Title: Stashbust in 2019
Post by: Francesca on February 11, 2019, 14:35:04 PM
Based on the success of the stashbusting competition for January, some suggested they'd like to carry on. So I introduce our non-official 2019 stashbust!

There are no rules or regulations. This is about you deciding how you want to stashbust, defining your own goals and cheering others on along the way.

This thread will run all year, and conclude at the end of 2019. Whether you choose to diligently stashbust along and record your numbers or just join in the thread is up to you.

I'd recommend if you want to take this seriously, defining your goal statement in a post here, and keeping track of your numbers either in a spreadsheet or in your signature. If you want to copy my signature, here is the code, just copy & paste it into the "signature" field on "Profile > Forum profile"

Code: [Select]
<b>Stash Busting 2019</b>
Goal: 100 metres
So far: 0m metres

If you're keen to get a handle on your stash this year I also have a dummy version of my stash spreadsheet. Just copy all the cells into your own sheet on Google Docs or Excel: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11ndFVln4BHzRqwnN61rP4EQZh31EHT0rYIN_MHOELWM/

Good idea Fran, it helps to see it written down.

I’m not measuring all mine but my aim is not to buy any fabric for at least 6 months. I did buy some fabric and lining for a tailored jacket for my sewing class but no more after that.

Just realised I used 4m of curtain lining yesterday so will have to amend my signature.  0_0

I am very impressed that you all seem to know how much, by length, you have in your stashes.

Well I've altered my profile so that's a start!

I'm aiming on the low side although, I think I have more, but I'm hoping it can be achieved. After last year's almost none event even half would be acceptable....... I won't say that I won't buy any new fabric but I do want to try to use what I have. It's still a fair few garments as I'm only 5'1" and size 6-8 so a top doesn't take much fabric, good for buying but not so good when you're trying to use it up!

I’m still stashbusting but don’t want to make lists and spreadsheets..is it OK to still post in this thread?

Not going to get out my stash and measure it, takes up to much valuable sewing time. No spread sheets for the same reason. 100m is a good estimate  ;)
I've got stuff on the go, I must take piccies.

I'm in.  Last year I tried to do the 50 yards but only got to 26 I think (it could have been 28).  That's probably all I can try for this year too.  I'm not that prolific.

I would like to at least sew up enough to get all fabric on the shelf and not have the current overflow into other nooks of my sewing room.

The last time I bought fabric was in May Sept when I was in Portland.  I am not very tempted lately.

I have decided to combine what I was doing for the year-long UFO challenge, with stashbusting and sorting out things that have been needing repair and alteration for years.

I've got 9 crates of the stuff; stash, unfinished garments, things that need altering - including a bass guitar case!

I need the space urgently.

So, my signature hopefully reflects this!

Only 9 crates @Goth Gardiner ?
Yes I want to stashbust this year too but I fear I'd be shocked if I put my stash in a spreadsheet!
Title: Re: Stashbust in 2019
Post by: Holly Berry on February 17, 2019, 15:10:41 PM
Well that came as a shock. I catalogue all my fabrics as I buy them, so I know how much each piece is, but I’ve never added it all up.

Here goes woven          121 mtrs
                Knit/jersey.    55 mtrs
                Fleece.            7 mtrs
                Lining.           20 mtrs

                Total.             203 mtrs

                UFO’s.              7 (mainly summer clothes)

I’ve decided that I will never get the stash down to zero, it’s just not realistic.

I’ve started by matching some fabric with patterns that I’ve already made the fit adjustments.

My problem is I like to sew for an event and to a deadline......so I need to get out more 0_0

I must remember this is a hobby and as such has to be enjoyable.

@Holly Berry wow that's some stash.
I will continue to use my stash but no idea how much I have and cannot be bothered to measure it all or fill in spreadsheets. I can't guarantee that I will remember to add us the usage either but will continue to let you know what I have made.

My stash is so disorganised that it would be impossible to quantify - let's just say, there's a lot....  :S

Is it necessary to give an estimate, or is it enough to say by how much you would like to get rid of sew?

Can we also include toiles in this?

I thought I had quite a big stash, but it pales into insignificance compared to most of you!  Absolutely no idea how many yards, and absolutely no intention of measuring it all  0_0
I usually buy fabric when I need some, but then other bits fall into my basket by accident because I like them so much, which means I want to make them into something straight away, so my stash doesn't grow too much.  My wardrobe, however...
Title: Re: Stashbust in 2019
Post by: Greybird on February 19, 2019, 09:41:56 AM
Me too @Bodgeitandscarper . This has made me take a closer look at what I have. I now have 4 pieces of uncut fabric - the rest is leftover bits that might go towards making something someday.
Title: Re: Stashbust in 2019
Post by: Holly Berry on February 19, 2019, 09:48:37 AM
By writing it down, it’s almost overwhelmed me! However I’m determined to to make inroads into it.
I haven’t told my OH that we need an extension for a walk in wardrobe, because when I make it all up I’ll need it.

Rather than clog this thread up I will just post a picture of the fabric with metreage and pattern and plot my progress on my diary and then post a picture here of the finished garment.

@Holly Berry I'm feeling smug now. Mine's not been measured but it can't be that much..can it?
Title: Re: Stashbust in 2019
Post by: Holly Berry on February 19, 2019, 13:27:23 PM
@Lachica if I’d had to estimate it I would have said 100 mtrs.

I’m not even going to estimate the amount of money it’s cost me. Perhaps I ought to work it out and put fabric as a special item on my house insurance. It would cost a fortune to replace.

