What lies beneath... / Sian Thomas Bra Tutorial
« on: June 27, 2017, 09:50:06 AM »
Just found this on Youtube, and it takes you step by step through the making of the Cloth Habit, Harriet Bra, which is an underwired bra.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRepyjHNcJg

Not a professional video, but a young lady who is making a bra which she will wear herself.

In the wardrobe / Looking for McCalls 4007
« on: June 23, 2017, 10:14:10 AM »
I've found this pattern which will be perfect to make for my hols, but, a) it's OOP, and b) the ones I have found, have had ridiculous postal charges.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Home-Kitchen/McCalls-Pletsch-Classic-Pattern-4007-Lengths-8-10-12-14/B00C88NFO0

So, if any of you have this pattern and would like to sell, or know where I can find it, please give me a shout.

Current Projects / I want to do a 'Disappearing 9 patch'
« on: June 20, 2017, 09:35:20 AM »
Peeping round the corner to the Dark Side, and wondering if I'll come out quilted!  :)

I saw this particular design on here, and fell in love with it, I think Brenda posted it: https://uk.pinterest.com/pin/535717318149888722/

DD has asked me (again), to re-cover a nursing chair for her.  I promised to do it a while ago, and had the cushions cut to fit, but we couldn't agree on the patchwork design, and she threw a throw over it.  ><

This time, I want it finished.  New baby is on the way, and she'll need a nursing chair.

I just need some advice about arranging the squares, and how many colours to stick to for a block.

Any advice will be welcome!

A Good Yarn / Caterpillar Crochet
« on: June 14, 2017, 09:10:02 AM »
Totally random project started when my Vogue dress project stalled.

I've wanted to do a Very Hungry Caterpillar blanket for our new GS (due soon), but I couldn't find a pattern I liked.

So, a C to C blanket has been embarked on - I know, I've done a few!  ;)

This time however, my intention is to add a sort of hood, with the Caterpillar face on it.  Mainly white, with four primary colours - red, yellow, green and blue, with the hood in red.

I tried to crochet a caterpillar motif, but I couldn't find a decent pattern and my own efforts were a disaster.  I did find a lovely one, but the website is relatively new, and Ben hasn't had chance to put patterns up yet, as he is travelling.  Here's a link though, worth a look: https://www.crochet-hombre.com/crochet-hombre-works

Any suggestions will be gratefully recieved!

Patterns Discussion / V1395 Rebecca Taylor
« on: June 08, 2017, 09:59:18 AM »
This is a pattern that I bought from Fran.  It looks just my style - if a little short.  I'll be making the first iteration in a totally man made fabric that I've had for years (and years).  I've already made a top in it, so I know it's easy to sew.

I need to trace, then lengthen the pattern (rotten knees), and check for any alterations first, but hopefully, I'll get cut out before I leave work.

Patterns Discussion / Fitting and ease
« on: June 05, 2017, 11:10:10 AM »
Or something else completely? ....

I've made a few garments lately, and tbh, getting a bit disheartened by the results.  Sometimes the shoulders are huge, sometimes the body looks like a ship in sail, sometimes the sleeves are too tight, sometimes too long, sometimes too short...

How do I figure out what is ease, what is just too big, and what is a design feature?

On one pattern I made recently using my measurements, I was a size 16, but the shoulders were about 3" too wide.  I've just measured up for a Vogue pattern, and that is coming up as a size 22!  Go figure!

Any tips for getting a good looking garment?

Vintage Machines / Hevsi's Website link
« on: June 01, 2017, 15:08:40 PM »
I was reminded of this on another thread, and thought it worth a thread of its own.  Such a lot of good, in-depth information here, especially identifying attachments.

https://edsmum.wordpress.com/category/attachment-reviews/page/2/

Unfortunately, Hevsi isn't a member here, but she was a very valuable member of TSF, with a huge knowledge of vintage machines.

I'm sure that new and old vintage owners will find something on this blog, unfortunately, I don't think it is current, but the information is still excellent.

Patterns Discussion / Simplicity 1561
« on: June 01, 2017, 09:14:55 AM »
I was soooo daring last night!  I cut out this pattern, instead of tracing

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Simplicity+1561+sewing+pattern&safe=active&client=firefox-b&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjP79GIlJzUAhXMCsAKHUrcAGQQ_AUICygC&biw=1109&bih=809#imgrc=nieloWecRhAbCM:

It only cost me £1, so I wasn't too bothered.  There's a nice gathered top on it, (these seem to be all the rage) which I thought DD would like, so last night I made a toile.  Finished it at 6 this morning (rough sleep), and just need to insert the elastic, then I can check the size.

I had an idea that I could alter this into one of those tops with the frill around the top, - I made one for myself several centuries ago :)

Anyone made anything off this pattern?  It seems very easy, and lots of nightwear variations.

Patterns Discussion / iCandy Handmade, Free T Shirt pattern
« on: May 30, 2017, 09:36:04 AM »
Second iteration of this T shirt for me, quite garish, but I like it.  I added some length, as I found the previous pattern a bit short, and I curved the back.  I also added piping at the shoulders, but I should have used matching fabric.  As it was, I used some I already had cut, and it's a bit 'off', same with binding, but no matter, I like it.

One thing I forgot to do, was to make the armhole larger, so I had to make a small gusset piece under the arms.

Patterns Discussion / Can I make this wider?
« on: May 26, 2017, 10:24:59 AM »
I started making this for the dressup box sometime last year, and for some reason it got overlooked.  We found it last night, and Lilya said that she would like Nana to finish it for her.

So, we tried it on (Lilya has a healthy respect for the pins), and it fit perfectly - except for the circumference!  Fortunately, I hadn't sewn the zip in.

What I would like to know is how easy this will be to correct, or should I start another?  I need a minimum of an inch adding, but the only place I can see to get the extra fabric in, is the back.

Any ideas accepted!

I clicked on one of the links on the Bernina site, and it led me here: https://veravenus.com/diy-things-to-make-tutorials-patterns/

Lots of free Vintage inspired freebies!

Enjoy!

I was looking for a shirtdress link which had been on the Bernina website, but unfortunately, no longer there.  ><

However, there are loads and loads of other free goodies if you fancy a browse, dressmaking, quilting, embroidery.

Here are a few samples: http://blog.bernina.com/en/2016/06/50s-dress-with-knotted-shoulders-free-sewing-pattern/

http://blog.bernina.com/en/2016/08/handkerchief-hem-maxi-dress/

I don't think the website is very easy to negotiate, but when you get to the Bernina website, go to the Blog, then Archive.  Lots of stuff available.

I saw this & I thought you may be interested! / Nice idea
« on: May 23, 2017, 09:41:08 AM »
This came through on my Youtube, and I thought it may be of interest.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndhRnABTteU

It's from Stitchless TV and I'm not usually a fan.  She calls it Vivetta Style, looks like a loosely based Schiaparelli homage.  Could be fun though on a plain shirt.

Fun with Fabric / The Slither problem
« on: May 22, 2017, 13:14:05 PM »
I was making a toile yesterday, when I realised that I might actually like to wear the top/toile.  I believe it was a sort of poly crepe de chine, very cheap as it was also badly off grain. However, it was a huge challenge, as the fabric was just so slippery.

I just used lots of spray starch, which helped a bit, but makes the top look very distorted on the picture.

Any tips for managing fabric like this as I have a lot of slippy fabric, but it takes sooooo long to cut out?
