Title: Contests in 2019
Post by: Manuela on December 07, 2018, 07:06:54 AM
Following @Lyn-J's suggestion, I put my thinking cap on, took your ideas on board and created a rough plan for contests in 2019. While I can't please everyone, I tried my best to come up with something that works for most.

So, here it is - the list of contests for 2019 and when they will run.

A really varied selection, something for everyone. Thanks for your hard work, Manuela.

(Who knows, I might even manage to start one)

I should go with the January stash busting.  I need to find my mojo as I haven't actually sewn in months. I lost my motivation.

I had good intentions for many of this years contests but never got around to any of them.

Wow, thanks for the list and all your hard work. Just what I need to get sewing again. Some great challenges and really good to start with stash busting. My problem has been that I have too much fabric and too many patterns and not enough impetus to get on with it.

Presumably January means that it mustn't be started until Jan 1st?

We  could always have a planning competition to see who can come up with the most/best plans.  :ninja:

I'm fattered that you used my idea @Manuela.

I will need the stash busting to stay open until at least 2020  ;)

Thanks for this list @Manuela, it really helps planning :)

And yes, @Iminei is right, do we have such a list for the dark side too?

Pardon my giggles. Not making fun of, but laughing at the wonderful oddities we get in this age of auto correct & auto complete. "Fattered"....hee hee.  ;)

When I saw this I thought, but Iminei does that I think. Then I saw it was you Im. With other stuff you've related recently I don't blame you for wanting to shed the thinking cap on this one.

I can help with ideas but I'm not well versed in what sew-alongs & competitions the Dark Side normally does. Do we do full quilts besides the Project Linus one, or mostly blocks and smaller projects? I've got two or three super simple quilt ideas, some table top accessories ideas including for the sewing space, applique and P & Q block small projects, pot holders, and of course-

Pincushions! We could definitely do pincushions! (notice how I keep bringing up pincushions...)

You should have taken part in the secret Santa swap to get a nice pincushion  :D

As much as I’d love to help, I know too little about the Darkside I’m afraid.
The list was pretty much a team effort  :), many contributed to it

What a great list - looks like you'll be keeping us busy next year Manuela - thanks for putting such a great range of contests together.

Like most of us, I have plenty of stash to work with for the first contest at least!  It'll be a matter of getting into action as soon as possible after the holidays.

I'd love to have another go at SWAKOP again next year and there looks like there's some great contests running alongside it that could supply garments for the collection.

How exciting!

Lots of great options for contests thank you @Manuela , not all currently appeal to me, but I'll try to join in where I can.

@Manuela , since we've been talking alternative contests on various threads, I thought I'd request your consideration about the sewing for little ones coming up in March I believe. You included clothes for Fur Babies. Ever try to dress a cat?  :meow: Didn't think so. One or both of you need to be on Valium.

Alternatively could I possibly sew for my 18" Madame Alexander American Girl type doll? I don't think we have a category for it otherwise. Unless we go for sewing for others, in which case you'll be wanting me to seek psychiatric help.  ;)

Otherwise I see a few possibilities later in the year now that I've had a re-look. Pint sized Posh Frock anyone?

No problem, @Renegade Sewist. As furry babies are included, we might as well include dolls.....

Any chance we could have another 'stash' contest later in the year @Manuela?

I wasn't able to take part as I've not been here much but was looking forward to the chance of using up some of mine.

Birthday Girl that sounds like a delightful idea.  :flower: I need more than a month on things like this; I'm just too slow and have way too much  :fabric: :fabric: :fabric: :fabric: :fabric:.

I like your idea as well @Francesca.

How about maybe a quarterly stash sew along that would give us a bit of a deadline to work for? Say 1st Jan - 31 Mar and so on?

I actually plan a year-long stash busting sewalong for next year. This year UFOs, next year stash....
How does that sound?
Title: Re: Contests in 2019
Post by: Helen M on January 31, 2019, 11:07:48 AM
It's a long time to wait  :( . I only have 2 or 3 UFOs and they aren't a priority as I tend to bin them. There is usually a good reason why I didn't finish them!

I think I'm going to have to continue stash-busting - for ever! I'm hoping to get one top into the competition today before the deadline - just to show willing.

I'm happy to do a proper stashbust competition for 2020 but seeing as I am doing my own mini stashbust and others seem interested I'd like to start a thread for an informal, non-official one for 2019?

@Francesca, I’m absolutely fine with that, best to wait until after the vote for the current contest though  :)

I had a thread up last year asking and brainstorming for suggestions for this year's contests. I based the list at the first post of this thread on the input I got, trying to have something for everyone. I am sorry that I didn't meet everybody's taste or need, this is probably never going to happen.
I hope you'll agree with finishing the current stash busting contest and voting before we do a different stash-busting something.

I'm on a stash-busting/UFO completion run too, but completing a quilt takes a lot longer than running up a top which is why I haven't entered anything in this month's competition, but so far I've used 3m of 44" fabric for the backing and the same area in wadding plus about 2m of assorted scraps.

What @BrendaP says.
It took me every evening of a week to cut out the bits from 11 fat quarters and two metres of extra-wide.  0_0 The best bit for stash-busting is the backing. You just lift it out of the cupboard (or order it of course...despite the fabric buying moratorium which is in place...)  :[

Tbh, I think I'm a lost cause with the stash busting malarkey....

I started out with good intentions, then popped into the fabric shop yesterday, just for a natter with the girls you understand.....  Walked out with about 10 yards - 6 from the remnant bin!  :S

I. Must. Not. Buy. Any. More. Fabric.

Hoping the Poppins outfits will use some up.