I’m afraid I’m just going to admit that I’m a fabricaholic. But as Oscar Wilde said “ I can resist anything but temptation “ Fabric is my weakness

@Francesca , are you counting as stash everything that comes into your sewing room. Even if you buy it on Friday and sew it up by Monday? By that measure I have more than I thought. I count it as stash if it stays unused for more than a few weeks, or I don't buy with a definite project in mind!

Anyway I think I will join in. I have some black fabric to make a skirt out of as soon as I make DH's pyjamas. The T shirt fabric has arrived today and will be washed tonight.

Another 2 meters gone...

A very slinky ITY  (Fabworks) dress, the 90s dress from  Ellie and Mac. I have to say the back skirt piece isn’t drafted right for the lower shaped back bodice. Emailed them but just got a fudged answer saying when the pattern is updated that will change... no good to me!

Well I'm going to join in this one! After promising myself that I wasn't going to buy any more fabric for a long time, I had a bit of a splurge  :|
And even worse, when I got the fabric home, I can't fit it in my cupboard  :o I use those sets of wire-basket drawers from IKEA to store my fabric and it has reached critical... there's absolutely no way to get the fabric in without going full Marie Kondo. So, I need to seriously use some of that fabric up!!
No idea of how many metres I have... I don't WANT to know!!  :S

A genuine stash bust piece. A short sleeve t shirt made from the remnants of my DH pyjama top fabric. It was extra wide so I have got his T and mine out of 2m.

Well, I finished the first one!!  I used 2 remnants which have been in the stash for so long I can't remember.  The fabric is a sort of scuba, but it creases.  Nice textures though.  I had to mix the two, as one wouldn't have been enough.

I used New Look 6230, and cut a size 16.  It's a tad snug, but I'm not expecting to wear much under it, so it's fine.

No issues really, just that the neck seems a bit square.  I thought it was me, but then I sewed the next one, and that was the same.

I am going to Imanuels tomorrow. I will be buying fabric, meters of the stuff!

Hopefully I will only buy the curtain fabric I am going for :S

Also hopefully I will get the damned curtains made ASAP, which will conveniently get rid of metres of already owned lining.

Lovely morning at Immanuels.

The church always delivers. Fabric for new curtains, a Roman blind, a tablecloth and something to recover two chairs from the £1 room.

DD got about 6m of dress fabric but I won’t add them to my stash total even though I’ll be making them up.

Cut another white top out!  BurdaStyle Model 126 02/2013 BurdaStyle126 02/2013 (https://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/striped-t-shirt-022013)

I've cut it from two diagonal remnants which have been in the stash forever, so I've had to be a bit creative.

Not sure how to assess how much fabric I'm using, any suggestions?  I sometimes buy fabric as remnants, for unknown future projects, and they are often weirdly shaped.

I don't think i've posted here, but I definitely need to sew up the stash.  No clue how much I've got, but I just need to either sew it up, or move it on to its next home.  I hope to sew up 2 yards for every yard I bring in.  I've got 2 pairs of pants in the works that should eat up 3+ yards in the next day or so.

I reckon about 4 metres were used up in total - includes the toile I made.

This is a genuine stash bust, a Maria Denmark Yasmin Yoke skirt. I have made about 4 or 5 of these to date. This is a remnant left over from a black jacket.  The fabric is maybe a cotton mix with a horizontal rib. You can't see the detail in the photo. I lined it with some black knit lining from stash as well. There wasn't enough to make a complete waistband facing so the back is a cotton print.

Another nightshirt finished. The pattern is Burda 8271, courtesy of GreyBird.  This is the third I've made from this pattern, and I really like it.

Unfortunately, this one was made from stash, and I had to compromise on the length, which as I've now found, is too short.  It's a lovely cotton lawn, with a silver thread running through it, but I now need to make some shorts/pyjamas to go with it...

Fabric was so tight, I had to join two pieces to get the sleeves out...

I reckon I used less than 2mtrs.  I should have measured before cutting out.

I don't think it's wonky either. I much prefer blinds done in soft folds rather than the sharply pleated commercial kind. A lot depends on the number of cords and the depth of the folds. Looks lovely.

That's lovely @Efemera. Doing it without the bottom band makes a much neater job. You'll wear it to death as it looks like a good "pull on ya" for every occasion.
I have a pattern for a sweat shirt (gulp said the darksider) and I might modify it to do away with the band. One less thing to worry about.  :)

@annieeg itsthis (https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/69511)

I made it up a couple of years ago and didn't like how they did the front bands, this time I forgot and did exactly the same thing (numpty).

I have put a large note on the pattern envolope.

I also added buttons as it opened far too low for me.

I thinkk @Bodgeitandscarper showed it first.  I usually choose patterns other people have used first.

I've just noticed its OOP. :S if you want to trace it you can borrow mine.

I must retrieve it and try and finish it.  I really like it in that print you used.

Another project made from the stash.  Only the Ringmaster coat, bow tie, and cummerbund were made from stash, but I used about 3 mtrs in total.  The red satin has been in the stash since Adam was a lad!  Football fabric I bought about 3 years ago, and it's been waiting for a suitable project.

I've just been back and added up how much stash I've used, and I'm up to a wonderful 12 mtrs (approx.) stash fabric used!  Very pleased, but the worrying thing is, it hasn't even made a dent in the stash... :S :(

My total includes this last project, a new ironing board cover.  I ran it up quickly last night, when I realised how grotty the existing one looked.

Now to knock off a few UFO's!  :)

Finally got something to report and that my stash has been reduced! I've finished a beach/poolside cover up by Hot Patterns. It's a free download as well http://contentm.mkt2178.com/lp/814/2043/HP_fabric.com_PEACHY_BEACHY_POOLSIDE_COVER_UP_MAY_2010.pdf?cm_re=SL1-_-crhdqtr-_-Beach%20Coverup

It's only used a measly 2 metres but it's a start! It's also a UFO as it was cut out well over a year ago. The fabric was originally a sarong think, of a scarf like fabric so horrible to work with. I'm just glad it's finished!  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Sorry for the large picture, I can't work out how to resize from my phone.

