviously there is also one on the front
It’s a good pattern, the strap arrangement allows the bag to sit very close to the body and the large fits my phone, sanitizer bottle, tissues, pen and small change purse.
The webbing I bought is a little too soft and it folds up but this one was just a test before I cut into my leather. :scream:
When I make my next one I will topstitch the inner pocket once it’s been folded.
-
Thanks @Ellabella the pattern has somehow fallen onto my computer drive! ;)
