Title: What to do with the quilts
Post by: Lisalou1965 on October 12, 2020, 22:28:17 PM
Interesting topic (well, I think it is) which comes up as a result of a couple of answers on other threads...what do you do with your quilts when you finish them? Admittedly, I haven't made that many - haven't counted either - maybe 15 or so? Some crib, some larger, some lap quilts. I have only just got around to making a lap quilt for me, to stay with me. I know some people just put them away and go on to the next one, others just give em away as fast as they make them. Some for charity, some as gifts. What do you ladies do with yours?

Just wondering

Mostly I make for specific people as gifts. I have four lap/single quilts around the house because I like them. I have one in the cupboard, never know when you’re going to need one, eh

We use 'em!    I thought I was going to be an Art Quilter but turned out I like to make utility quilts. One of them goes camping and to the beach, though not lately. We sleep under them. I make throws, no actual bed sized ones yet, so I might have two or three piled on me. Very cozy.

As I mentioned earlier today elsewhere my plan is to fill several shelves in an antique oak armoire with quilts. At that point I plan on being done quilting.  Right now it's mostly fabric and some quilt tops.

It was actually you speaking about your oak armoire which you intend to fill that got me thinking about this. I love the idea of quilts being used. I can fully appreciate art quilts, but I cannot see myself making one.

I don't make many quilts because I like to make them for a reason.  I don't  want to put them in a cupboard.  I don't have children / grandchildren but have palmed  off one each on a niece and nephew.  I like doing the  TSP Project Linus quilt because it's a reason to make one and I'm anticipating a couple more when our building is finished and I have some extra rooms and walls.

Oh, almost forgot, my one and only double bed size quilt hanging on a rail above the stairwell.

Oh so Humble ... Please do post a pic of this almost forgotten quilt @fajita

Mine are all over ... the lap size ones are on the back of the chairs in the dining room (where I mostly live) and keep out the odd draught that comes through the doors when its cold.

The very first 'coverlet' made when I knew NOTHING and there was no internet ! is on my bed at this vary moment as its the perfect weight for the autumn nights plus a duvet

Theres a 'small'* stack on the footstool in the front room and more in my lovely Billy bookcase. There are quilts covering the hall and landing walls and two boxes of quilts under the bed in Pearliepops bedroom which also boasts the Village on the wall behind the bed.

@which according to NASA can be seen from space!

There's one each on our bed and the guestroom bed.  Two are hanging over the banister on the landing (a galleried landing is a wonderful thing!)  A couple are folded up on top of wardrobes.  One is folded up in the corner of the sitting room for emergency use.

We are going to have new wardrobes on a full wall in our bedroom next year (I hope) and I think a couple of shelves specifically for quilts would be nice.  Not as nice as RS's antique armoire, but the same principle.  It would be nice to be able to open the door and gloat over them.

I don't keep them in the airing cupboard because I don't think that the heat does a folded quilt any favours.  I don't hang them on walls because, again like RS, I like to use them.  In any case we have a lot of pictures and there isn't any wall space available.

I should elaborate I guess. I'm not making quilts to keep in a cupboard. I like seasonal quilts and would like several so I can rotate them as I see fit. Once the designated shelves are full I imagine I'll have enough.

I've seen photos in quilting or decor magazines and online where there is a cupboard with the door open with shelves stacked full of folded quilts. I can't properly describe the way my heart sings when I see them. One of my inspiration photos is the cover of a quilting magazine. All of the Christmas quilts featured inside are stacked up. Its gorgeous to me.

Absolutely!  For me it's the obvious next step to loving having my fabrics neatly folded where I can see them in my sewing room.  Inspiration and a feast for the eyes, and when it's actual quilts, also a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.   :loveit:

When (if!) my parents downsize I will probably receive a large, (very) antique chest, which should be an ideal place to store them, but I wouldn't be able to open it and gaze on them in the same way.

I say ‘shoved in a cupboard’ but they’re not. One in the lounge that’s used daily. The new string quilt will get used in the lounge too. @Deafoldbat lovely quilts are in the kitchen/ diner where I see them all the time along with three other small quilts folded over the backs of the chairs. One over the banister, four or five in the spare room. Christmas ones are  actually in the cupboard waiting their turn. Some are made for gifts. The new Delilah will go on the bed in DD’s room ( spare room)

@Acorn the armoire ain't all that grand. It's really elaborate farm style and was from the likes of IKEA from 100 years ago. The label is still there. It shipped flat packed and was bolted together by the consumer. The panels on the front and side are plywood.  ;) Oak but still plywood. Much to my jealousy my Mom gave it to my brother. I got it when his wife decided to redecorate. I love the old thing. It makes a great sewing storage cupboard, hidden in plain sight.

Stacks of folded quilts are lovely, the more so when you made them yourself.

@Efemera I just did in the ditch around the blocks and shapes. Very simple.