No pics yet, but I made 4 fitted Moses basket sheets last night for a couple of DD's friends with newborns.  DGD is also expecting, so, I've dug out some stuff I used to decorate her swinging crib some 26 years ago, and I intend to use the last of it decorating a Moses basket for the new little girl - yes, another girl.  Poor Theo will grow up surrounded by hormonal females!

I've managed to piece the backs on a couple of the sheets, so I'm getting rid of some of the annoying smaller bits of fabric.

So, another 2 mtrs approx.

Finished off the Moses Sheets last night, approx. 3mtrs.  For two of them, I've used a lovely soft fleecy fabric to go next to baby's skin, DD loved those. Plans are underway to re-furb Theo's old Moses basket.  This was one which was left at our house, so it's only been used a handful of times - it will use up lots of stash.  ;)

Cut out a Teddy Bear as well.  I would love to make a successful teddy, as it would use up lots of scraps.  The pattern was a free one from Sew magazine and is their pattern for a Memory Bear.  It's going to be my Scrappy Bear if it works!

That should keep me out of mischief over the weekend!

I used two yards today making a set of napkins.  First thing I've sewn this year outside of a test knit sleeveless top (that was a disaster).  Since I may reuse that fabric to test something else I can't count it as stash busting.

After a rather long sewing break I am starting to feel the urge to sew again.

I've got a bit of a foot in two camps today.  I did lots of sewing at the weekend, the Toile Bear was totally from stash, but didn't take a lot of fabric, perhaps half a metre, but I do have a lot of small pieces, and it was useful for getting rid of them.  The bear itself is just the first of a few I plan to make and will not be given away as it was simple a try out to identify difficult areas.  I've not had many successful toys, so hopefully I can get a decent bear at the end of the process.

The second project is a little difficult to categorise - stashbust or UFO?.  The strip blocks were made years ago, but they were made from stash, no extra fabric.  At last I got some kind of finished top from them, I just need to add some wadding, a back, and do some simple quilting and binding.  I will call it done then.

I practised the sashing on some even older odd blocks, and have one block left over from the strip blocks to add to the back.

Happy with this little lot, (apart from the bear) just need to finish them off now!

Mudcat, I adore that fabric...and napkins are a great way to show the full range of critters.

I have a ton of shirting left overs that I have always planned to make into a mashup fabric from which to make another shirt for BH.  I also thought I might be able to cut each pattern piece out of a separate remnant.  This may be the year I do it.

They are fabrics I picked up in Alaska last year.  The critters are sharks, moose and bears and they all have the word Alaska spelled in the design.

A worthy stashbust!  I have had the fabric for 25 to 30 years.  Probably bought at Truro Fabrics when they were in a series of little shops in the back streets of Truro.  I think it's Laura Ashley lawn.

It's for my goddaughter who will be 2 in August.  There are more details (and pictures) on my Diary thread.

Hhmmphhh… first stash fail - I think.  Saying that, even if it's a fail, it's going to result in less fabric stash, so maybe not a fail in that sense (well, I think I know what I mean).

OK, let me explain.  I'd managed to get hold of NewLook 6213, and made a copy on Saturday afternoon.  Monday morning I lifted out the fabric I wanted to use.  After dinner last night, I went up to cut it out.

AAARRGGHH!  Fabric is too narrow for the pattern pieces.  I then spent 45minutes searching for other suitable fabric, and found some lovelies.  Then the doubt set in.  What if it doesn't fit?  What if I hate it?  So, better use some fabric I'm not so bothered about, right?

Found a nice-ish, thin-ish satin geometric which was a large remnant, and a very queer shape.  So, I used that.  Halfway through, I realised that this was a piece I had earmarked as a jacket lining... :S  Not only that, I don't think it's going to be suitable as a garment.

I think it's going to be a 'proper' toile, and consigned to the bin when I've finished with it.  :S

Still, it will be a few more metres gone from the stash!   ;)

And valuable information about your pattern, which might lead to more stash-busting!
Title: Re: Stashbust in 2019

@b15erk , the nice thing about a big stash is, that usually there are other fabrics suitable for the same task ready at hand! You might find another fabric lining in your stash for the jacket... As long as the fabric has served a good cause (either wearable or useful toile) there is no more to wish for, I think... So don't feel bad.

@mudcat gave me a stash busting idea with her napkins. My daughter was complaining about us using paper napkins anyway, so I decided to use the nice woven cotton fabrics I got in stash for napkins. I got lots of pieces, of varying size - smaller ones I bought because they were nice designs, larger pieces that were ment to be twirly girls dresses. I sewed A LOT of those for all my daughters friends as birthday presents, so I always had different colours and designs on hand. But now they've all grown out of those sort of dresses (its all jumpsuits, tshirts and blouses nowadays) and I can use up the fabrics for something else.
I used this tutorial about self binding napkins (https://www.patchworkposse.com/self-binding-napkin-tutorial/). My squares are 45cm and 35 cm (I made a cardboard template) and the size is good to use. I sewed up 26 napkins for now, there are a few more cut out. I tried to mostly use all different fabric combinations for the napkins to be distinguishable in the end. The leftovers of the fabrics I put aside for my mother - she likes to use them for baby quilts. I used up around 11m of fabric for those napkins! Some of them we will keep, most will be given away. Yay for stash busting AND using the nice fabric with a way to look at it often!

What fun napkins, morzel.   I like the idea of doing them bound like that.  A good way to use smaller scraps too.

Mine are all sewn right sides together with an opening to turn out and then top stitched.  But, I think I'll try this next time.  They might come out of the dryer less wrinkled.

