Title: Selfless February Contest - 01.02.2019 - 28.02.2019
Post by: Manuela on January 30, 2019, 03:29:19 AM
Welcome to our Selfless February contest

This is all about selfless sewing (something I very rarely do  ;)) You are about to sew garments for someone else, that can be your spouse, relatives, friends, colleagues, or customers (ok, not that selfless). Keep in mind that we have a 'sewing for little ones' contest in March, hence please wait with those projects for a bit.

Here a few rules:
- Sewing starts on February 1st and ends on February 28th
- Any kind of preparation can be done before the start date (including cutting)
- You can post here about your ideas and progress,  but please put a clear submission post up in this thread latest by March
- Please use the template below for your submission post(s) (I lerarned my lesson from the last contest  :P)

(your name)'s Entry (indicate the number if you have more than one entry)

What is it and for whom

Pattern used (commercial or self-drafted, anything goes)

A short description on how you made it/problems overcome/etc.

Pictures (ideally included in the text, but I can do that for you if needed)

Happy Sewing

I've got a coat to do for my OH.  I did sew stash, but didn't be bothered to post photos.

It's a weird meld of this  (https://coolmaterial.com/style/tender-type-900-denim-jacket/) jacket and Kwik 3123 with some healthy drafting thrown in.  Black denim/black wool.

Sewing for others...sure. I do that about every 10 years. I'm not due for another 3 or 4 so may pass. On the other hand, last year-the year before?- I bought two lengths of nice flannel to make lounge pants for OH. I know where they are and they've already been washed. If I can lay my hands on the pattern I *might* give it a go.

Nobody lose sleep while you wait for me to join in.  :ninja:

Aha!!  At last a competition that I can enter!

I am currently assembling patterns and fabrics for my Poppins Return project.  This is for DGD Lilya (who will be answering to Lily Poppins for the duration....)

Outfit will consist of: Dress, Coat, Skirt/blouse, and Carpet bag.

Patterns chosen are both Burda, but will be Frankened quite a bit.

I will fill in the entry details when I have everything assembled.  It may be that I don't finish everything, as I have until April when the Disneyland trip will happen.

Pity about this, I've been sewing a coat for DD for the last few weeks, it's taking forever as it has to be pattern matched, interlined etc etc-------------

I think I will make my DH some pyjamas, he needs another pair. Have sent for some samples, and will get him measured for a Lekala pattern. I'm not paying nearly £10 for a simple pj pattern, as he will never need the robe. He has had two in the 30 years we have been together, and the present one is fine. It's only worn in hospital or to answer the door to the postman! He wears T shirts on top, so I could make one of those as well, his are quite old.

I intend to make a pair of trousers for OH but first, and it doesn't even count, something more noble. I am replacing a zip. Lots of fiddle faddle, my least favourite repair.  Wouldn't do it for just anyone!

My lovely friend B has been invited to a murder mystery costume party where she is supposed to be a glamorous nun. I have been recruited to make something resembling a habit which should be interesting.

She is only a size 10 and petite (I'm a size 18 standard height) so anything I make for her won't even fit on the dressmakers dummy I have which is a generic 16-18.

The plus is I can enter it into the contest here, plus have the pleasure of sewing something for a friend who has been there for me in some tough times.

I think I may be eligible for this one.  I started to sew after the 6th Feb, and up to now, I have a Poppinesque blouse, jacket and skirt. I will go and read the instructions.

I have plans for a dress, but whether I can finish it in time....?

Not sure where to go with this one.  Can you tell I'm not good with competitions?

Don't worry it's a bit too wet out there at the moment for fabric shoes!

It could be your entry here thought :D

(If embroidery is allowed)

@Francesca, I initially thought about garments only, but I think ‘anything goes as  long as it is sewn and for someone else’ is the better approach  :)

The costume for my friend is complete though we won't be able to get a photo of her in it until Saturday.

I can do a dressmakers dummy shot with the headdress on the floor flat.

(must go back and see if Manuela already told us when the photos  have to be up)

Thanks @Manuela. The actual event is later in March sometime, but have asked her if we can do a photo this weekend.
I adapted two different new patterns and was really pleased at how good the fit was with only minor alterations. It's been interesting sewing for someone of such a different size to me. I did make my life easier though by choosing a loosely fitted pattern. Even those need to fit in the shoulders though.

I've determined that I am neither selfless, nor am I sewing. As of last Saturday it's been a full year of no sewing. At this point motivation and interest have almost completely evaporated. sigh...