Mine are folded and piled on shelves in the box / storage room.
My husband hates things " lying about" so they're not on sofas or chairs and certainly would never be over the banister of the galleried landing.
I hate wall hangings.....so......they stay on the shelves until they go to the charity shop / bin

I always make them for a purpose- usually gifts for weddings or new babies. I have one on my bed, an old well worn one over an armchair in a spare room and one for sitting under watching TV. The star quilt we made as a swap a few years ago is on one spare bed and this year’s BOM quilt will be on the other spare bed. I’ve just about run out  of places to use them, so any more I make will need to be gifts.

No one I know wants a quilt. I made one each for my granddaughters but they were never even unpacked, let alone used.
I do make for Project Linus

I have a queen sized one on the futon couch but it's functional to protect the futon from the cat and provide some color to the room.  The crazy cat likes to sleep under the quilt though.  Even in the summer.

The other ones are all lap quilts of various sizes for the short winter here.  Also I have pet quilts that are much smaller.  I used to keep them outside the closed bedroom door for the little Westie to lay on as he liked to be as close as possible to us. There's also one folded up on the bottom shelf in the closet in the back room where the cat sometimes hides out when the cleaners are here.  But now with only one cat I don't even know what to do with them.  Possibly I can donate to an animal shelter.

I have one lap sized quilt draped over the portables evaporative cooler stored in the back room. Much more attractive.

Still most of them are in the back closet since we have little use for them now.  Maybe in December.

Aw Lowena, that is so sad. I cannot imagine a more beautiful gift than one that you have made for that person. Your quilts are so pretty,

Well I have rejoiced at @fajita  magnificentquilt and felt oh so sad at Lowena's tale.

I have made very few and always given to someons as part of a plan.
My GC's use them for dens, sitting on, cuddling into and if a party they go in the barn and cover the straw bales..my daughter has one, the first I ever made, and I would love to make her one now I know so much more  but she has refused ome
My son had a big corner sofa and I made a massive one for that. again used every day.
I have one as a throw on the settee that is a bit worn on the edges - sitting on it now
I have made a large cot siz quilt for daughters friends baby.
I have a rainbow one planned for my great neice,  one nearly finished one for my OH's sofa. Strangely I don't have one on our bed. The size it would need to be I find quite daunting (king size bed)though I would love to make one
AS for the BOM one I had plans to put it on a chair in son's bedroom when he moved out except he's not moved out :(

I have made one for each of the beds except my own (note to self...). This year's BOM will hang in the spare room as it matches the two I've made for there.
Him indoors thinks quilts are old fashioned so he can jazz on my hump and I'm in the throes of making one each for two of his boys. I'm hoping they're not quite as thick as their dad.  ><
I'll make a nice one for my niece (I made her a little one) possibly soon, as she and her current beau seem quite smitten!!!!  :loveit:  ;)
The sofas and chairs need some and PL is on the back burner but almost complete.
Changing out the seasons is a brilliant idea and my 'still in kit form' Christmas one may be made reversible.
All this talk of armoires and displays has made me think... 0_0

I have loved reading this thread, it makes me feel better about some of the things I make that I just love to look at, I have made a collection of Latvian and Norwegian style mittens which I am sure I will never wear but I love them, I do give some away sometimes but still have too many and am still knitting.

At the moment I am really learning to weave in lots of different ways but don’t ask me what I will do with hundreds of scarves.

Quilting is still on my radar but I seem to have a problem actually finishing anything

Mine are made as presents, 3 of the grandkids have them and there is one still to be made - fabric at the ready and some for friends who've had babies. Others have been given away - Project Linus, a raffle prize etc and those I've kept are in a blanket box

Well, you know what I've done with quite a few of my quilts!

I make quite a lot of PL type quilts. I get the therapy, and it doesn't go in the cupboard. I make a gift quilt from time to time if I think the person will like it and use it. I make quilts because I want to, and now there is room in the cupboard again I shall probably make one before long that will start a new pile. I have a couple of quilts on the chairs downstairs for decoration and for chilly evenings. I have one on the bed. The DSs have had quilts in the past though none in use at the moment - packed away somewhere, I must find them and give them an airing at least, and possibly threaten to rehome them if they're no longer wanted...

Like books, quilts do furnish a room.

As a matter of  interest, if you sell these quilts how much can you expect for them given all the hours that have been spent on them.

People will not pay, they think homemade =cheap. If you add up fabric and hours it would be well into the high hundreds.

I've got one on each guest bed, ( none in my bedroom as I only like white bedding) a couple on walls ( smaller art quilts) I've got a few I use outside as cheer-ups on the garden settees and a few are just blanket things in the garage to use in the boot of the car if needed.  I now only make them if I can see a purpose for the finished project, so I haven't done any for ages now.

I have made a few for the house- lap quilts & one for the bed. But most of my quilts are donated to local organizations.  My quilt guild regularly collects small quilts to donate to children’s hospitals & lap quilts for disabled veterans.