I finally finished my Stylearc Martha overshirt. The trouble now is I’m not sure if it will ever be warm enough to wear it.

The pattern of the fabric is a little outside my comfort zone, I think stripes are a bit racy.

This plus a few new things for DD means a nice little stash reduction.

The next project is a dress for my 7 month old GD, don’t think it’s going to make much of a dent.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

@Morzel, I love those napkins. I've saved the link as I think it's a great way to use up lovely fabrics.

I am sewing napkins right now using what a friend from Romania taught me. She is a fabulous sewer and everything she makes is really neatly done. When done, I will have used up 3.5 meters of fabric I bought in 2017. I have the fabric to make placemats and soup bowl covers to go with the napkins. All in Christmas print.

I wanted a good basic that I can play about with. It’s quick and easy and I look forward to making some more.  I’ve just realised I’ve swapped the button hole and button placements but I’m sure little Casey won’t mind.

It’s lined so being generous to myself I’m claiming 0.5m 0_0  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Their nappy cover pants pattern (this one (https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/103543262/fully-lined-diaper-cover-pattern-pdf)) is excellent too.

[Edited to add that I think your way round with the buttons makes more sense anyway - that's how I would do it.]

NL 6213 made from thin satin stuff - probably bought for lining.

Hate it.  Don't even know why I finished it.  It's too tight across the bust, and why I chose to make something with gathers above the bust, I have no idea.

Fabric frayed like the devil, the tie slips out of the loop, and I hated making it.

Still, it used about 2 mtrs of stash, and I may wear it in the garden.

@Ellabella , that dress is soo cute! You are right, the pattern seems a good basic. And the fabric pattern is great for a kid!

@Efemera, that kimono has wonderful fabric, looks japanese - love it. And the blouse - what a fun piece! Good use of thos 80cms...

I decided to define stash as fabric that's been in the cupboard more than a year. Otherwise its just 'delayed project'...

So I sewed up a tunic for my daughter from viscose, 1,5m, a twirly dress for my niece (ca. 8m of hemline), 2,5m from stash fabric. Used fabric leftovers (ca. 1m) to sew a bunch of little drawstring bags - to use for presents or anything. 15m stash used up so far since end of May.

I love looking what everyone as been sewing using up their stash. I am trying to use up mine and am trying to focus on it for the next 6 months. What I am making does require I buy some fabric as I am broadening my horizon on the cloth grocery bags I make. DD is suggesting making them for the barrel racers to put their horse supplies into.

@Morzel, you have been busy in June. 15 meters is a lot of fabric. I thought I was doing well sewing 5.9 meters in June.
June's sewing was 12 napkins with mitre corners on them. I also made a reusable grocery bag which I cross hatched batting to as I had no craft interfacing. I bought more yesterday to make two more bags in July. Had to buy one piece of fabric to go with the pieces I chose from the stash. Today I will launder the fabric I want to sew for July. 7-8 meters in total for this go round.

After getting the housework done, I decided to do a project that I have wanted to do for about a year now. It didn't happen last year for some unknown reason. I hauled out everything and made a winter picture. The fabric is 9 years old and left over from a project that needs to be quilted. With the left over scrap, I made a topper for DH's parents gramophone.

That used up .5 meter of fabric and a couple of hours of time. And it made me feel happy. Now I want to quilt the UFO.

I'm going to have to take it across the road to a quilting friend to see how I should quilt it. 10 years is way to long for a UFO to languish.

I do love cardinals and they are amongst the trees near our home.

The link (https://www.patchworkposse.com/self-binding-napkin-tutorial/) that @Morzel  gave for napkins set my brain on fire. I have fabric to sew into Christmas placemats and needed to figure out how to do them like the napkins. I did my research this morning, dug out some fabric I can continue to make more placemats out of and got what I wanted in the size I wanted (18 x 14"). I know need to get the back fabric for the Christmas placemats and I can sew them up.

My prototype. And I have lots of the red so will be sewing it up for a long time.

Uhh, @Ann, that cardinal fabric is wonderful and I love the quilt topper you made. I always come back to the fact that I like the simple designs best with quilts. The reduced colour and clear pattern looks great. How big is it? What will you use it for?
Title: Re: Stashbust in 2019
Post by: Ann on June 29, 2019, 21:29:41 PM
@Morzel, I can use the table topper as either a wall hanging or a table covering between meals. It is 35 x35". I have space upstairs for it or I can hang it in the family room.

I really liked the pattern but there was a lot of fussy cutting to get it look the way it does. It took me ages to cut out and sew -- most of one winter as I was living in an apartment with only the basics for sewing. Everything was down in the house we had bought the spring and was 900 kms away.

Butterick 6026

This is the one with the lovely pintucks at the shoulder and waist.

Made with cotton which has been in the stash since Adam was a lad. Not sure if there is any poly in it, but as it was intended as a toile I wasn't too bothered.

Not finished yet, as I have a few issues.

Used about another metre and a half.  Yayyyyy!

My toile is finished!  And it is wearable, and it used some stash!

The pattern ran very big, and I'm going to trace off the smaller size before I make the next one, and I'll also be raising the armhole. I know I've made the alterations on the original pattern tracing, but it just feels too big all over, so I'll start with a new tracing.

It's a very easy pattern, and I finished it with snaps rather than buttons.  No particular reason, I'd been using snaps for something else, and decided they would look good on this blouse.

One glaring mistake though :|, I forgot to toptitch the button band  :|.  No idea how it happened, but I'll try to do it with the snaps on.  :S

I love your top @b15erk. I'm waiting for Butterick patterns to go on sale so I can buy it.