I was going to do jeans for OH who says he does not want them after all. My middle son was promised a pair of trousers from material we bought together  xxxx years ago. He was delighted. All I asked was waist size, inside leg and outside leg measurement, so I could get the body length right. Have been waiting since end of January. Today, he came to visit and we got out the tape measure. Turns out he knew the size he usually buys all along. Aaaagh. I will cut them out tomorrow, needless to say, they will not be finished in time. Well, could be, if it wasn't for those pesky meals and things, but they won't.

I finished the shirt for the other half.

Fajita's Entry (indicate the number if you have more than one entry)

What is it and for whom.
This is a man's shirt, made by request for my husband.

Pattern used
This was a commercial Mens' shirt pattern, Version A of Simplicity 1544 BB

A short description on how you made it/problems overcome/etc.
It was sewn on a Bernina 550QE, and it was tailored slightly by increasing the back and front lengths, and a belly adjustment; the sleeves were shortened and the cuffs shortened. The front pocket was increased to take account of fitting in a mobile phone.
The biggest problem I had was sourcing buttons, locally.

Baby outfit for DGS7
Sew Over It Strawberry Sweatshirt and Tangerine Trousers

this is a test run using fabric from stash. Sewinf aroung the feet was easier than I expected, but because I used quite a wide overlocking stitch when I turned them right side out the seam went into "corners". Its the same on RTW, I'll try narrower overlocking next time. sorry blurred picture.

Baby's Wardrobe for DGS7
Sew Over It: Strawberry Sweatshirt, Tangerine Trousers, Honeydew Hoodie, Clover Trousers, Dandelion Dungarees
Butterick 6030 for Hat, Shirts, Jogging Bottoms and Tee-shirt.
Sweat shirting and Navy nautical print is new the rest is from stash.
Started off making just a few things, then kept on making things out of left overs. Original project tripled in size. I used plastic poppers for the first time, much better than metal ones with spikes. I embroidered the tee shirt.

Glamorous Nun Character Costume for my friend B

My friend B has been invited to a Murder Mystery party, where each of the guests has a character. Hers appears to be a nun though it later turns out she is not. So she wanted a nun costume with a few wrong bits to give the hint.
She is a much smaller size than I am, so I took a few measurements and chose styles which didn't need a lot of fitting.
For the main dress we used Simplicity 8055, cutting a 10 in the upper body, flaring out to a 12 at the hips.
I added 14 inches to the length of the dress and 9 inches to the length of the sleeves. This gave a long dress with long sleeves.
For the white collar, I made a polo neck poncho from a white knit fabric, using Simplicty 8376 as a starting point.
I traced off the upper front and back and extended the shoulder line and added a curve. I also cut the neckband much deeper than the pattern to give a polo neck (turtle neck). I finished the edges with overlocking.
I thrifted two necklaces and combined them to make a neckpiece.
I made a headdress from a square of fabric with one corner cut off and the opposite corner rounded. This was stitched to a headband sized to B's head.
(Excuse the cushion pad standing in for B's head!)
It was a lot of fun making this and I hope to get a photo of B wearing it soon.

I have been selfless and finished/made 2 tops for my mum's birthday. A scroop henrietta maria in a viscose print and a cashmerette montrose in cotton. Hopefully have managed to attach a picutre of the latter.

For interest the HM was graded from size 42 neck/shoulder to 46. 3 inches added to length as this pattern is short even for us stumpies.  Circa 2 inches removed from sleeve width neck to wrist. I started this in Jan so not eligible (but practically remade last weekend with all the flippin tweaks).

The montrose was much easier. Bust dart moved up half an inch. Graded 18C/D bust out to 20 at waist and 19 ish at hip. Added 6 inches to sleeve length to make it full length with a thin binding finish.

Mum loved both.

What is it and for whom- pyjamas for DH

Pattern used Lekala 61082 T shirt and Lekala 6048 elasticated waist bottoms

A short description on how you made it/problems overcome/etc.- - Lekala have custom measurements so I did not have to adjust for DH's expanded waistline. I compared the shape to his existing Ts and it seemed very close. The bottoms were quite a lot wider than his current ones so I narrowed them, they were also longer and I cut them down to match. He only wears them to sleep, so I saw no need to add pockets or a decorative drawstring.

@Manuela I have edited my entry above to include a picture of the costume being worn by my friend.
