A Good Yarn / How do you hold your knitting needles?
« on: December 20, 2018, 18:01:13 PM »
I hold my right knitting needle for underneath. Is this unusual? I can't find an videos of anyone doing the same  :S
It comes natural, but now I wonder if I'm awkward

« on: December 30, 2017, 23:12:52 PM »
Well I read that you want pictures of sewing - so here's one :)

Made for DGD's Doll for Christmas, I based them on a really old Vogue Linda Carr pattern. Its a DesignaFriend copy
The bag is from the SewOerIt web site tutorial.

In the wardrobe / Needing easy(ish) patterns for new wardrobes
« on: August 02, 2017, 21:04:14 PM »
My life is twisting and turning faster than I can keep up.
I may be going on an unexpected short break (city) for a few days AND I maybe changing my job to something my office oriented.  I haven't got the clothes to cope  :S
Everything I have is either shabby or inappropriate (or both)
Any ideas?
Many thanks  :)

Patterns Discussion / Set in Sleeve Head - How much ease?
« on: July 12, 2017, 18:12:23 PM »
How much ease should a sleeve head have? I'm working with the Vogue fitting shell and it allows 1 1/2". I thought it was the norm to allow an inch. What do you think?

In the wardrobe / Making my own Patterns (help and critique)
« on: July 09, 2017, 10:54:45 AM »
I can't find anything I like in my normal brand of Patterns, so I thought I would try and make my own.  I have have Vogue's Shell patterns (1003 & 1004) in sizes 12 & 18 and two books on flat pattern drafting. What could possibly go wrong.
(Have Vogue completely lost the plot, its either summer dresses or downright quirky?)

My brief history is I was a size 22 for a while, dieted, went down to 12  :) Then I had to take meds and put on a couple of stone  :'( (ok cream cakes didn't help with that). Bone structurally in think I am a size 12 and my vertical measurement match up to a 12. Width wise I'm a 14/16 but most of my weight is on my tummy, so totally out of proportion. My waist is a size 20  :o  I'm hoping to get back to a size 12.
Whilst I've been doing all this measuring up I've found out my arms and legs are in the wrong place!! I thought when I was a 12 I fitted it straight out of the box, just having to watch the length of trousers, but no, my knees, ankles, wrists and elbows are all wrong  :P

My first "Good Idea" was to superimpose my 12 & 18 blocks onto a sheet of tissue (blue and brown felt tip) and then use green for the lines for my final version. I now have something that resembles a Burda pattern, but twice as confusing. I'm just going to do it again just marking what I will use in black.

I'm not planning on making anything fitted just yet, I don't think that would be a good look on me. Simple elastic waists and the like will do for now.

I would appreciate any help and advice as I vaven't got a clue what I'm doing  :)

Sewing Machines / All my machines (Showing off)
« on: June 06, 2017, 09:16:53 AM »
I've never had all my machines under one roof until yesterday.
They are normally out and about with family members being used, but they've come home for a bit of TLC.
It feels so greedy having this lot. All were bought new and they've all been well used and are still going strong.

Sewing Machines / Pfaff 1473 CD Help
« on: June 03, 2017, 08:54:28 AM »
The manual for this machine is long lost.
I used this machine a lot many moons a ago, and I'm now using it to teach DGD3 to sew.
My mind set is Bernina this is the only Pfaff I've had and it didn't quite work for me. Nothing wrong with Pfaffs but I got Berninas in my blood from the age of 6.

I would like to know:
The best way to overcast an edge.
How to edge stitch. with Bernina I'd use a blindstitch foot ( 5 or 10) as a guide.

Many thanks

In the wardrobe / DGD3 is a natural
« on: June 03, 2017, 08:36:16 AM »
I helped 11 yo DGD3 make a skirt, just a simple elastic-waist, width-of-fabric skirt. it's the first thing she has made.
But, WOW is she a natural on a sewing machine! She looks so confident! She can sew in a straight line and knows about reversing and when to do it. The only thing she had trouble with is getting the elastic through, still that will come in time.
I couldn't get a picture as she had to dash off to an appointment, wearing her skirt.
Next up is a pair of shorts, because she can't get what she wants in the shops!

The Haberdashery / Metal eyelets
« on: May 29, 2017, 15:43:14 PM »
(I hope I'm posting in the right place)
I've got two different make of 1 cm across metal eyelets. Both work by the same process. make a hole in the fabric with a cutting tool, place a ring either side and hammer together. But the bu88ers don't grip the fabric.
I've tried hammering them, using pliers and even putting them in a vice, No luck!
The fabric I'm using is cotton, I thought this might be too thin but tripling it didn't help.
One brand I have the metal split  :o
Am I doing something wrong?
For my current project I've abandoned the eyelets and am using button holes, but I would like to use them in the future.

In the wardrobe / Sewing with pre-teen
« on: May 24, 2017, 08:33:00 AM »
I'm planning a sewing session with DGD3 next week.
Any suggestions on what to make?
What about patterns?
Looking forward to hearing any ideas you have.

I am starting to make quilts more or less from scratch. I plan on documenting my experience here.  No doubt I will make every single mistake there is. Please feel free to laugh along with me. All suggestions and criticisms are welcome. No offence will be taken. I going to dust off my Bernina 730 Record, a machine I've had since 1970, it just feels right to use that machine to do patchwork.
I have had some good advice from Iminei which is where I will start.