I bought 4 meters of fabric the other day. One piece was on sale where I got 3 meters of it for the price of 1 meter plus .5 meter for under $2.00. The other .5 meter was on sale for 50% off. That is my purchase for this month it seems unless I sew up lots this month. The large amount of fabric will be for bags and the .5 stripe is for a doll's apron.

I had a good afternoon in the sewing room and got 1 more meter sewn up. Two wall hangings for the downstairs bathroom used up .6 meter. I stretched it over painter's canvases.  It was a struggle as I really need .7 meter to do it easily.

I then sewed up placemat #4. I have 2 more to go and will do them when I have short spurts in the sewing room.

I have to say that I will be happy when the lobster fabric is gone. There is still quite a bit of the red left but the white is used up.

@b15erk, I was to the fabric shop yesterday. Went in with my fabric for more bags. I got pieces to make 3 bags using stash fabric and then bought fabric for 2 more. I was very careful this time to only buy what I needed for each bag with only tiny scraps left over.

The next bag is sold and I bought 1 fat quarter and .6 meter for it. The remaining fabric is from the stash (1 meter). The other 2 are the same and then I bought the fabric to make 2 more bags. After that, it's back to the stash. I need to make simple bags that I can sell/give away to use up other pieces of fabric in the stash. Overall I'm enjoying shopping in the stash.

Bag #1 has been shipped and while I was doing that, I shipped a parcel to DD. I had fabric I'd gotten for her. So I snuck in 5 more meters for her to use to make western shirts she sells. She wanted them and I was happy to part with them from the stash.

Bag #2 is ready for the closure and lining and then I will be making a bag for a couple of little girls who love lady bugs. Their mom has been fighting cancer for several years now, they lost their barrel horse, and life has been pretty sad for these two. I'll donate it to them and DD can put it in their parcel when she finishes making their shirts. It makes me happy to give these two girls some happiness in their lives. Fabric -- lady bugs as they love to catch them and make wishes before they release them.

Done and already worn, the Orange Butterick6026.  I do like it, although I can be seen from a long way off.

I will be making another, but not until I've finished a couple of other projects that I have in mind.

Used about a metre and a half from stash - but still not seeing a dent...  :S

Next up a pair of cut off trousers - pattern traced and cut out, but I can't find the safe place I put it in.

So, I'll move swiftly on, to yet another shirt dress.  Bale blue border lace linen (may be a mix), yet again from stash.

Love the idea of your Ladybug bags Ann - we call them Lady birds.  Do you have a picture?

@b15erk,  I love your shirt. I'm waiting for Butterick patterns to go on sale before I buy the pattern.

I finished bag #2 and will be able to ship it in the next couple of days. It has piping on it instead of rick-rack. I even put piping on the handles for a fun touch.

That is another 1.5 meters gone from the stash. I will start the next one in a couple of days.

I made 2 doll's skirts yesterday so that was .25 meter used up along with 60" of lace. Today I hope to start another bag of which I am hoping to get all the fabric out of the stash. If not, I have another bag I want to make of which I have most of the fabric here plus a piece I bought. All I can say is, it's bag day.

The next bag is done and it exceeded my expectations. I used 1.5 meters of fabric and interfacing from the stash. I had to buy .85 meters to complete the bag. Today I went shopping and found buttons to cover for the bag. Yes this crazy lady made it using fabric left over from the bag.

There are two lady bug buttons climbing up the left side of the handle on the front.

And the back strap has a lady bug button in the middle of it to help hide the stitching.

On to the next one about Wednesday. Have other sewing to do for a couple of days.

My stashbust plans for 2019 were so ambitious- it was to only buy/otherwise acquire fabric on a 3:1 ratio with sewn/given away, that is 3 metres out to 1 metre in. I was doing well with this for the first quarter of the year, mainly due to having made some curtains for which fabric was ready and waiting, 17 metres used up.

Now though, mainly due to some recent purchases, the ratio has gone way out of the window- 56 metres out to 42 metres in!

@Fabric Lover, my ratio is 2m sewn to 1m in. I'm trying to use up all the fabric I bought and pair it with fabric in the stash.

I'm testing a doll pattern and making a doll's skirt. Fabric, elastic, ribbon and thread all from the stash. I couldn't have been happier to see it all come together in the sewing room. I will fool around with the scraps and see if I can make a top to go with the skirt and if I can as I have white fabric to line it with. All is good.

@Ellabella, here's hoping you will be strong. You can be strong.

The .75 meter of fabric I used to test a pattern is completely gone. The scraps fit into a ball in one hand.

I bought nothing for the dress as it was all in the stash. Right down to the thread that matched perfectly.

For the skirt and top, I bought the eyelet lace as I had none and it's hard to find in the stores here.

I'm happy that fabric is gone. I've made a total of 5 pieces for doll out of it in the past year and a bit.

Next up is another bag. Fabric is folded on the table ready to go.

@Ellabella , oooh, baby shopping, that's the very worst kind of temptation.  Enjoy!

@Ann , another lovely outfit, summery yellow, mmmmmmmm

Just finished the Ottobre 05/2015 trousers, and used another 2 mtrs!  :)  Very pleased with myself as this particular fabric has been in the stash so long I don't remember where it came from! The green looks a bit washed out on the pics, but it's a proper apple green.

I'm .25 meters short of 40 meters so I'm hoping I will have a chance to get something made for the dolls tomorrow and Tuesday.

I finished another bag today and am pleased with it. The best part was the button.

I made all the piping for this bag and I enjoyed the process.

The back has a design feature to account for the horse fabric being too narrow. I sewed a narrow strip of fabric over the seam to hide it.

And the button. DD went nuts over it.

I have to say this has been fun and it's great to see a few piles shrinking in the stash.

@Ann , your bag is beautiful, and I love the button.  So creative.

I've just used another couple of metres making a Verao Top.  This is a free pattern, and I used a very oddly shaped remnant which cast me 50p several years ago.  Fine cotton jersey lining was also from the stash.

I'm really pleased with this and it made up very quickly, although I think maybe I'll add sleeves to make it suitable for work.

I'm going to go back through this thread, and count up how much I've actually used, I didn't think to keep count.  :S

On the downside, I caved in at the weekend, and bought some fleece fabric. Beautifully soft, one with red tractors on, the other more a Minky softness.  Yum, and only £3 a metre - how could I refuse it?  ;)

I was very naughty in Bradford  0_0 0_0.

Two lots of fabric for GD plus some odds and sods of trimming as I have to make her look like the Staypuft man from Ghostbusters in a couple of weeks.

The trouble was I also bought some beautiful heavyweight denim for a skirt and a lovely fine grey denim which was intended for a shirt for DH but may get diverted my way. Also a remnant of georgette that will make a lovely blouse.

On the plus side this weekend I used a grand total of half a meter plus a scrap of sheeting to create this as a toile for GD.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

@b15erk, love your top. I use Stash Shrinker (https://sewjourners.net/2018/01/02/stash-shrinker/) to keep track of what I use in the stash and what goes into the stash. It's a great use of Excel.

The last bag sold. I was suppose to sew for the dolls today but was not inspired. So, I finished up the last 2 placemats and fooled around with some scraps of fabric.

I've sewn 40.55 meters of fabric to date. 5 meters given to DD and 10-11 meters of stashed fabric sewn up in July. Hopefully August will be another productive month.

@KayK On the other hand, if you find an exciting fabric, you can go ahead and buy it, without guilt. Also you will have more space to sew in.  Sometimes I wish I didn't have a stash. As it is I'm aiming for less. 2 out for 1 in sounds do-able. Ignoring the quilt box, which is an experiment and should be self limiting, this is the new strong me.
So far, used 3m for waistslips, 2m for trousers, 2m for a shirt, 6m for pyjamas. 13m. Bought, 10 m of lawn to underline some fine see through dresses, 1.5m linen for a shirt. You see my problem?

I felt the need for a distraction for a few minutes, as I've spent the day worrying about my DD and her little family desperately trying to meet extremely unreasonable (imo), deadlines to move out, or break the chain.

So, I downloaded the app that @Ann kindly linked to, and spent a few minutes putting my information in.

I have so far used the grand total of 31.5 yards of fabric!

I am delighted, but do need to speed up a bit - there are many, many metres to go.... :S

After my fabric buying moratorium at the beginning of the year I have completely fallen off the wagon!
I bought fabric for a big full skirted dress and it was so beautiful that I'm afraid to ruin it so I bought more for a toile. It's lovely too and surprisingly good quality considering what I paid for it so it's hanging about close to the 'too nice to ruin' pile too!
Somebody help me.  :[

I’ve realised where I am going wrong with this stash busting lark.

I’ve made some odd things for my DD and SIL over the years, think octopus legs for a fancy dress costume and a pair of sleeves for Freddy Kruger but I really enjoyed the latest request.

My beautiful 9 month old GD is going to her first Comicon as the Staypuft man from Ghostbusters.

My problem is that her dress took all of 0.5m but I bought about 1.7m to make it. I can never resist when @Francesca has one of her fabric clearouts.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

@Ann , you bag is lovely, and I particularly like the fastening strap.  I tried to do something like that on the cuff of some trousers, but couldn't figure out how.

Not done any sewing for a while as I have lodgers (DD and family are waiting for probate to go through on their new house).

I had to make a Bendy Bag by Lazy Girl Designs and this one turned out cuter than I thought it would.

I put the lady bug buttons on it because I had them and they give a hint as to what the lining is.

@annieeg, enjoy the excel spreadsheet. I love it and this is the second year I have used it.

I do have a game plan when using it. If I buy fabrics and use them up, I don't record them as purchased and do not count them in stash used. If I stash it for longer than 30 days I record it as purchased and then when I use it.

I set my goal (which I am not meeting), put Multiplier at 100, and the units as meters. What i am most interested in is how much I have bought and stashed and how much I have used out of the stash. I do include craft weight interfacing, fusible fleece and some other interfacing I've had in the stash for a long time. It has helped me focus on using them up and I know I will have to buy more as time goes on. I'm okay with that as my goal was to use up what I have on hand.

When this spreadsheet was posted, a lot of ladies decided to measure their stash and record it. I chose not to. It is  on the shelves for me to see and the goal, for me, was to sew it up and buy as little as possible. I wasn't going to use precious time to measure the fabric I had. I measure it when I use it up. And for me, that works.

Another goal I set this year was to sew up the scraps of fabric left over from projects rather than put them back into the stash. I'm at about 65% of meeting that goal. My biggest reasons are getting tired of sewing the fabric or I need to buy more fabric to finish the project.

In December I will look at my totals and see what I will change for 2020. I may not record what I've put into the stash and record every meter I sew whether it is from the stash or new bought. I may use the purchased column for new bought fabric so I can track all the incoming fabric. These are ideas floating around in my head. What works for me, may not work for other people. And that is great.

The two small bags will be out of a dog print that I need to buy. In the mean time, I am going to make 2 doll skirts and use up .3 meter of fabric. I'm closing into almost 45 meters sewn this year. August has been a slower month as we have been doing other things outside.

DGD wearing the Lolita top from Puperita, slightly crumpled but she’s had it on all day.

It’s a lovely quick make and with its elastic neckline it’s really easy to get on and off.

I can’t claim a big stash reduction though as it was made from the scraps left from a top I made her Mum.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

We won't get into my stash.  Yes, it's large and no, I haven't sewn much this year.

I also don't generally go on fabric fasts; I do well enough when I feel I have too much and stop buying.  I've been in that hold pattern for a couple of years.

I have purchased about 66 yards of fabric last month, and about 50 more all year long.  I have a planned 10-20 yard purchase next month or so, and that will be the end of what I buy.  50 yards of this, however, was for a wedding dress.  While I don't expect to use all the fabric (11 yds of crepe de chine, 25 of satin and 15 of china silk), my cost sheet accounted for all of it, so what is left is going to be a "freebie" as it were; it will neither get added to the stash nor taken from it when I use it.  The rest is either stuff I used fairly quick or am currently working on.

My goal for the year was about 200 yards out, which is about 2 garments a week on average in yardage, but as you can see, about 25% of my yearly goal is one dress.  The SWAKOP is about 20% of the total (about 37 yards), and another 15 yards for my daughter to get a few things (7%), and haven't sewn for myself enough to worry about.  So within 3 months, I'll have a little over half of yearly sewing out of the way, although the garment total is far below, leaving me a little under 100 yards to go within a 10 week period.

My in/out of fabric is odd.  I often do weird fabric hogs which accounts for a massive amount out quickly, and I may add or may not...nothing is set in stone.  I also don't do one garment until it is finished; a lot of the time I have several things going at once, so my fabric being used is X amount, but not counted until I finish it and it is in garment bags.

As to the yearly plan, after the above mentioned, there are things I have to finish/do which will account for fabric that is not listed.

@Kwaaked, we each have our own way of dealing with our stash and how much we have.  It all goes to how we are wired.

After I had a nap this afternoon (hot and humid here and I'm tired from it all) I went down to the sewing room and cut 4 meters of fabric (lobster). I got 8 napkins and 2 simple reusable grocery bags out of the fabric. There is some lobster fabric that is reverse to this and I will use it on the bags as decorations. In all, I'll probably use up 4.3 meters of those fabrics. I'm ready to sew when I have an hour here and there.  I also measure out a couple of pieces of fabric and I can make DDIL a Bendy Bag and a Bendy Bit bag. I have the zippers for them. I'm having a bit of a Snoopy dance on that one. I like it when plans come together.

When done that, I started to hem DGS's uniform trousers. I have 2 pairs to hem which will take me several afternoons as I don't rush at them. He needs them in 2 weeks. Plenty of time but I need to keep focused on doing them.

Well, my sewing resolutions came to naught this last week.  I've been so busy - at home and at work, that I've had no time to sew.

My houseguests are back from their holiday tomorrow, and still no news of the contract being signed on their new house.

Our house selling laws need urgent review.  Although they have spent thousands on searches and contracts, and had to leave their own house or break the chain, their vendor could still pull out.  :o  It's going to be havoc next week when the children are back at school, and mum and dad are back at work - the school run will be a nightmare as our house is a lot further away than the new one (or even the old one)!

I also have an eye operation scheduled for next Friday, and don't yet know how functional I will be ...

So, no imminent signs of more stashbusting from me.  :'(

@Starryfish - nice collection of tops. I think you are ready for fall with that collection.

I cut out and almost finished a reading pillow (https://villageboundquilts.com/blog/easy-reading-pillow). I used up 1 meter of fabric of Halloween fabric, .35 meter of two other fabrics left over from other projects, I also used a 22" zipper, .5 meter of batting and a meter of interfacing that was in the stash.

The fleece was suppose to be fusible and wasn't. We had several bolts shipped to the fabric store I worked in that were marked fusible and weren't. I ended up cross hatching the fleece to the fabric. The back of the pillow felt thin compared to the front so I interfaced the 2 pieces before inserting the zipper.

I have the pillow ready to sew together and when I get the pillow form I will post pictures. It was great to see more fabric from the stash sewn up. Especially the Halloween fabric.

It is Sept. 1 and I have to say I am happy with August's sewing output.

Sewn - 7.45 meters
Cut-      4.30 meters
Total-  11.75 meters
Year Total (including the cut fabric) 52.45 meters

I haven't kept track of what I bought but I do know there is fabric for 3 bags that will be made later this month. There is also 4 fat quarters for bags. Next year, I am going to keep track of what I buy (in fabric) and all I sew (out fabric) so I know what my totals actually are. That will give me a true picture of what I am actually sewing.

I'm working on a small project that has machine embroidery on it. I hope two more sewing sessions and it will be done. It is further along than this.

It hasn't been without its problems. I sewed a plastic flower pin head onto the pocket I put in and when I removed it, I cut a hole in the fabric. Had to redo that piece.

Though I've been busy sewing, the amount of stash sewn has been 1.2 meters this month. I have finished up a shirt that I had accounted for back in February and then did three doll items which use the 1.2 meters of fabric. I knew that when I set up the list of items I wanted to sew for the last half of September. I decided to finish up some UFO's.

October's list is in the making and it has some bags and a pillow planned. That will use up a lot of fabric from the stash. I am making lists to keep me accountable. I have been bouncing around with ideas and was all over the place. I found keeping myself accountable is helping me focus more on using up the stash and less on buying fabrics for new projects.

I finished a bag for DD. She will be using it for her lunch bag.

It really reminds me of a cozy flannel shirt. And I used 3.25 meters of fabric and interfacing from the stash.

I'm set up and ready to do a rolled edge on a scarf for DD that came from her stash. It's been in my stash for 9 months.

That looks lovely @Ann. My DH would love a shirt in that fabric.

@Ellabella, so would mine. It is cotton but looks like flannel.

I also made DD a 40" square scarf yesterday. I did a rolled hem on it. I had two things to work on

The first one took two tries as to where the variegated thread went and a bit of testing. The second one was an AHA moment when thinking. I used strips of tear away stabilizer and it worked perfect.  Here is a picture of the edging after I was done.

It pressed well and the edge is laying flat. Glad to have that off the to-do list.

With the last bag fresh in my mind, I made another one today. This one goes to a friend I taught with for many years. She loves dogs and requested one with dogs on it.

No bags tomorrow. Maybe something simple that I can work on in stages. If the weather is nice, we will be outdoors doing our front platform. Too cold today as the north wind blew right into that spot.

This is a Bendy Bag by Lazy Girl Designs. I call it a Bentley Bag after DD's cat who looks like one of the cats on the fabric. It is a fun make that will hold is bag of treats and a toy mouse for Christmas.

I'll probably have to go and get two fat quarters to make one for the dog. His will be from the fabric from the dog bag as his breed is shown on it.

Can we include knitting yarn in the Stashbust?  I've used up about 500g since having my eye operation and not being able to sew - all from stash.

Yes Jessie, if it’s yours it’s stash.

If you’ve used it it’s stash reduction 0_0

@b15erk, I would. That's a lot of yarn to knit up.

I'm going through and knitting up my yarn stash but am not counting it. It varies as I have to buy some yarn as I test patterns for designers (doll clothes) but I am slowly starting to see a slight decrease in the yarn stash. My stash isn't huge but it is big enough to keep me entertained for a couple more years as I knit most evenings.

October was a busy month and I got 24.4 meters of fabric sewn.

DD's dog's bag for Christmas.

DD's bag for her horse trailer.

I'm working on cushion covers, table topper and table runner for DD right now. She sent me the fabric and I'm trying to get it done by Thursday so I can ship it. Then it's onto Christmas gifts for family who live here. pajama pants for DGS, a small bag for DDIL, grocery bag for her parents are a few items i need to make. After Christmas, I'm spending time cleaning the sewing room thoroughly.

I've also been knitting. I did a couple of 4 hats and a scarf that I sent to DD. I've knit a 5th one and am making a scarf to go with it. After that is done, I'm going to finish up 2 UFOs so I have a clean slate for January.

I'm not going get 100 meters sewn this year but I'm at almost 80 meters. Most has come from the stash.  Of what I've bought this year, most has been sewn. I'm happy about that. DD sent me a bunch of fabric so I can make piping for her. I can do that when I have limited time as it is easy to make. I will send her lots at one time (10-15 meters) as she uses them on western shirts she makes.

Afraid I've been awol for a while with a few health problems.  I haven't managed much, but all of it has been from my stash.

The latest make has been marinading first in the stash, then the scap bag, before being made into strip blocks.  These were left unused for some time, and then I decided they would make a great quilt/playmat.

None of this quilt is planned.  The strip blocks were put together in the order which fitted the size of the block.  The borders were strips cut for another project and lay unused until this project came up.  Backing was a piece of fabric which has been languishing in the stash for rather a while (impulse buy), and the lable was just a leftover, not so pretty, block.

The binding, was a piece of fabric which I bought to dress the swinging crib we bought when my DGD was born.  It's nice to see it in a quilt for her little girl.

@b15erk, that is one fabulous quilt. I love how all the fabrics really work together. I am sure it will be well appreciated and loved.

Home decor fabric is slowly been sewn up. Two cushion covers and table topper are done. The table runner is ready to be hemmed (mitered corners) and there seems to be enough fabric left to make 2 placemats. All from 2 meters by 150 cm wide fabric and stripes too boot. When done, I'm taking a few days off from sewing as this project has used up a lot of time and I need to do a few other things around the house and we need to go for a drive to get apples.

I've sewn 81 meters this year and know I won't hit 100 meters. I will try for 90 meters though as I have only 4 weeks of sewing left before I start deep cleaning the sewing room.

My goal for 2020 is to sew 100 meters and not to buy very much fabric. I have been very happy sewing from the stash and giving away lots of what I make. DH has commented on how much I have sewn and was worried that I hadn't bought much fabric (enabler he is) but I told him all was well.

I finished the reading pillow that made me hit the 81 meter mark. It goes to the library on Tuesday for a Christmas draw.

Next up is a reusable grocery bag which I will gift to a friend. I'm thinking of embroidery on this one.

Used up another 1.7 meters of fabric and interfacing to make this bag.

It was left over from a bag I made in August. one piece about 2" wide by width of fabric left and it will be tossed into the garbage. I'm happy this one is done. And I do like it. It's a Christmas gift for DDIL's parents.

I sewed 8.95 meters of fabric this month. No fabric bought in November. I have to buy fabric to do tea towel toppers for DDIL's Christmas gift. I'm hoping to get 4 out of .5 meter of fabric. Will know once I finish drawing up the pattern.

December's list includes the towel toppers and pajama bottoms for DGS. If I have enough time, I will make piping for DD. I would love to send her a box that will arrive before the end of Dec. It remains to be seen as the sewing machine and serger go in for servicing Dec. 18 and I will be cleaning the sewing room after that. I also have to clean upstairs and decorate for Christmas. Plus bake buns and cookies.

I would love to say I sewed 90 meters of fabric this year but that remains to be seen. I did finish up part of the UFO sewing and will finish the rest in 2020 as planned. Of the fabric I bought this year, I have about 5 meters that I didn't sew. That will be sewn next year.

I've finished sewing this year. The machines are in for servicing and I pick them up Jan. 3 or 4. I start cleaning the sewing room today.

I sewed 4.1 meters of fabric in December. All Christmas presents.  A total of 87.3 meters was sewn during the year.

2020's goal is to sew 50 meters, more if possible and I'm starting the year off sewing Christmas fabrics. I have 20 meters of it and would love to have it into items for next Christmas.
